A Study on Interest and Application Ability in Meal Management of the middle School Students (남.녀 중학생의 식생활관리 단원에 대한 관심도 및 실행 능력)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of interest and application ability in meal management chapters of the middle school students, and to provide basic informations for the improvements of Home Economics curriculum and teaching projects. The subjects were 555 middle school students(275 males, 280 females) in Chunchon area, Kangwon-do. Research data were collected by means of the questionnaire and statistically analyzed by frequency, percentage, standard deviation, t-test, F-test and correlation analysis using SPSS/win. The results of this study were summarized as follows: There were significant differences in the degree of interest and application ability according to gender, school years, home economics scholastic achievements, and father's role in preparing meal. The degree of interest and application ability was significantly higher in female than male. First grade students showed more interest and higher application ability than the third year. In general, the higher home economics scholastic achievement was, the higher the degree of interest and application ability was. The more father's role was in preparing meal, the higher student's degree of interest and application ability was. There was significant correlation between the degree of interest and the degree of application ability.(r=0.853, p< .001)

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the pattern of human developmental growth with empirical anthropometric data for the establishment of the sizing system of junior high school student\`s uniforms. The sample size was 881 boys and 762 girls between age 12 and 14. An anthropometric database used for this study was the 1992 national anthropometric survey of Korea. The result obtained are as follows ; 1. Several items of anthropometric data on junior high school students students showed significant differences in accordance with age and sex. In the meantime, there was no difference on the item of height under the age of 12 between sex, however, significant difference on that age of 13 or over. The hip girth was the biggest growth rate among tyhe item of girth. The somatotype of boys is straight, while girls\` shows a curved line. The bodytype of girls shows slim waist, fat belly and hip girth. 2. The result of factor analysis indicated that the first factor was composed with girth, depth and width-measures, and the second factor of height, length-measures. The third factors were consisted of items of representing bodytype of trunk, and the fourth, bodytype of lower part of trunk. 3. The result of cluster analysis indicated that boys were sybdivided into 3 types and girls 4 types.

  • This study was designed to observe the nutritional knowledge, dietary life, and health condition in the middle school students. The subjects of this study were sampled out from co-ed middle schools in Seoul. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The subjects take breakfast everyday by 50.4%, and their lunch depends very largely upon a lunch box by 95.2%. They take supper every evening by 79.0%. 2. The nutritional knowledge of subjects exhibits a significant difference by sex and region 3. The physical health condition of students exhibits a significant difference by sex and grade. 4. The mental health condition of students also exhibits a significant difference by sex, grade, and region. The school is required to endeavour for the student to have a correct understanding of nutritional knowledge form good dietary life. The government also should exert incessant efforts for school meal supply for their balanced nutrition.

Relationships among Body Image Concern, Restrained Eating Behavior and Self-esteem of Middle School Students in One City (남.녀 중학생의 신체관심도, 절제식이행동과 자아존중감의 관계 - 일개 시를 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among TV involvement, body image concern, restrained eating behavior and self-esteem of middle school students in one city. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. A total of 229 boys and 267 girls enrolled in the middle schools completed self report questionnaire in June, 2009. The data was analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: Of boys, 24.5% was over-weight/obese while 12.7% of girls was over-weight/obese. Compared to boys, girls involved more in TV (p<.001), and showed more body image concern, and restrained eating behavior (p<.001), but had lower self-esteem (p=.020). A significant positive correlation between TV involvement and body image concern was found in both boys and girls. However, only girls showed a negative association between TV involvement and self-esteem, and as well as between restrained eating behavior and self-esteem. As grouped by BMI, both boys and girls showed significantly different scores in restrained eating behavior (p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that the increased number of obese young adolescent need a weight management program including control for unhealthy eating behavior. The influence of mass-media on distorted body image for adolescents should be corrected. Also, an intervention for young obese girls to promote their self-esteem needs to be developed.

Awareness and Use of Fast Food on Elementary School 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Students in Pyeongtaek City (평택시 초등학생의 패스트푸드에 대한 인식과 이용)

  • 최근 아동들 사이에서 칼로리가 높고 간단하게 먹을 수 있는 인스턴트식품이나 패스트푸드 등의 섭취가 증가하는 경향과 함께 비만 등 영양적인 문제점이 크게 부각되고 있다. 특히 아동기는 식습관 형성에 중요한 시기이므로 올바른 식품선택은 무엇보다 중요하다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 초등학교 학생들의 올바른 식생활문화를 형성하기 위한 자료로 활용하고자 평택 초등학교 2개교의 4, 5, 6학년 300명을 대상으로 패스트푸드 섭취실태를 조사하였다. 평균연령은 11.7세, 키는 141.5cm, 몸무게는 36.7kg이였다. 아침 식습관태도 조사에서는 일주일에 5번 이상 아침식사를 한다(여학생 78.1%, 남학생 74.3%)는 답이 가장 많았다. 아침결식 이유는 밥맛이 없기 때문(여 58.2%, 남 54.4%)이 가장 높은 비율이었고, 편식은 여학생의 54.2%, 남학생의 48.9%가 하지 않는다고 하였으나, 편식하는 식품은 나물이나 샐러드 등의 채소류(여 51.1%, 남 61.4%)가 많았다. 간식섭취는 가끔 섭취한다는 답이 여학생 59.8%, 남학생 60.0%로 높은 비율을 나타냈다. 간식은 부모님이 사주신다(여 32.6%, 남 39.1%)고 하였으며, 여학생은 50.5%가 가족과 함께 먹고 남학생의 경우에는 44.8%가 혼자 먹는다는 결과를 보였다. 간식으로 과일섭취가 이루어지고 있는지 조사한 결과는 여학생의 33.0%가 2-3일에 2회 이상 섭취한다고 했지만, 남학생은 29.5%가 매일 먹는다고 답을 하여 과일섭취는 모두 딸이 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 패스트푸드의 이용동기는 맛이 좋아서(남 60.8% 여 55.2%), 다음은 이용이 편리하기 때문이며(남 32.4% 여 40.6%), 주로 이용하는 곳은 분식 및 편의점이었다. 패스트푸드 이용횟수는 월1-2회(남 52.4%, 여 51.6%)가 가장 많았으며, 다음이 주1회 정도(남 21.9%, 여 32.0%) 이용한다고 하였다. 이용시간은 방과 후 저녁시간을 가장 많이 이용하며(남 47.6%, 여 50.5%), 남 녀 모두 사서 집에서 먹거나(남 44.7%, 여 41.2%), 배달시켜 집에서 먹는다(남 39.8%, 여 37.1%)고 하였다. 가장 좋아하는 패스트푸드는 라면 등의 분식으로 여학생의 40.2%, 남학생의 26.2%가 해당되었고, 그 다음 순서로 남학생은 피자(22.3%)와 치킨(22.3%) 및 햄버거(18.5%), 여학생은 치킨(25.8%)과 도너츠(12.4%)를 더 선호하였다. 패스트푸드 만족도를 3점 척도로 조사한 결과, 맛이 가장 높은 점수(2.42)였으며, 가격(1.98), 위생(1.92) 서비스(2.15)는 보통으로 평가했다. 본 연구 결과, 조사 대상자들의 패스트푸드 섭취는 가끔 먹는 간식과 같은 형태로 당장 우려할 정도는 아니지만, 선행연구에서 보고된 바와 같이 10대와 20대에 특히 섭취율이 증가함을 감안할 때, 중학생이 되기 전 단계에서 우리음식의 우수성과 패스트푸드 섭취지양에 대한 교육이 필요하다고 본다.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate food involvement, dietary behavior and relationship according to the levels of nutrition knowledge. Data in this research was obtained by using the questionnaire which was given out to 528 subjects(boys 182, girls 346) in Naju city area. The awareness of dietary behavior of middle school students put the first priority on breakfast from among 3 meals a day, and they selected 'taste' as the most important criterion. The majority and above of subjects responded that they had ever delivered food at least more than 1 or 2 times a week. This research found that middle school students are tends to regard themselves as being rather close to obesity or fatness. Subjects were also aware that they have some problems with a unbalanced eating habbit and irregular timing of having meals, and more than 40% of the subjects responded that they obtain the most of information about food & dietary behavior through television. Significant difference was found in the food involvement with related variables such as sex, grade, the academic background of mother, self-perception of weight, the way of weight control, perception of problems requiring improvement. Dietary behavior related with variables showed significant difference. Variables are grade, perception of meal importance, selecting standard of food, method of weight control, improvement of eating habits. Dietary behavior is found highly relative with food involvement. Dietary behavior is found highly relative with food involvement. In conclusion, suggestions that could bring motivation to improvement is more essential to the nutrition education rather than knowledge oriented education.

A Study on the Food habits and Tastes of the Middle School Students in Taegu (대구시내 중학생들의 식습관 및 기호에 관한 조사 연구)

  • To evaluate the food habits of middle school students a survey was made by the method of questionaire on 820 middle school students consisted of 370 boys and 450 girls in Taegu city area. The results obtained are summarized as follows; Cookies, fruits, fruit juice and ice cream are their favorite eatings between meals in the decreasing order, And the eatings between meals are more frequent In girls and in the students from financially better homes and from the parents of higher education. More than half of the students have regular or irregular intake of additional vitamin tablets while about 22 percents of them skip their breakfast almost everyday. About 24% of the students hardly pay attention to the relationship between their nutritional condition and their meals. More than seventy percents of the students are taking the instant foods as one of their favorite dishes. The food intake score showed large variation($0{\sim}14$). In general the girls marked higher score than the boys. The students from financially better homes and the students from the parents of higher education marked higher scores. From the 5 scale preference test it was shown that fruits the most favored eatings of the students while the fish and crab scored the lowest mark.

Conceptual Changes of Middle School Students on the Motion of the Moon Using the Cognitive Conflict Instructional Model (인지갈등 수업모형을 적용한 중학생의 달의 운동 개념 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to classify types of preconception about the motion of the moon held by middle school students and find out how the lesson applying cognitive conflict instructional model changes their conceptual view of the motion of the moon. A quantitative study was first conducted with 48 ninth graders and then followed by a qualitative study. In the qualitative study, male and female students were organized into groups of five and ten respectively. Students were instructed to observe the motion of the moon about for a month and at the same time were taught via the cognitive conflict instructional model for three class periods. Data were collected from interviews and a questionnaire evaluating the degree of concept development that each student showed. A majority of students were found to hold misconceptions formed from elementary school programs on the motion of the moon. Further, students showed lack of scientific ability to interpret the phenomena of the moon. This study showed that the cognitive conflict instructional model was effective for students to make progress regarding their conceptual views of the motion of the moon. However, it was observed that misconceptions by students may possibly occur when two dimensional figures or miniatures were used.

The Relationship Between Subjective Health Perception and Health Behavior of Korean Adolescents According to Gender: Using the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (한국 청소년의 성별에 따른 주관적 건강 인식과 건강행위의 관계: 국민건강영양조사 제8기 조사를 이용하여)

  • Background & Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between subjective health perception and health behaviors among adolescents, utilizing raw data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2021) while distinguishing between genders. Methods: The study employed data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2020), recruiting students from 1st to 3rd grades in middle and high schools nationwide. Through population stratification, sample distribution, and sampling stages, a final sample of 1,065 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years was selected. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) at a significance level of .05. Results: Regarding the general characteristics of the subjects, no statistically significant differences were observed among male students based on school, family structure, and income. However, among female students, a significant difference in subjective health perception was noted, with higher perception among high school students compared to middle school students (p=.001). Significant differences in health behaviors were identified based on family structure for male adolescents, where those living with both parents exhibited more health-promoting behaviors than single-parent adolescents (p=.011). However, no significant difference was observed among female adolescents. In terms of health behaviors related to gender, regular exercise was found to significantly impact subjective health perception in male adolescents (p=.013), while breakfast habits were identified as significant influencers for female adolescents (p<.001). Conclusions: This study revealed gender differences in subjective health perception and health behaviors among adolescents. Based on these findings, there is a perceived need for the development of health promotion programs tailored to the unique needs of male and female adolescents.

The Monitoring of Heavy Metals in Human Bloods of Middle School Students (중학생의 혈액 중 중금속 모니터링)

  • This study was conducted to estimate the contents of heavy metals including lead, cadmium, zinc, copper as well as iron status(serum iron, total iron binding capacity, feritin etc)in blood samples of middle school students(n=300). The contents of heavy metals were determined using the GF-AAS (Graphite furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer). The microwave digestion method and dilution method were compared. The dilution method showed the better recovery and detection limit than microwave digestion method. The values of toxic metals in whloe blood of boys & girls were 3.46 & 3.05 for Pb,0.063 & 0.065 for Cd respectively (ug/dL). Also the values of trace metals in serum of boys & girls were 105.9 & 92.6 for Zn, 98.3 & 99.0 for Cu respectively (ug/dL). The prevalence of iron deficiency was $7.5\%$ in 146 boys and $14.3\%$ in 156 girls. The mean values of lead in girls were higher in iron deficiency, iron deficiency anemia and anemia groups than normal group. The mean values of lead and zinc were higher in boys compared to those in girls(P<0.05), the mean values of cadmium and copper in boys were similar to those in girls. Our results of toxic metals such as Pb & Cd showed lower to CDC's(Centers for Disease Control) blood lead levels of concern for children, 10 ug/dL.
