  • A quasi one-dimensional multi-phase reaction flow analysis code is developed for the performance analysis of liquid pintle thrusters. Unsteady flow field, droplet evaporation, finite reaction and film cooling models are composed as the major models of the performance analysis. The droplet vaporization takes account of Abramzon's vaporization model, and the combustion employs a flamelet model based on detail chemical reactions. Shine's model is applied for the film cooling calculation. To verify each model, the Sod shock tube, single droplet vaporization, kerosene droplets combustion, and film length are evaluated.

  • Numerical study of air-blast type injector for low emission aircraft engines was conducted. Volume-of-fluids approach was used to track interface of fuel and air. Primary atomization of fuel stream was visualized, and thickness and mean velocity at the injector exit was calculated. Liquid fuel injected from fuel slots joined together as a thin film on preflimer surface, and interacted with swirling air. As instability on the fuel surface increased, separation of fuel as ligaments and droplets occured. The film thickness and velocity were used to as fuel injection boundary condition for reactive flow simulation. Primary reaction zone was formed in vicinity of the fuel nozzle, creating a stable flame inside the combustor.

  • The fast pyrolysis characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass are investigated for a bubbling fluidized bed reactor by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To simulate multiphase reacting flows for gases and solids, an Eulerian-Eulerian approach is applied. Attention is paid for the primary and secondary reactions affected by gas-solid flow field. From the result, it is scrutinized that fast pyrolysis reaction is promoted by chaotic bubbling motion of the multiphase flow enhancing the mixing of solid particles. In particular, vortical flow motions around gas bubbles play an important role for solid mixing and consequent fast pyrolysis reaction. Discussion is made for the time-averaged pyrolysis reaction rates together with time-averaged flow quantities which show peculiar characteristics according to local transverse location in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor.

  • Modeling for complex reacting flow in Fischer-Tropsch reactor is one of the challenges in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). It is hard to derive each and every reaction rate for all chemical species because Fisher-Tropsch reaction produces many kinds of hydrocarbons which include lots of isomers. To overcome this problem, after analyzing the existing methodologies for reaction rate modeling, non-Anderson-Schulz-Flory methodology is selected to model the detailed reaction rates. In addition, the inside flow has feature of multi-phase flow, and the methodologies for modeling multi-phase flow depend on the interference between the phases, distribution of the dispersed phase, flow pattern, etc. However, existing studies have used a variety of inside flow modeling methodologies with no basis or rationale for the feasibility. Modeling inside flow based on the experimental observation of the flow would be the best way, however, with limited resources we infer the probable regime of inside flow based on conventional fluid dynamics theory; select the appropriate methodology of Mixture model; and perform systematic CFD modeling. The model presented in this study is validated through comparisons between experimental data and simulation results for 10 experimental conditions.

  • The performance of pintle thruster is analyzed by using the pintle thruster performance analysis model which integrating the element models introduced in Part I. To verify the performance analysis, the results of the developed program are compared with the experimental data of kerosene/hydrogen peroxide liquid pintle thrusters. Based on the results, the characteristics of the pintle thruster are analyzed. The sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effect of thruster shape and operation parameters on performance characteristics using both OAT and scatter plot methods. The four performance parameters such as droplet diameter, film flow rate, O/F ratio, and nozzle throat diameter are evaluated to investigate their effects on characteristic speed, combustor pressure, and specific thrust.

  • Diesel vehicles should be equipped with urea-selective catalytic reduction(SCR) system as a high-performance catalyst, in order to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions. In this study, a three-dimensional Eulerian-Lagrangian CFD analysis was used to numerically predict the multiphase flow characteristics of the urea-SCR system, coupled with the chemical reactions of the system's transport phenomena. Then, the numerical spray structure was modified by comparing the results with the measured values from spray visualization, such as the injection velocity, penentration length, spray radius, and sauter mean diameter. In addition, the analysis results were verified by comparison with the removal efficiency of the nitrogen oxide emissions during engine and chassis tests, resulting in accuracy of the relative error of less than 5%. Finally, a verified CFD analysis was used to calculate the interanl flow of the urea-SCR system, thereby analyzing the characteristics of pressure drop and velocity increase, and predicting the uniformity index and overdistribution positions of ammonia.
