  • Appearance of cold water in the coastal area off Ulsan-Campo, Southeastern coast of Korea, during summer has been well observed. To see the effect of this cold water on zooplankton distribution, we have collected zooplankton at 4 to 8 sites in the near coast as well as off coast for three times about two weeks of interval from July to August, 2001. Appearance of cold water was confirmed and total of about 195 zooplankton taxa were identified. Both the numbers of taxa appeared and zooplankton abundances did not show significant difference among the three sampling periods. On the other hand, the numbers of taxa appeared were generally greater in off coastal area while zooplankton abundances were greater in the near coastal area. These two variables showed different relationship with seawater temperatures. That is, the numbers of taxa appeared showed positive correlation with seawater temperatures (p<0.05) but abundances showed no significant relationship (p>0.05) with seawater temperatures of which variations were comparable with seasonal variations. It was postulated that the upwelling induced appearance of cold water enriched the nutrients, enhanced phytoplankton production and then provided better food conditions for smaller zooplankton in the near coastal part of this study area. In this context it was postulated that zooplankton distribution in the upwelling area might be controlled by food condition rather than seawater temperatures in spite of the large temperature variations caused by the appearance of cold water.

  • In this study, numerical experiments were conducted to identify distribution of rising flow and flux in the East Sea of Korea, where the coastal upwelling occurs. Temperature and salinity data from CTD observations and NIFS during summer 2013 were applied to the model. Numerical experiments were carried out with different wind speed (3, 6 m/s and 9 m/s) and direction (southerly and southwesterly), which represent the most frequent in summer conditions. As a result of calculation, upwelling flow rate was found to be highest in Pohang between five coasts(Hupo, Youngduk, Pohang, Ulsan and Busan). Comparing with southerly wind conditions, the rising flow rate is about 1.5 times greater when southwesterly wind was applied. Horizontal diffusion of the upwelling area is expected to have a speed of 17~22 km/day when a 9 m/s southwesterly wind is applied. If this wind continues over one week, a cold pool will be generated by upwelling that may reach to the Ulleung area.

  • In coastal and inland bays, where most of Korea's aquaculture is located, massive aquaculture damage occurs every year due to frequent anomalous high water temperatures. The interannual fluctuations of water temperature in July over the past four years (2018-2021) were the second largest since 1990 (after the period of 1994-1997) due to anomalous high temperatures, rainy seasons, and typhoons. Through analysis of heat flux and heat balance in areas of concern for high water temperatures (i.e., Cheonsu Bay, Gamak Bay, Guryongpo), the occurrence of high water temperatures in Cheonsu Bay and Gamak Bay in the summer seasons was confirmed to derive mainly from heat inflow through the sea surface from the air. Based on estimations of the average ocean heat transport rate in July for the four-year period of 2018-2021, Cheonsu Bay and Gamak Bay accounted for 13.5% and 62.3% outflow of the net heat flux, respectively. However, the ocean heat transport rate in Guryongpo Hajeong differed significantly from -174.5% to 132.5% of the net heat flux by year depending on the occurrence of cold water mass.

  • The objective of this paper is to explore the short-term variability of water temperature and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) derived from in-situ and satellite data (NOAA, Sea WiFS and QuikScat) in the upwelling region of the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula in June and August, 2007. Particularly we focused on the spatial variability of sea surface temperature(SST) and Chl-a in the East Korean Warm Current region. In the results of the in-situ data, the peaks of Chl-a in june was shown at a depth of 50m The peaks of Chl-a in August was shown at a depth of 10m at the stations 4 and 5 near the land, and a depth of 30m at the other stations. The Chl-a concentrations in August were also lower than those in june except for station 5. As a result, the peaks of Chl-a in August occurred at a depth of 20~40 m shallower than those of Chl-a in june. This indicates that the nutrient-rich water within the mixed layer depth may be immediately supplied by the coastal upwelling, which is due to the southerly component of wind. The relationship between SST and Chl-a showed a negative correlation, and the high concentration of Chl-a occurred in the cold water area. The southerly wind and the East Korean Warm Current influenced a remarkable offshore movement of the cold water and Chl-a near the coastal area.

  • The oceanographical condition of the southeastern area off Korea is inverestigated in the point of view of the fluctuation of the thermal front. although the fearure of the front is somewhat complicate, it can be classified intl three types. the first type is elongated toward north with the narrow cold water belt inside the front. The second type is almost parallel with the latitude of 36 N and the third type is the irregular one in which the cyclonic cold water mass and the anticyclonic warm water mass develop equally. The north-south directed fronts are strengthened either by the supply of the warm Daema Current (Tsushima Current in Japanese) of by the appearance of the cold North Korean Water along the coast. In the first type the thermocline inclines up toward the coast when the southward component of the wind is weakened. On the other hand, in the second typr the homogeneous and medium warm water spreads up to the coast and the latitude of 36 N, the second type front is formed.

  • In order to find the interaction between phosphorus and nitrogen effects during low temperature treatment, experiments of rice planted late at low water temperature were conducted and the following results were obtained. As the application of phosphorus increased, the soluble nitrogen content in the rice plants was decreased, while the degree of ripening was improved, especially when the application of nitrogen increased. When the heading was promoted due to high temperature, degree of ripening was improved. The number of spikelets increased due to the increased application of nitrogen fertilizers, and then The effects of phosphorus application on the improvement of ripening was less apparent.

  • This work investigates the relationship between the sea breeze circulation and ozone concentrations during cold water events in the southeastern coastal area of the Korean Peninsula, where coastal upwelling frequently occur. This analysis was performed based on the classification of two categories, such as cold water and non-cold water events, over the period of 2000-2009. The low air temperature ($0.5^{\circ}C$), low SST ($5^{\circ}C$) and the wind direction(southerly) are the features of the cold water events in the Southeastern coastal area. Moreover, ozone concentrations in the cases of the sea breeze circulation and cold water events were significantly lower (below 30 ppb) than those (70~100 ppb) in the non-clod water events, because of the low air temperature ($10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$) and high wind speed (3~5 m/s) around the southeastern coastal area.

  • Daily time series of longshore sea surface temperature (SST) data at 3 stations, sea surface SST data at 58 stations in the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsular from 2001 to 2005 were used in order to study the temporal and spatial variations of the upwelling coastal cold water occurred in summer season. When the cold water occurred, SST has been decreased more than $-5^{\circ}C$ in a day. The cold water occurred frequently in the eastern coastal areas of Korea such as Ulgi, Kampo, Jukbyun. Daily variations of cold water temperature were quantified using remote control buoy system at Kijang in the southeastern coastal water from July to August in 2004. Hourly variations of SST occurred around $\pm3^{\circ}C$ when cold water disappeared at Kijang. There were close relationship between the strength of East Korean Warm Current, North Korean Cold Water and the scale of spatio-temporal cold water variations in summer season.

  • The diet composition of juvenile gold-eye rockfish, Sebastes thompsoni (40-50 mm SL), was examined based on 121 individuals collected in the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water in August 2016. The Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water is characterized a by water mass of <$10.0^{\circ}C$ and 33 psu. The juvenile gold-eye rockfish fed on Amphipods [57.3% index of relative importance (IRI)] and Euphausiacea (32.9%). Most of the point in the prey-specific abundance plot indicated a high between-phenotype component (BPC).
