  • In order to monitor the vegetation restoration in the evergreen broad-leaved forest, eighteen experimental plots including control plots were established at Wando Arboretum in 1996. Several treatments such as density control, selective cutting and warm temperate species planting were done in the experimental plots. Seven years after the restoration experiments, the important percentage of Quercus acuta showed a tendency to a higher increase in the experiment plots than control plots in Q. Acutu. Also the important percentage of Q. Acuta in Q. acute Carpinus tschonoskii community increased in the tree layer. Pinus densiflora community was increased highly in important percentage of Q. Acuta, As a whole, vegetation structure in the experiment plot showed successional stage to Q. Acutu community. In addition, important percentage of evergreen broad-leaved trees and shrubs and number of warm temperate species and basal area were increased in the experiment plots while the introduced evergreen broad-leaved trees were declined.

  • Data was collected to develop equation for predicting stemp taper for Carpinus laxiflora in Jeju Experimental Forests. The Models tested for choosing the best-fit equations were Max & Burkhart's model, Kozak's model, and Lee's model. Performance of the equations in predicting stem diameter at a specific point along a stem was evaluated with fit and validation statistics and distribution of residuals on predicted values. In result, all the three models gave slightly better values of fitting statistics. In plotting residuals against predicted diameter, Max & Burkhart's model showed underestimation in predicting small diameter and Lee's Model did the same in predicting small diameter. Based on the above analysis of the three models in predicting stem taper, Kozak's model was chosen for the best-fit stem taper equations, and its parameters were given for C. laxiflora. Kozak's model was used to develop a stem volume table of outside bark for C. laxiflora.

  • There are many island areas in Jeonnam Province and various plants are naturally grown due to their regional characteristics. Among them 217species were found to be Rare-Specialty plants in Jonnam Province. There are growing 35 species of Critically Endangered(CR), 37 species of Endangered Species(EN), 54 species of Vulnerable(VU) and 36 species of Least Concern(LC), many of which are native to islands far south or western of the sea. This report briefly describes the geographical distribution location and the state of reproduction among Rare-Specialty woody plants grown in the Warm-temperature Zone of Jeonnam Province. There are growing Michella compressa(Shinan-gun), Actinidia rufa(Wando-gun), Glochidion chodoense(Jindo-gun), Rhus ambigua(Yeosu), Wikstroemia ganpi (Goheung-gun, Yeosu) among of the 35 Critically Endangered species. • A previous record of Coleosporium phellodendri on Zanthoxylum ailanthoides in Korea by Korean researchers was regarded as C. zanthoxyli by foreign scientists without further studies. To clarify the identity of a Coleosporium species occurring on Z. ailanthoides in Korea, we examined the morphological characteristics of eight materials and analyzed the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S large subunit (LSU) rDNA regions of three representative specimens which were collected in Korea and deposited in the Mycological Herbarium at Korea University (Seoul, Korea). All specimens collected in Korea were morphologically and molecularly determined to be C. zanthoxyli. Therefore, this is the first confirmed report on the presence of C. zanthoxyli on Z. ailanthoides in Korea.

  • In this study, we developed the carbon emission factors for 4 major species of warm-temperate region in Korea, and tried to provide their carbon emissions and removals estimates using these carbon emission factors. We selected Castanopsis cuspidata, Camellia japonica, Quercus acuta and Quercus glauca as target species and derived their carbon emission factors. The basic wood density that serve as one of the carbon emission factors were 0.583 for Castanopsis cuspidata, 0.657 for Camellia japonica, 0.833 for Quercus acuta and 0.763 for Quercus glauca and their uncertainties ranged from 5.3 to 17.9%. Biomass expansion factors were calculated as well: 1.386 for Castanopsis cuspidata, 2.621 for Camellia japonica, 1.701 for Quercus acuta and 2.123 for Quercus glauca and associated uncertainties varied from 14.7 to 30.5%. Lastly root-shoot ratios for each species were also determined: 0.454 for Castanopsis cuspidata, 0.356 for Camellia japonica, 0.191 for Quercus acuta and 0.299 for Quercus glauca with the uncertainties lying within a range from 19.8 to 35.7%. These three carbon emission factors including basic wood density had the uncertainties of less than 40% recommended by FAO. Therefore the application of country-specific emission factors seemed to provide quite accurate estimates of carbon emissions and removals. The estimation of the carbon stored in the 4 species were also conducted which amounted to $186.10tCO_2/ha$ for Castanopsis cuspidata, $280.63tCO_2/ha$ for Camellia japonica, $344.04tCO_2/ha$ for Quercus acuta and $278.91tCO_2/ha$ for Quercus glauca and their annual carbon removals were $6.65tCO_2/ha/yr$, $6.25tCO_2/ha/yr$, $11.70tCO_2/ha/yr$ and $12.29tCO_2/ha/yr$, respectively. This systematic assessment of forest resources can be a reliable source of information for managing evergreen broadleaved forest in warm temperate regions and thus serve as useful data for effective decision-making to address vegetation zone shifts due to climate change.

  • Wood identification was conducted for the 8 Neolithic charcoals excavated at Giheung Nongseori Ruins through scanning electron microscopy. They were all identified as hardwood: 6 and 1 were found to be Prinus section and Cerris section of subgenus Lepidobalanus under genus Quercus, respectively, and the remaining 1 to be genus Betula. This species composition was thought to indicate the temperate to warm temperate climate region.

  • The flora of Kayasan National Park which was located at the southern part of Korea was investigated between April 30-31. August 10-14, and October 9-10. 1989. The number of vascular plants investigated in the present study was summarized as 96 families, 292 genera, 465 species, 72 varities, and 4 forms. The middle and Southern types of distribution pattern were the largest as of 9 families and 12 species. It was very interesting that the warm temperate types of species, as well as southern coast and island types of plant were introduced to this region.

  • We report an unrecorded species of Viburnum, V. japonicum (Thunb.) Sprengel, found in Gageo-do Island, a subtropical zone in Jeollanam-do Province. We named a species Foo-reun-ga-mak-sal. It is easily distinguishable from other recorded species of Viburnum by the characteristics such as exposed winter buds and indeciduous leaves with lustrous and glabrous texture.
