The shock wave and boundary layer interaction patterns in an over-expanded rocket nozzle are associated with the production of undesirable side-forces during the start-up and shut-down processes of the engine. In the present work, a computational study is carried out to investigate the effect of the transient nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) on the flow fields inside the nozzle. The unsteady, compressible, axisymmetric, Navier-Stocks equations with SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model are solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. NPR is varied from 2.0 to 10.0, in order to simulate the start-up and shut-down processes of the rocket engine. It is observed that the interaction patterns and the hysteresis phenomenon strongly depend on the time variation of NPR, leading to significantly different characteristics in the lateral forces.

Noise and vibration, which occur in a pipe, are usually caused by the interaction between the turbulent flow and nearby wall. Although it can be estimated by a simple case of expanded pipes having complex turbulent flow, the radiated noise is highly dependent upon the size, shape, and thickness of the given model. In addition, the radiated noise propagates and has serious interference and destabilization effects on the surrounding systems, which can lead to fatigue fracture and failure. This study took advantage of the variety of commercial programs, such as FLUENT (flow solver), NASTRAN (dynamic motion solver of complex structures) and VIRTUAL LAB (radiated noise solver) based on the boundary element method (BEM), to understand the underlying physics of flow noise. The expanded pipe has separation and a high pressure drop because of the abrupt change in the cross-section. Based on the radiated noise calculations, the noise level was reduced to around 20 dB in the range of 100-500 Hz.

The flow around a two-dimensional foil section Is measured by a LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) system which is capable of measuring the datailed flow field without interfering the original flow field. A 2-color 3-beam LDV system, which is capable of mea,;tiring 2 velocity components simultaneously and uses 2W Ar-Ion laser source, is used to measure the flow field around an NACA0012 foil section. The measured flow velocities are analysed iii order to study the boundary layer characteristics, flow separation and the detail structure of the flow near the trailing edge of the foil. The boundary layer characteristics are compared with the results by the head's momentum integral method. For the case of small angle of attack at relatively higher Reynolds number, both results show good agreements. The measured data of the velocity field around an NACA0012 foil section would be valuable data to validate the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) calculation results. The developed experimental technique to evaluate the characteristics of two-dimensional foil sections is essential tool to develope new blade sections which have good lift characteristics and better cavitation performances.
In the present study, effects of tree-stream turbulence and surface trip wire on the flow past a sphere at $Re\;=\;0.4\;{\times}\;10^5\;{\sim}\;2.8\;{\times}\;10^5$ are investigated through wind tunnel experiments. Various types of grids are installed upstream of the sphere in order to change the tree-stream turbulence intensity. In the case of surface trip wire, 0.5mm and 2mm trip wires are attached from $20^{\circ}\;{\sim}\;90^{\circ}$ at $10^{\circ}$ interval along the streamwise direction. To investigate the flow around a sphere, drag measurement using a load cell, surface-pressure measurement, surface visualization using oil-flow pattern and near-wall velocity measurement using an I-type hot-wire probe are conducted. In the variation of free-stream turbulence, the critical Reynolds number decreases and drag crisis occurs earlier with increasing turbulence intensity. With increasing Reynolds number, the laminar separation point moves downstream, but the reattachment point after laminar separation and the main separation point are fixed, resulting in constant drag coefficient at each free-stream turbulence intensity. At the supercritical regime, as Reynolds number is further increased, the separation bubble is regressed but the reattachment and the main separation points are fixed. In the case of surface trip wire directly disturbing the boundary layer flow, the critical Reynolds number decreases further with trip wire located more downstream. However, the drag coefficient after drag crisis remains constant irrespective of the trip location.

Using the mathematical model suggested by Bennet et al.(1992), the reflection and transmission coefficients by a circular pile breakwater has been investigated in the framework of potential theory. Flow separation due to sudden contraction and expansion is generated and is the main cause of significant energy loss. Therefore, evaluation of exact energy loss coefficient is critical to enhance the reliability of mathematical model. To obtain the energy loss coefficient, 2-dimensional turbulent flow is analyzed using the FLUENT commercial code. The energy loss coefficient can be obtained from the pressure difference between upstream and downstream. Energy loss coefficient is the function of porosity and the relation equation between them is suggested throughout the curve fitting processing. To validated the suggested relation, comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results is made for four different porosities with good agreement.
In the present study, an improved version of 4-equation low-Reynolds-number 4-equation model is proposed. The equations of the temperature variance ($k_{\theta}$) and its dissipation rate(${\varepsilon}_{\theta}$) are solved, in concert with the equations of the turbulent kinetic energy(k) and its dissipation rate(${\varepsilon}$). In the present model, the near-wall effect and the non-equilibrium effect are fully taken into consideration. The validation of the model is then applied to the turbulent flow behind a backward-facing step and the flow over a blunt body. The predicted results of the present model are compared and evaluated with the relevant experiments.

An improved version of nonlinear low-Reynolds-number k-.epsilon. model is developed. In this model, the limiting near-wall behavior and nonlinear Reynolds stress representations are incorporated. Emphasis is placed on the adoption of Ry(.iden. $k^{1}$2/y/.nu.) instead of $y^{[-10]}$ (.iden. $u_{{\tau}/y/{\nu}}$) in the low-Reynolds-number model for predicting turbulent separated and reattaching flows. The non-equilibrium effect is examined to describe recirculating flows away from the wall. The present model is validated by doing the benchmark problem of turbulent flow behind a backward-facing step. The predictions of the present model are cross-checked with the existing measurements and DNS data. The model performance is shown to be generally satisfactory.

The nonlinear low-Reynolds-number k..epsilon. model of park and Sung is extended to predict the turbulent heat transports in separated and reattaching flows. Aircraft needs an inlet duct to supply the airflow to engine face. A fighter aircraft that requires low radar observability has to hide the engine face in the fuselage to reduce the Radar Cross Section(RCS). Therefore, the flow path of the inlet duct is changed into S-shape. The performance of the aircraft engine is known to be influenced by the shape and the centerline curvature of the S-Duct. In this study, CFD analysis of the RAE M 2129 S-Duct has been performed to investigate the influence of aspect ratio of inlet geometry. The performance of the S-Duct is evaluated in terms of the distortion coefficient. To simulate the flow under adverse pressure gradient better, $k-{\omega}SST$ turbulence model is employed. The computational results are validated with the ARA experimental data. The secondary flow and the flow separation are observed for all computational cases, while the semi-circular geometry has been found to produce the best results.

The purpose of this research is to investigate how the boundary layer separation caused by a tripping wire installed in front of the flat plate affects the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, and consequently mass transfer. A naphthalene sublimation technique is used to measure the local mass transfer coefficients on the flat plate, and two boundary conditions for the developed and developing flow are considered to evaluate the effects of the flow boundary. The local mass transfer data for a flat plate with a tripping wire are compared with the data for a flat plate without a tripping wire. The variation trends of the local heat transfer coefficients for the plates with and without the tripping wire are similar to each other in the case of the developing flow, but are quite different for the developed flow. The average Sherwood number for the flat plate with a tripping wire is much higher than that without a tripping wire because of the boundary layer separation.
