  • The study of ocean surface mixed layer modelling has three different approaches: integral models. diffusive models including K theory and higher turbulence closure scheme, and transilient models. None of them is suitable for all occasions because each model has its specific merits and defects. In the present paper, these three types mixed layer models are described, and their relative advantages and applicabilities are discussed in order to guide the researchers who initiate ocean mixed layer study.

  • As information technology has been developed in a rapid way, a lot of users get to be familiar with social media. Accordingly, the possibility of social media for educational use has increased. From the view point of learning, social media help learners make communities of practice that can lead to collective intelligence. In this study, two different types of social media, synchronous and asynchronous, were compared in terms of usage patterns in the e-learning settings of college level. Content analysis has figured out four factors: learning content, tasks and assignments, emotional communications, and chatting. There found to be a statistical differences in the postings in all of the factors except tasks and assignments. In the qualitative interviews, the participants told various usage patterns of synchronous and asynchronous social media. In sum, the learners generally preferred synchronous social media. Rather, asynchronous social media were mainly used for deep thinking and summarizing. Last, suggestions were made to improve educational environments for the learners in the digital and social media age.

  • Recently, together with increasing use of multimedia data, many works on moving objects in video databases have been made. Moving objects change visual features and spatial positions with the lapse of time in video data. And they arc related to the other objects or events. In this paper, we propose a new modeling and various query types of moving objects for content based retrieval in video databases. The proposed modeling represents visual features, moving trajectories and semantic contents related to objects. Therefore, it allows to process various query types. And we propose various query operators for the retrieval types. To show the superiority of our modoling, we implement the retrieval systems and compare it with the existing methods in terms of the supporting query types. The proposed method supports various query types and improves the efficiency of the query processing over the existing methods.

  • Biographical information about people is usually collected and provided by a company or an institute which has a specific standard to select people for service. Recently, user oriented contents service like Wikipedia has started biographical information service, Wikipedia Biography Portal, in which users select people and freely describe about them. This study collected 500 biographical data from three categories of Wikipedia biography portal such as criminals, faculty, and directors. The contents of data from each category were analyzed with the word frequency and the divergence indicator to identify the characteristics of each category. As a result, divergency indicator is effective to represent the differential factors of each category. This study provides word clouds of top 100 word with divergence indicator and top 100 common words of three categories with word frequency as a guide for users to write about a person in these categories and for editors to accept and monitor the biography from users.

  • Visual representation has been a useful tool in mathematical problem solving because it vividly express and structure the variables in the problem. But its effects may vary according to the types of problems. So, this study analyzes the survey results on the 5th graders' visual representations using questionnaire consisting of the routine problems and the non-routine problems. The results are follows: The rate of correct answers in routine problems was higher than that of the non-routine problems. Even though the subjects were asked to solve the problem using visual representations, the ratio of solving the problem using the numerical expression was high in the routine problems. On the other hand, the rate of solving the problem using visual representation was high in the non-routine problems. The number of respondents who used visual representation in the non-routine problems was twice as many as that of the routine problems. But, among the subjects who used visual representation in the non-routine problems, the proportion of incorrect answers was also high, which resulted in using visual pictures. So, it is necessary to provide an experience that can use various types of the visual representations for problem solving and pay attention to the process of converting problems into visual representations.

  • In this paper, I examine the history of split screens, primarily seek to explain types of them, and explore the narrative meaning of each type in feature films. In short, I try to categorize the types of split screens and present a figure of them according to events and characters, focusing the relations between/among simultaneous images and narrative meanings. In addition, I assert that split screen have altered some methods of filmic storytelling and the ontology of screen. Story lines no longer have to be linear and the screen need not to remain a window through which we can see another world. The screen has come to be a canvas upon which several images can be arranged for narrative purposes.

  • We developed a small-group training program for in-service teachers focused on scientific modeling. We collected the discourses of the teachers who participated in the activity and analyzed them by type. The training program employed a collaborative approach in which a small group completed tasks and produced outputs based on the theme of 'galaxies and the Universe' to enable practical application in classes. Three in-service science teachers participated in the training program. Their discourses were recorded, transcribed, and classified into types based on individual turns and interaction units. The language expressions of the teachers reflected the unique characteristics of the teaching profession, with each participant having preferred language expression types, albeit with a generally low prevalence of specific language expression types across the participants. Differences in discourse characteristics related to the modeling theme, task presentation method, and model types, revealed that variations in the proportion of interaction unit types during the modeling design, build, and evaluation stages were primarily influenced by the teachers' familiarity with the modeling theme. While the task presentation method also influenced interaction types, model types had little impact on the distribution of interaction types. Considering these findings, training programs on modeling for in-service teachers should include a checklist to encourage sufficient interaction between participants as well as propose proper questions that can be effectively addressed through collaboration.

  • Cartoons exhibit contents and images and deliver them to readers by repeating frames. Frames embody the cross sectional factors of space-time, and the repetition of frames makes those cross sectional factors into a continuous flow. The gutter, which exists between frames, takes the role to make the continuous flow link smoothly, and at the beginning stage of the gutter, the operating of the gutter was usually passive by the frame meanings. However, the gutter is not just a medium for linking the frames, but is an efficient participation device for creating new expression methods of cartoon organization. By producing new directing methods for cartoon organization, the distinctive functions of the gutter have been kept alive with cartoon history. The distinctive functions of the gutter can be divided largely into transition function, reminiscence function, speech balloon function, pen function, and decorative function. And those functions perform actively as direct expression method of the gutter. When those functional methods are expressed by the author's intention and the frequency of them is generalized according to described contents, using each author's individual differences can suggest direction for new directing organization of cartoons.
