A wide variety of fashion materials focus on good drape property and softness. Among the recently emerging materials, Neoprene that consists of laminated knit on both sides of foamed neoprene sheet seeks a unique appearance that is considerably deviated from the current flow. Diverse processing methods for the newly released material heighten the value in function and beauty among trends of fashion materials by enhancing the appearance, touch and material property. Laser-cutting technique is one of the processing methods that is consistently used in the textile area. This study aimed to find the basic materials for applicability of laser-cutting technique to clothing goods after consideration of the changes in material property and drape shape, and to furthermore enforce different pattern conditions to Neoprene material, one of the newly attractive materials in the fashion area. In this study, we applied laser-cutting technique to Neoprene material sample under different conditions of pattern appearance, size and distance, based on current evaluation and theoretical background of Neoprene material, fashion trend and laser-cutting technique. Drape property can improve and the drape direction could also be controlled by a wide variety of laser-cutting techniques applied to Neoprene materials that have uniquely different appearances from most other textiles. This technique could be applied to the design for diversification of Neoprene clothing goods in the future.
This study confirmed the mechanical properties of an auxetic re-entrant pattern prepared using 3D printing technology and its composite fabric with neoprene for the production of functional auxetic patterns/textiles for safety shoes. Samples were prepared by the tilt angle of a re-entrant pattern of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°, and then analyzed using Poisson's ratio, bending, compression, and tensile properties. A 3D printed auxetic re-entrant pattern (3DP-RE) and its composite fabric (3DP-RE/NP) showed a negative Poisson's ratio in all tilting angles that indicated auxetic properties. The results of the bending property shown that strength of 3DP-RE/NP was 1.5 times lower than NP, but the strain improved 2.0 times. It was confirmed that the deformation of 3DP-RE/NP is possible with a low load. Each sample type of compression behavior indicated similar regardless of the tilting angles; in addition, the compression toughness of 3DP-RE/NP increased 1.2 times compared with NP. In the case of tensile properties, 3DP-RE and 3DP-RE/NP were affected by the tilting angle, samples with 90° (the opposite of load direction) showed best tensile property and toughness. 3DP-RE/NP indicated improved bending, compression, and tensile properties.
The most emphasized materials in the modern fashion are the elastic materials with the advent of sportswear. In the area of elastic materials, the technology of foaming plastics became main research area. As novel materials, latex and neoprene based fabrics are emerging for the elastic material, among those elastic material staged by renowned fashion designers. We searched those works through literature and pictures, and examined the physical properties. Neoprene composite with filament knit fabrics are excellent in strength and water-proof. Latex fabrics gave smooth feel and elastic feel. These may be adequate for aesthetic textile material. Based on these characteristics, these techno-texitiles will find broad applications in the fashionable materials.
Currently smart textile market is rapidly expanding and the demand is increasing integration of an electronic fiber circuit. The garments are an attractive platform for wearable device. This is one of the integration techniques, which consists of is the selective introduction of conductive yarns into the fabric through knitting, weaving or embroidering. The aim of this work is to develop a golf bend driven prototype design for an attachable Arduino that can be used to assess elbow motion. The process begins with the development of a wearable device technique that uses conductive yarn and flex sensor for measurement of elbow bending movements. Also this paper describes and discusses resistance value of zigzag embroidery of the conductive yarns on the tensile properties of the fabrics. Furthermore, by forming a circuit using an Arduino and flex sensor the prototype was created with an assistance band for golf posture training. This study provides valuable information to those interested in the future directions of the smart fashion industry.
A vibration isolation system for a large reverberation chamber (1,228 $m^3$ and 1,000 ton) has been installed and verified. The reverberation chamber generates loud noise and induces high level of vibration while performing spacecraft acoustic reliability tests. The isolation system prevents vibration transfer from the chamber to the enclosure buildings. This paper describes design process and commissioning experiments of the system. Design criteria have been derived from rigid body model of the chamber. The stiffness of neoprene pads has been selected by employing finite element analysis of the reverberant chamber and isolation system. A total of 21 neoprene pads have been installed between the chamber and supporting Pedestals. A sand bag of 800kg was dropped on the chamber floor to measure the natural frequency of the isolation system. While 136.9 dB noise is generated in the chamber, absolute transmissibility of the isolation system has been measured. The measured natural frequency of the chamber is 10.2Hz, which is 80% of the predicted value. Overall transmissibility at working frequency range (25∼10.000 Hz) is less than -12.4 dB.
This study compared the domestic and international commercial design patterns and domestic consumer preferences for wetsuit designs to develop a user-centered wetsuit design. An analysis of the domestic and international design elements for 1,802 wetsuits sold online over the past three years showed that the most frequent shapes, dominant colors, and patterns were the same, as consumers tended to buy full suits that were black or had geometric patterns. Dominant colors and assort/accent colors were different from the survey results. Men's wetsuits used fewer colors and patterns than women's suits. Domestic wetsuits used fewer patterns than those sold abroad; in addition, colors were applied differently. A consumer preference survey conducted on 213 male and female consumers in their 20s and their 50s in Korea indicated that 53.5% of respondents were the most affected by the shape when choosing a wetsuit design. The preferred color scheme was two colors, with a vivid tone used as an accent color. The factor analysis results on wetsuit design preference uncovered the six factors: individuality, display, function, acceptance, imitation, and comparison. An independent sample t-test also showed that men perceive individuality, imitations, and comparison factors higher than women.
