  • This study was carried out to investigate insect pests and their damage caused to commercial amaranth in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, Korea, during 2019-2020. A total of seven families and 18 species were identified including three species of aphids, twelve species of stink bugs, and four species of moths. Among them, five species caused significant economic damage due to a large number of occurrences; Aphis fabae, Nysius plebejus, Polymerus cognatus, Spoladea recurvalis and Spodoptera exigua. Aphids started to occur from the end of April, and showed the greatest incidence in early June. Three Nysius species occurred from mid-May and showed the maximum density in late August, and then its population decreased from the beginning of September. Two species of moth caterpillars began to occur from mid-August and damaged amaranth until mid-October. Comparing the yields between amaranth plants with and without a spray of pesticides for each pest, the yield loss of seed by aphids and stink bugs were 51.9% and 69.8%, respectively. Also, the reduction rates of leaf biomass by S. recurvalis and S. exigua were 72.5% and 36.5%, respectively.

  • Moths were collected using a 22W UV black light trap in June through September in 2005 and May, June, August and September in 2006. The study sites were Namsan (Mt. Nam), Jirisan (Mt. Jiri), Woraksan (Mt. Worak) which are part of the Korean National Long Term Ecological Research (KNLTER). There were two common forest communities, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora. The purpose of this study was to compare species diversity of the major plant feeding Lepidoptera in the two forest types at the regional KNLTER sites. We collected a total of 435 species from the KLTER sites in 2005 and 2006. Abundance of moths was highest at Woraksan (Mt. Worak) followed by Jirisan (Mt. Jiri). The Namsan (Mt. Nam) site had the lowest, with five families (Arctiidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, and Pyralidae). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant differences at sampling date in species abundance as a response variable and at site in species richness as another response variable. Although we expected a distinct cluster with the forest type at each study site, one of ordination analyses, nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS), showed distinct clusters with the moth assemblages at each site only but NMS did not show any distinct cluster with the different forest types at each site as we expected.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the pest species and their damage on Asparagus officinalis. Field surveys were conducted in asparagus greenhouse in Jeju, for four years from 2007 to 2010. Total of 16 pest species belonging to 5 orders were found as follows: Thrips tabaci, Thrips hawaiiensis, Adoxophyes honmai, Spodoptera litura, Spodoptera exigua, Helicoverpa armigera, Mamestra brassicae, Ascotis selenaria, Ectropis excellens, Geisha distinctissima, Aphis gossypii, Myzus persicae, Anomala albopilosa, Crioceris quatuordecimpunctata, Acusta despecta sieboldiana and Deroceras reticulatum. Among them, T. tabaci frequently occurred and damaged asparagus plants during the whole growing seasons. C. quatuordecimpunctata and snails caused severe damages on asparagus shoots in spring harvest season. In mid-late seasons, aphids and lepidopteran species occurred and attacked asparagus plants. Of the lepidopteran pests, S. litura, S exigua and H. armigera belonging to Noctuidae occurred moderately and fed on asparagus plants. And the pest control strategy in asparagus cultivation was discussed based on the present results.

  • Clearwing moths (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) are economically important pests of fruit trees, such as apple, peach, and grape in Korea. Larvae feed on the phloem and cambium within tree branches of host plants. In this study, the seasonal fluctuation in male catches of four clearwing moths, Synanthedon haitangvora, S. bicingulata, Nokona regalis, and Glossosphecia romanovi, were monitored with the respective sex pheromone traps in Suwon for three years. In apple orchards, S. haitangvora males were captured from May to October, with two peaks in early June to middle June and late August to early September. Similarly, S. bicingulata males were trapped from May to October, with two peaks in late May and late August to middle September in peach orchards. In vineyards, N. regalis males were captured from late May to middle June with one peak in late May to early June, while G. romanovi males were trapped from early June to late July with one peak in late June to early July.

  • Turfgrass insect pests were investigated in different turf sod production areas of Korea. Twelve insect pest species of 7 families in 6 orders and one Eriophyidae mite, Aceria zoysiae were collected from turf sod production areas. The zoysiagrass mite was most frequently occurred zoysiagrass sod production areas. Damaged rate by zoysiagrass mite was increased from May to September. Noctuidae (Spodoptera depravata, Agrotis ipsilon and A. segetum) and Pyralidae (Crambus sp.) insect pests in Lepidoptera were attracted in A. ipsilon sex pheromone trap. Eggs and larva of A. ipsilon was the highest occurred August. Zoysiagrass mite and A. ipsilon were main insect pests in turf sod production areas in Korea.
