  • Establishment of systematic platform is needed for technological progress of receiving of satellite image data with high quality and processing system for product generation and operation related with direct receiving system for satellite from abroad. Besides, it's necessary to develop the integrated data processing system to prohibit similar functions on developing (or being developed) for KOMPSAT-3, KOMPSAT-5 and to operate system efficiently. Therefore, conceptual design of the integrated data processing system is performed considering commercialization of KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) series based on KOMPSAT-2 IRPE on operation in this paper.

  • The Korea Muliti-Purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) uses a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude 685km as mission orbit and undergoes earth eclipses and infrequently lunar eclipses. Lunar eclipses occur when the moon is located between the sun and the satellite and blocks partially or fully the sunlight. The eclipse causes the satellite to increase battery discharge times and affects satellite lifetime and mission operation. The KOMPSAT lunar eclipses can cause additional effects to energy balance and battery disc of the KOMPSAT lunar eclipse for 3 year mission lifetime. Also mission planning scenario is presented for lunar eclipses at the KOMPSAT Grouns Station(KGS).

  • Korea is developing a Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite I (KOMPSAT-1) as one of Korea National Space Program, which will be launched in 1999. The EOC (Electro-Optical Camera) is the primary payload for KOMP-SAT-1. The main mission of EOC is to provide the images for the production of scale maps of Korean territory. This research is focused on methodology and possibility for the production of topographic maps using EOC sensor. Since the imagery from EOC is not yet available, SPOT Level 1A image data which are quite similar to those of EOC, and Intergraph Imagestation (Digital Photogrammetric Workstation) are implemented in the process of sample digital map generation. The sample digital maps generated from SPOT stereoimages were compared and analyzed with the existing 1:50,000 scale digital map produced by National Geography Institute. The feasibility and problem encountered in 1:50,000 scale digital mapping using SPOT stereoimages were presented. Based on results, the feasibility and further research areas for KOMPSAT-EOC in the line of 1:25,000 and 1;50,000 digital mapping were discussed.

  • KOMPSAT-3A launched in 2015 provides Middle InfraRed(MIR) images with 3.3~5.2㎛. Though the satellite provide high resolution images for estimating bright temperature of ground objects, it is different from existing satellites developed for natural science purposes. An atmospheric compensation process is essential in order to estimate the surface brightness temperature from a single channel MIR image of KOMPSAT-3A. However, even after the atmospheric compensation process, there is a brightness temperature error due to various factors. In this paper, we analyzed the cause of the brightness temperature estimation error by tracking signal flow from camera physical characteristics to image processing. Also, we study on possibility of improvement of MIR brightness temperature bias error of KOMPSAT-3A using GEOKOMPSAT-2A. After bias compensation of a real nighttime image with a large bias error, it was confirmed that the surface brightness temperature of KOMPSAT-3A and GEOKOMPSAT-2A have correlation. We expect that the GEOKOMPSAT-2A images will be helpful to improve MIR brightness temperature bias error of KOMPSAT-3A.

  • This paper describes the devlopment and implementation for the KOMPSAT-1 scheduling & automatic command plan generator(KSCG). Some problems in mission planning and command planning had occurred using the mission & command planning s/w in MAPS(Missin Analysis and Planning Subsystem) during the LEOP(Launch & Early Orbit Phase) & early normal mission phase due to lots of manual input process and non-automatic process. Therefore, the more mission operations for KOMPSAT-1. In order to prevent the development of new one(KSCG) which should reduce the manual process and generate automatically the command plan has been needed. As a result, the mission operations of KOMPSAT-1 has greatly became stable and more effient.

  • Earth observation satellites are being used in various field and are being developed in many countries due to their high utility and marketability. Korea is developing various Earth observation satellites according to National Space Development Plan. Among them, the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) series is the most representative low-orbit satellite. So far, a total of five KOMPSAT have been launched to meet the national image demand and have been used in various fields, including national institutions. This special issue introduces research related to data processing, analysis, and utilization using various image data from the KOMPSAT series. Meanwhile, for the uninterrupted utilization of the subsequent KOMPSAT image data, data processing and utilization research suitable for high-resolution images must be continued, and related research contents will be continuously shared through a special issue.

  • In this paper, solar cell array of KOMPSAT 1 was modeled and analyzed. The modeling results of solar array were achieved by neural algorithm, which is a powerful nonlinear system modeling tool. Using solar cell array modeling, the solar cell array was analyzed and verified by simulation considering solar cell data of KOMPSAT 1. The characteristics curves and power generation of the solar array are analyzed by using the modeling.
