  • This study has attempted to identify whether or not the effects of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness of the elderly on a suicidal ideation is mediated by the meaning in life and, during this process, examined if social participation known as a protective factor against elderly suicide has a moderating effect. For this, a total of 403 elderly men and women residing in Honam area have been selected as the subjects of the study, among whom self-report surveys have been conducted as to perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, meaning in life (presence of meaning/search for meaning) and social participation. The mediating analysis with the use of the process macro has identified the path where the perceived burdensomeness encourages a suicidal ideation through the presence of the meaning in life. On the other hand, the thwarted belongingness has turned out to be significant only in a direct path to a suicidal ideation. The analysis results of moderated mediating effects, including social participation have found that social participation does mediate the path to a suicidal ideation caused by the perceived burdensomeness through the presence of the meaning in life, verifying its moderated mediating effects.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore and understand the meaning of 'Good Death' that the Korean aged people are generally thinking based on their values and the sentiments. For this purpose, we carried out individual and in-depth interviews with 40 aged persons living in Seoul taking their genders and social-economic status into consideration from March to May 2003. We applied qualitative research method to this study. Eight graduate students were responsible for the interviews. They majored in gerontology or had experiences of field work with old persons. It took an average of one and a half hour and maximum of two hours for each of the interviews. All of the processes of each interview were tape-recorded under the agreement with each interviewee. The main and sub themes from the data can be classified to seven categories according to the Phenomenological Approach designed by Colaizzi(1978). The main theme of good death that most of the interviewees considered was 'Blessed Death', very similar to 'Death Fortune' in the five good fortunes found in Korean tradition and the Confucianism. Also, the main concept is classified to seven sub-themes: (1) Not seeing their children's death; (2) Dying in front of their children; (3) Not to be a burden of their children during their lives; (4) Dying after doing all of their duties as parents; (5) Dying with no pain; (6) Completing the natural span of their lives; and (7) Prepared death. Thus, 'Blessed Death' that Korean aged people consider seems to be very closely related with the lives, health, happiness and success of their children. Based on the findings, we concluded that both social policy makers and social service providers are required to keep in mind the meanings of 'Good death' that most of the Korean aged people consider in order to help them enjoy successful aging during their remaining lives.

  • Rapidly increasing aged population provides an ample market opportunity for the Korean travel industry, and from national policy perspective, it poses an fortified demands for welfare tourism. In the fierce competition, this emerging market can serve as a lucrative target market for tourism & travel industry in Korea. In addition, using tourism for the aged as a social welfare policy can be a potentially viable means to mitigate the increase social pressure due to rapid population aging. This rationale is based on the assumption that tourism contributes to higher level of perceived life satisfaction compared to other leisure activities among the aged. In this study, using empirical data collected from 185 respondents aged 55 and above in Cheong Ju area, the effect of demographic factors and trip-related behaviors on life satisfaction was tested. The results indicate that economic and health conditions affect life satisfaction positively, while trip-related behaviors did not exert any significant effect on life satisfaction. In light of the results, practical implications for marketing and policy-making were presented in detail.

  • This study is a qualitative study applied with in-depth interviews and phenomenological analysis. The objective of this study was finding out the function of the elder protection agency by interpreting the meaning developed from the experience of the workers about the role of the elder protective service agency. As a result of the analysis, the essential themes were 'Struggling and working hard', 'Obstacles that cannot be lifted', and 'Reaching the time to be reborn as an organization for the elderly human rights.' The common essence of these themes is 'The road to human rights orientation: a destination that must be reached, though not easy to go.' In order for the meanings to be settled and to fit in to the community, it was suggested it is a situation in which both internal and external renewal of the institution for the protection of the elderly is most needed. In addition, much as it turned out that legal and institutional support must be provided so that the elder protection agency can be reborn as human rights organizations with more professionalism, it was proposed to follow the institutional improvement plan derived from this study.

  • Our country is defenseless against the aging population in society that is suddenly and rapidly increasing. This is expressed as the aging shock and aged society earthquake, warning us of the crisis in the future society. Senior citizens of Korea are a group that does not receive proper education due to various social factors, and it is a group that requires lifelong education more than any other group, and therefore, senior citizens have become a priority target for lifelong education. Thus, the need for lifelong education for seniors can be said to be in establishing a new senior citizen image so that they may live a fuller retirement by improving their abilities to appropriately adapt to the rapidly changing modern society due to the digital times. Furthermore, with the enhanced cultural level and personal desire for a fuller life in the modern society, the necessity for leisure activities has been emphasized. Instead of simply relieving stress through leisure activities, it aims at being provided with educational opportunities through leisure activities. Therefore, senior leisure activity education should be an important method for establishing the senior citizen identity of a self-oriented senior, productive senior, volunteering senior, informed senior, and a well-rounded senior, which are all the image of senior citizens in the 21st century. In addition, a specialized leisure activity program that systematically provides education for leisure activities should be performed from the perspective of lifelong education. Hence, the significance of senior citizen leisure activities as lifelong education is in improving health, enhancing sociability and realizing one's self, while improving the quality of life for senior citizens. It will be greatly meaningful for establishing the new senior citizen image in which they independently live their own lives, while not being dependent on others, as required in the 21st century.
