Korean prosodic properties between read and spontaneous speech (한국어 낭독과 자유 발화의 운율적 특성)

  • This study aims to clarify the prosodic differences in speech types by examining the Korean read speech and spontaneous speech in the Korean part of the L2 Korean Speech Corpus (speech corpus for Korean as a foreign language). To this end, the articulation length, articulation speed, pause length and frequency, and the average fundamental frequency values of sentences were set as variables and analyzed via statistical methodologies (t-test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis). The results found that read speech and spontaneous speech were structurally different in the form of prosodic phrases constituting each sentence and that the prosodic elements differentiating each speech type were articulation length, pause length, and pause frequency. The statistical results show that the correlation between articulation speed and articulation length was highest in read speech, explaining that the longer a given sentence is, the faster the speaker speaks. In spontaneous speech, however, the relationship between the articulation length and the pause frequency in a sentence was high. Overall, spontaneous speech produces more pauses because short intonation phrases are continuously built to make a sentence, and as a result, the sentence gets lengthened.

IP generating factors and rules of read speech and dialogue in Korean (대화체와 낭독체의 억양구 형성에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 발화 유형을 대화체와 낭독체의 두 가지로 구분하여 각 발화 유형에서 억양구를 형성하는 특징을 살펴보았다. 실험 결과, 한 문장 내에 두 개 이상의 억양구가 생성되는 경우와 접속문의 경우에는 낭독체에서 더 많은 억양구가 형성되었다. 대화체에서 더 많은 억양구가 형성되는 경우는 주로 주어 다음에 억양구가 형성되는 경우이며, 대화체 발화에서는 한 문장내에 두 개 이상의 억양구가 형성된 경우는 존재하지 않았다. 이러한 실험 결과를 바탕으로 억양구의 형성이 음절수뿐만 아니라 문장의 구조에 영향을 받으며, 이 두 가지 요인이 발화 유형에 따라 다르게 적용된다는 운율적 특징을 파악할 수 있다.

Study on the realization of pause groups and breath groups (휴지 단위와 호흡 단위의 실현 양상 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the realization of pause and breath groups from adult speakers and to examine how gender, generation, and tasks can affect this realization. For this purpose, we analyzed forty-eight male or female speakers. Their generation was divided into two groups: young, old. Task and gender affected both the realization of pause and breath groups. The length of the pause groups was longer in the read speech than in the spontaneous speech and female speech. On the other hand, the length of the breath group was longer in the spontaneous speech and the male speech. In the spontaneous speech, which requires planning, the speaker produced shorter length of pause group. The short sentence length of the reading material influenced the reason for which the length of the breath group was shorter in the reading speech. Gender difference resulted from difference in pause patterns between genders. In the case of the breath groups, the male speaker produced longer duration of pause than the female speaker did, which may be due to difference in lung capacity between genders. On the other hand, generation did not affect either the pause groups or the breath groups. The generation factor only influenced the number of syllables and the eojeols, which can be interpreted as the result of the difference in speech rate between generations.

Speaker age estimation and acoustic characteristics: According to pitch and speech rate (화자 연령 지각과 음성적 특성: 음높이와 발화 속도를 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to investigate the correlation between speaker's chronological age (CA) and perceived age (PA) and to specify the effect of pitch and speech rate as acoustic cue on judging age, using perceptual testing and acoustic analysis. Three tasks were conducted to identify the degree of listener's accuracy about age estimation. Three perception tasks were conducted to measure the accuracy of 80 Korean listeners when presented with different types of speech. In all the tasks, participants listened to speech samples and gave their estimate of the speaker's age in figures. It was found that Korean listeners are able to gauge the age of a speaker fairly precisely. CA and mean PA were positively correlated in all three tasks. It is clear that the amount and type of information included in the voice samples affected the accuracy of a listener's judgement. Moreover, the result revealed that listeners make use of acoustic information such as pitch and speech rate to estimate speaker's age.

A realization of pauses in utterance across speech style, gender, and generation (과제, 성별, 세대에 따른 휴지의 실현 양상 연구)

  • This paper dealt with how realization of pauses in utterance is affected by speech style, gender, and generation. For this purpose, we analyzed the frequency and duration of pauses. Pauses were categorized into four types: pause with breath, pause with no breath, utterance medial pause, and utterance final pause. Forty-eight subjects living in Seoul were chosen from the Korean Standard Speech Database. All subjects engaged in reading and spontaneous speech, through which we could also compare the realization between the two speech styles. The results showed that utterance final pauses had longer durations than utterance medial pauses. It means that utterance final pause has a function that signals the end of an utterance to the audience. For difference between tasks, spontaneous speech had longer and more frequent pauses because of cognitive reasons. With regard to gender variables, women produced shorter and less frequent pauses. For male speakers, the duration of pauses with breath was significantly longer. Finally, for generation variable, older speakers produced more frequent pauses. In addition, the results showed several interaction effects. Male speakers produced longer pauses, but this gender effect was more prominent at the utterance final position.

  • This paper is for the comparison of prosodic phrasing in Korean spontaneous speech and read speech. For this comparison, The subjects read the transcriptions from their own spontaneous speech. The number of IP in spontaneous speech is more than in read speech, while The number of AP has no difference between them. A accentual phrase in spontaneous speech has less syllable than read speech.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of Young and Elderly Adult Patients with Voice Disorders during Continuous Speech (젊은 성인 및 노인 음성장애 환자의 연속발화시 공기역학적 특성 비교)

  • This study was performed to compare the aerodynamic characteristics of young and elderly adult male patients with voice disorders during continuous speech. Aerodynamic measurements were obtained after 12 young male patients and 9 elderly male patients read a paragraph. The elderly group showed longer duration, lower airflow rate and air volume than the younger group, but the differences were not significant except phonation time. So, when interpreting the meaning of aerodynamic measures of elderly voice disorder patients in the aspects of airflow and air volume, it should take into account various conditions(e. g. reading materials, pulmonary functions) as well as age.

Prediction of Break Indices in Korean Read Speech (국어 낭독체 발화의 운율경계 예측)

  • This study aims to model Korean prosodic phrasing using CART(classification and regression tree) method. Our data are limited to Korean read speech. We used 400 sentences made up of editorials, essays, novels and news scripts. Professional radio actress read 400sentences for about two hours. We used K-ToBI transcription system. For technical reason, original break indices 1,2 are merged into AP. Differ from original K-ToBI, we have three break index Zero, AP and IP. Linguistic information selected for this study is as follows: the number of syllables in ‘Eojeol’, the location of ‘Eojeol’ in sentence and part-of-speech(POS) of adjacent ‘Eojeol’s. We trained CART tree using above information as variables. Average accuracy of predicting NonIP(Zero and AP) and IP was 90.4% in training data and 88.5% in test data. Average prediction accuracy of Zero and AP was 79.7% in training data and 78.7% in test data.

  • 본 논문은 HTML을 분석하여 추출된 내용을 트리로 표현하여 문서구조안내에 이용하고, 웹 문서의 내용의 숙독 필요성에 따라 실시간으로 음성 발화속도를 제어할 수 있는 음성 웹 브라우저의 설계와 구현에 관한 것이다. 이 시스템의 특징은 웹 브라우저 상에 태그로 표현된 모든 요소를 추출하고, 이러한 정보를 트리로 표현하고 음성인식으로 정보를 선택하도록 하고, 선택한 정보의 이도와 필요성에 따라 사용자가 실시간 발화속도제어를 통하여 정보를 쉽게 알 수 있도록 했다. 이 방식은 문서의 내용에 따른 구조를 쉽게 인식하여 사용자가 빠른 시간 내에 필요한 정보를 수집할 수 있고, 문서가 발음되는 것을 청취하여 문서의 필요성을 인식하고, 숙독 필요성에 따라 실시간으로 낭독 속도를 제어할 수 있는 장점이 있다.
