Functional Brain Mapping Using $H_2^{15}O$ Positron Emission Tomography ( II ): Mapping of Human Working Memory ($H_2^{15}O$ 양전자단층촬영술을 이용한 뇌기능 지도 작성(II): 작업 기억의 지도 작성)

  • Purpose: To localize and compare the neural basis of verbal and visual human working memory, we performed functional activation study using $H_2^{15}O$ PET. Materials and Methods: Repeated $H_2^{15}O$ PET scans with one control and three different activation tasks were performed on six right-handed normal volunteers. Each activation task was composed of 13 match-ing trials. On each trial, four targets, a fixation dot and a probe were presented sequentially and subject's task was to press a response button to indicate whether or not the probe was one of the previous targets. Short meaningful Korean words, simple drawings and monochromic pictures of human faces were used as matching objects for verbal or visual memory. All the images were spatially normalized and the differences between control and activation states were statistically analyzed using SPM96. Results: Statistical analysis of verbal memory activation with short words showed activation in the left Broca's area, promoter cortex, cerebellum and right cingulate gyrus. In verbal memory with simple drawings, activation was shown in the larger regions including where activated with short words and left superior temporal cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus, prefrontal cortex, anterior portion of right superior temporal gyrus and right infero-lateral frontal cortex. On the other hand, the visual memory task activated predominantly right-sided structures, especially inferior frontal cortex, supplementary motor cortex and superior parietal cortex. Conclusion: The results are consistent with the hypothesis of the laterality and dissociation of the verbal and visual working memory from the invasive electrophysiological studies and emphasize the pivotal role of frontal cortex and cingulate gyrus in working memory system.

  • 본 연구에서는 알코올 사용 장애 대학생과 정상인을 대상으로 부적정서(슬픔)를 유발하고 슬픔 관련 뇌 기능 차이를 규명하고자 하였다. 실험참가자로 11명의 알코올 사용 장애 대학생과 7명의 정상인을 선정하였다. 슬픔 정서 유발을 위해 예비 실험을 거친 슬픔 유발 시청각 동영상 자극을 1분 30초 동안 제시하였다(통제자극 30초). 슬픔 정서를 경험하는 동안, 알코올 사용 장애 대학생 집단은 좌측 Insula, 우측 Medial Fron-tal Gyrus, 좌측 Cingulate Gyrus, 좌측 Inferior Parietal Lobule이 활성화 되었다. 정상인 집단은 우측 Cuneus, 우측 Middle Occipital Gyrus, 우측 Precuneus, 좌측 Inferior Parietal Lobule이 활성화되었다. 결론적으로, 알코올 사용 장애 대학생과 정상인의 슬픔 자극을 처리할 때 관련된 뇌 기능에 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Purpose: We investigated the statistical methods to compose the functional brain map of human working memory and the principal factors that have an effect on the methods for localization. Materials and Methods: Repeated PET scans with successive four tasks, which consist of one control and three different activation tasks, were performed on six right-handed normal volunteers for 2 minutes after bolus injections of 925 MBq $H_2^{15}O$ at the intervals of 30 minutes. Image data were analyzed using SPM96 (Statistical Parametric Mapping) implemented with Matlab (Mathworks Inc., U.S.A.). Images from the same subject were spatially registered and were normalized using linear and nonlinear transformation methods. Significant difference between control and each activation state was estimated at every voxel based on the general linear model. Differences of global counts were removed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with global activity as covariate. Using the mean and variance for each condition which was adjusted using ANCOVA, t-statistics was performed on every voxel To interpret the results more easily, t-values were transformed to the standard Gaussian distribution (Z-score). Results: All the subjects carried out the activation and control tests successfully. Average rate of correct answers was 95%. The numbers of activated blobs were 4 for verbal memory I, 9 for verbal memory II, 9 for visual memory, and 6 for conjunctive activation of these three tasks. The verbal working memory activates predominantly left-sided structures, and the visual memory activates the right hemisphere. Conclusion: We conclude that rCBF PET imaging and statistical parametric mapping method were useful in the localization of the brain regions for verbal and visual working memory.

  • 목적: 일반인과 외상성 스트레스 장애환자들(PTSD)에서 동일한 공포 자극에 대한 기능적 뇌 자기ㆍ공명영상에서 뇌 활성화 부위의 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 대조군 (여자9명)과 외상성 스트레스 장애로(PTSD) 진단된 환자군 (여자9명)을 대상으로 하였고 모두 오른손잡이였다. 외상성 스트레스 장애군은 모두 교통사고와 관련되어 있었다. 1.5T MR 기기에서 EPI BOLD 기법을 이용하여 24개의 axial slice를 얻었으며, 시각자극으로 교통사고 현장 사진과 비교군으로 체크 무의 사진을 무작위로 배열하여 각각 1초씩 보여 주었다 (event related design). SOA (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony)는 3.5초로 하였고 전체 영상은 10분 동안 얻었다. 모든 환자에서 기능적 자기공명 영상은 1차례 시행하였다. 영상후 처리는 SPM 분석 프로그램을 사용하였으며 황성화 신호의 유의수준은 p=0.01을 기준으로 활성화 영상을 얻었다. 활성화 신호를 육안으로 비교 분석하였고 해마, 편도핵, 전전두엽의 활성화 정도를 중심으로 평가하였다.

The impact of functional brain change by transcranial direct current stimulation effects concerning circadian rhythm and chronotype (일주기 리듬과 일주기 유형이 경두개 직류전기자극에 의한 뇌기능 변화에 미치는 영향 탐색)

  • Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation that is able to alter neuronal activity in particular brain regions. Many studies have researched how tDCS modulates neuronal activity and reorganizes neural networks. However it is difficult to conclude the effect of brain stimulation because the studies are heterogeneous with respect to the stimulation parameter as well as individual difference. It is not fully in agreement with the effects of brain stimulation. In particular few studies have researched the reason of variability of brain stimulation in response to time so far. The study investigated individual variability of brain stimulation based on circadian rhythm and chronotype. Participants were divided into two groups which are morning type and evening type. The experiment was conducted by Zoom meeting which is video meeting programs. Participants were sent experiment tool which are Muse(EEG device), tdcs device, cell phone and cell phone holder after manuals for experimental equipment were explained. Participants were required to make a phone in frount of a camera so that experimenter can monitor online EEG data. Two participants who was difficult to use experimental devices experimented in a laboratory setting where experimenter set up devices. For all participants the accuracy of 98% was achieved by SVM using leave one out cross validation in classification in the the effects of morning stimulation and the evening stimulation. For morning type, the accuracy of 92% and 96% was achieved in classification in the morning stimulation and the evening stimulation. For evening type, it was 94% accuracy in classification for the effect of brain stimulation in the morning and the evening. Feature importance was different both in classification in the morning stimulation and the evening stimulation for morning type and evening type. Results indicated that the effect of brain stimulation can be explained with brain state and trait. Our study results noted that the tDCS protocol for target state is manipulated by individual differences as well as target state.

Dissociation of the semantic and syntactic processing reflected on fMRI in Korean sentences (기능적 자기공명영상에 나타난 한글 의미.통사 문장 처리의 해리)

  • 본 연구에서는 기능적 자기공명영상을 이용하여 한글 문장의 의미와 통사 처리에 관한 뇌의 활성화 양상을 비교함으로써 한글문장 이해의 과정에 대한 신경해부학적 증거를 찾고자 하였다. 6명의 자원자를 대상으로 문장진위판단과제를 이용하여 활성화를 유도하였다. 1.5T 초전도 자기공명영상 장치에서 EPI로 BOLD 기법을 이용하여 기능적 영상을 얻었으며 영상 후 처리는 SPM99 분석 프로그램을 이용하였다. 의미관련 통사관련 문장 모두에서 좌 우 전두회(frontal gyrus) 영역에서 활성화되었다. 의미와 통사처리 영역을 구분하기 위하여 감산법을 적용한 결과, 의미처리는 좌반구의 중측두회(middle temporal gyrus) 영역에서, 통사처리는 우반구의 하전두회(BA44) 부위에서 더 많이 활성화되었다. 의미처리에서 더 우세한 성향을 띠는 부위로 밝혀진 중측두회 영역은 의미처리시에 활성화되는 영역으로 보고하는 기존의 연구와 일치하는 결과이다. 의미와 통사 문장처리시의 뇌 활성화 양상은 뇌의 여러 영역에서 중첩되어 있기는 하지만, 특정영역에서의 차이를 보이고 있으므로, 의미와 통사처리는 다른 기전(mechanism)에 의해서 일어남을 시사해 준다.

  • To do an experimental analysis in this paper, we divided two non-equivalent control groups, such as pre and post test groups for difference listening types by serious game contents. From these test groups, we can achieve the most ability of its activity quotient (ACQ) effect is a phonic type and the next one is an aural type. The purpose of this paper is focused on the quantitative analysis of the human's brain quotient (BQ) derived from serious educational game contents.

  • In this research, we design and perform experiment to investigate whether neuronal activity patterns elicited while solving game tasks are spontaneously reactivated in during sleep. In order to recognize human activity EEG-fMRI signals are used at the same time. Experimental results shows that reward for the success of tasks performed before sleeping have an effect on sleep brain activity. The study uncovers a neural mechanism whereby rewarded life experiences are preferentially replayed and consolidated while we sleep.
