  • In this paper we examined the mutural relation of quadrilateral for the purpose to know the reason why we taught the mutural relation of quadrilateral in elementary school. We looked through the several materials, for example, national curriculum, textbooks, guide books for teachers in 1st, 2nd, 3rd curriculums. Finally we found that the mutural relation of quadrilateral was deeply involved in the concept of sets, or the concept of inclusion.

  • The use of evidence is very important in scientific argumentation. This study investigated the types and levels of evidence in scientific argumentation in an elementary science class. 34 fourth graders in a class were selected as subjects, and argumentation was performed in seven lessons on 'Heat transfer and our lives' unit. Small group argumentation was recorded, transcribed and used as data for analyses. The analyses found the following results. First, in regard of the types of evidence, personal evidence dominated over authority-based evidence. Second, in the analysis of the levels of evidence, using inappropriate evidence was found to account for the highest percentage, followed by using appropriate evidence and just arguments without evidence. There were quite a lot of cases of arguments without evidence. It was found that the types and levels of evidence that students used could change depending on the relevance between experiments and argument tasks.

  • This study investigated tile intuitive level of justification in geometry, as the former step to the aximatization, with concrete examples. First, we analyze limitations that the axiomatic method has in tile context of discovery and the educational situation. This limitations can be supplemented by the proper use of the intuitive method. Then, using the histo-genetic analysis, this study shows the process of the development of geometrical thought consists of experimental, intuitive, and axiomatic steps. The intuitive method of proof which is free from the rigorous axiom has an advantage that can include the context of discovery. Finally, this paper presents the issue of intuitive proving that the three angles of an arbitrary triangle amount to 180$^{\circ}$, as an example of the local systematization.

  • This study aims to examine how the use of Padlet, an online platform, affects students' English writing anxiety and English writing strategy in online college English writing classes. A total of 64 college students participated in the study and completed the survey including English writing anxiety, English writing strategy and demographic information. For the study, we divided participants into 2 groups, experimental group using Padlet for their writing tasks and control group using college e-learning during a semester. The results showed that students using Padlet used more writing strategies than the students using college e-learning platform. The use of Padlet, however, was not statistically significant on writing anxiety. English writing anxiety was differed by English level, but decreased at the end of semester regardless of English level. The results imply that Padlet is a useful online learning tool for English learners to actively use English writing strategies and even for learners with low English writing proficiency.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of group discussion and classroom discussion in the scientific modeling of the particulate model of matter. 7th graders in Seoul participated in this study. We implemented science instructions based on the GEM cycle of scientific modeling. We analyzed the differences between group discussion and classroom discussion in three steps: exploring thoughts, comparing thoughts, and drawing conclusions. We also looked into the level of argumentations of the students in the modeling activities. The analysis of the results indicated that students generated a group model by extracting commonalities from each model of their group members, and then they evaluated and modified the group model by comparing the differences among the models in classroom discussion. The main step involved in group discussion was 'exploring thoughts', whereas in classroom discussion it was 'comparing thoughts'. Although the levels of argumentation among the students were generally low, most students participated with enthusiasm, as they expressed their interest and had positive perception in the modeling activities. As a result, the modeling activities were found to have positive influences on concept development. Some suggestions to implement the modeling activities in science teaching effectively were discussed.

  • BLAISE, a information communication system England, has been developed steadily and expanded a network to the European countries, which reflects recognition of library at national level. In Japan, NACSIS has been established by a financial support from Ministry of Education and very active in networking throughout the nation. The development policy of their countries. In this study it is introduced a new concept, bibliographical information network and also suggested that bibliographical information system in Korea should be developed by expansion of KOR-MARC database.

  • Recently Professor Lee has suggested the analysis of the indicative conditional based on Sellars-Brandom's inferentialism. In this paper, I raise three questions. First, Professor Lee seems to misunderstand Sellars-Brandom in that he considers only the analytically valid arguments as materially valid inferences. Second, Professor Lee seems to misunderstand Sellars-Brandom in that whereas Sellars-Brandom talks about the common features of all kinds of conditionals including counterfactual conditionals, Professor Lee takes it as the analysis of the indicative conditional only. Third, either Professor Lee's analysis is incompatible with Sellars-Brandom inferentialism or his analysis is too general.

  • In this study, we used an analysis of the literature on socio-scientific issues (SSI) classes to examine domestic SSI class research and to determine the characteristics of SSI class research for each subject. A search for papers related to SSI classes published in Korea Citation Index-listed journals and candidate journals of the Korea Research Foundation found 95 relevant papers, which were then categorized according to participants and topics. Studies with both pre-service and experienced teachers attempted to investigate SSI-related perceptions. Studies of pre-service teachers tended to examine the level and development pattern of argumentation or to analyze decision-making characteristics and informal reasoning. Studies of experienced teachers tended to analyze instructional expertise in SSI teaching activities, focusing on teachers with substantial SSI teaching experience. Middle and high school students-related studies examined student decision-making and reasoning processes in SSI learning activities, developed SSI class programs, and analyzed educational effects. Examining the characteristics of SSI classes for elementary school students was difficult because few such studies have been published. However, the characteristics that elementary school students show in SSI learning situations could be inferred. A plan to revitalize SSI classes in the elementary science education field from the perspective of teacher education and class research is suggested.

  • The complex number system is supposed to introduce first chapter in the first grade of high school. When number system is expanded to complex numbers, the main aim is to understand preservation of algebraic structure with regard to the flow of curriculum and textbook. This research reviewed overall alternative articulation and treatment of textbooks from a logical viewpoint. Two research questions are developed below. First, in the structure of the current curriculum, when we consider student's 'level', how are the alternative articulation and treatment of textbooks in complex unit on a logical point of view? Second, What are more logical alternative articulation and treatment? What alternative articulation and treatment are suitable for a running goal? and what are the improvement which is definitive?

  • The safety case program has been prepared for the development of the disposal facility of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste in Korea. For the development of the radioactive waste disposal facility, this program can be applied for the safety demonstration of the facility and for the safety judgment of development step based on the international standards and domestic development environment. Systematic safety approach of this program includes the safety strategies such as optimization, robustness, demonstrability and defense-in-depth principle which are based on the safety principle and objectives. From the quality of assessment basis, safety arguments focused on the uncertainty management and the confidence building can assure the disposal safety during the step-wise safety assessment.
