  • In this study, we intend to develop a defective road surface object recognition model that automatically detects road surface defects that restrict the movement of the transportation handicapped using electric mobile devices with deep learning. For this purpose, road surface information was collected from the pedestrian and running routes where the electric mobility aid device is expected to move in five areas within the city of Busan. For data, images were collected by dividing the road surface and surroundings into objects constituting the surroundings. A series of recognition items such as the detection of breakage levels of sidewalk blocks were defined by classifying according to the degree of impeding the movement of the transportation handicapped in traffic from the collected data. A road surface object recognition deep learning model was implemented. In the final stage of the study, the performance verification process of a deep learning model that automatically detects defective road surface objects through model learning and validation after processing, refining, and annotation of image data separated and collected in units of objects through actual driving. proceeded.

  • In this paper, we propose a gait pattern recognition method for intelligent prosthesis that enables walking in various environments of femoral amputees. The proposed gait mode changing method is a single sensor based algorithm which can discriminate gait surface and gait phase using only strain gauges sensor, and it is designed to simplify the algorithm based on multiple sensors of existing intelligent prosthesis and to reduce cost of prosthesis system. For the recognition algorithm, we analyzed characteristics of the ground reaction force generated during gait of normal person and defined gait step segmentation and gait detection condition, A gait analyzer was constructed for the gait experiment in the environment similar to the femoral amputee. The validity of the paper was verified through the defined detection conditions and fabricated instruments. The accuracy of the algorithm based on the single sensor was 95%. Based on the proposed single sensor-based algorithm, it is considered that the intelligent prosthesis system can be made inexpensive, and the user can directly grasp the state of the walking surface and shift the walking mode. It is confirmed that it is possible to change the automatic walking mode to switch the walking mode that is suitable for the walking mode.

  • This study investigates the methodology to evaluate the quantified performance of pavement markings and traffic guide signs using digital images. This methodology is significant to attempt to quantify their performance without large brightness photometer at the nighttime and bad weather. The retroreflective performance of pavement markings are evaluated through the contrast of gray levels of pavements and markings in collected digital images under the case of rain, dampness, and dryness. In addition, the appraisal of retroreflective performance of traffic guide signs are implemented through the comparison between interior illuminated and the existing retroreflective traffic guide signs using the contrast of luminance extracted from the value of RGB of backgrounds and legends in collected digital images according to geometric design, driving lanes, and the distance between the car and the sign. As a result, the retroreflective performance of pavement markings deteriorates about 3.5 times and 2 times under the case of rain and dampness respectively than dryness. Also, the performance of the existing traffic guide signs is significantly influenced by geometric design, driving lanes, and the distance, otherwise interior illuminated traffic guide signs. This methodology can be utilized to construct objective information of performance of traffic safety facilities to select appropriate position of expensive high reflective pavement markings and interior illuminated traffic guide signs considering diverse weather and geometric design.

  • Visibility of lane marking is impaired at night, or in case of rain, and thereby threatens traffic safety. Recently, various studies and technology have been developed to improve lane marking visibility, such as the extension of lane marking life expectancy (up to 1.5 times), improvement of lane marking equipment, improvement of lane marking visibility (32.7%) by applying phosphorescent material mixed paint, and expressway lane design standards alternative (length 6m, gap 12m, width 13cm: 27.8% of painted surface are reduced) adoption with ergonomic analysis. In this study, a set of cost-benefit analyses was performed for the cases where such techniques were applied. Based on the literature review, 26.9% of traffic accidents would be prevented by improving lane marking visibility by 32.7%; accident reduction benefit was calculated as much as 12.5 billion KRW. Meanwhile, total increased cost when introducing phosphorescent material mixed paint and lane design standards alternative is calculated as 30.6 billion KRW. However, economic feasibility could not be secured with 0.41 of cost-benefit ratio when applied to the expressway network as a whole. Additionally, cost-benefit (B/C) analysis was applied to each of the top 20 night accident hot spots and the results of B/C ratios were between 0.67 and 4.20, showing that 11 out of 20 spot sections of expressway can have economic feasibility. This results indicate, with this kind of pavement marking applied to accident hot spots in rural expressway, better visibility and economic feasibility can be guaranteed through traffic accident reduction. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.

  • Rumble strip was introduced in highway pavement for driver's safety in Korea on 2000. With proving its effectiveness, total length of highway with rumble strip has increased. This research team suggested a modified form of the existing rumble strip, which was placed on new concrete pavement during construction. The modified construction equipment was applied on test section at PyungTeak-Eumsung highway with some performance experiments. Through the equation of stopping sight distance proposed AASHTO, the modified form is safer than the existing one due to 0.65m of extra width. The indoor noise test showed that the modified form $3.5{\sim}9dB(A)$ noisier than the main pavement, which wasn't applied by rumble method. Therefore, it was one of alternatives to prevent sleeping. The modified form made the frequency effected on man's eye. There were no differences of the noise and vibration between modified form and existing one. However, that driver who participated on operating test on that section felt that the former was safer than the latter. It can be concluded that modified form can be applied to the new concrete pavement, that will decrease traffic accident.

  • In the recent years, it is important to evaluate the durability and the reliability of the vehicle, aircraft, and structure. Especially, in case of the vehicle, the durability and reliability are tested by driving test after making prototype vehicles. However, these methods require many costs and efforts for the experiment are needed to react the defects of product. This problems can be settled by simulator which supplies the realistic environments. In this parer, four-axial road simulator with hydraulic power and driving program to operate are made up. The displacement road profile is realized by accelerometers. For the verification the real-vehicle experiment is executed and road profile obtained from the experiment is verified by four-axial road simulator.

  • This paper proposes a method for detecting the direction indicator shown in the road surface efficiently from the black box system installed on the vehicle. In the proposed method, the direction indicators are detected by inverse perspective mapping(IPM) and bag of visual features(BOF)-based NN classifier. In order to apply the proposed method to real-time environments, the candidated regions of direction indicator in an image only performs IPM, and BOF-based NN is used for the classification of feature information from direction indicators. The results of applying the proposed method to the road surface direction indicators detection and recognition, the detection accuracy was presented at least about 89%, and the method presents a relatively high detection rate in the various road conditions. Thus it can be seen that the proposed method is applied to safe driving support systems available.
