The effects of an addition of CNT on the sensing properties of nano ZnO:CNT-based gas sensors were studied for $H_2S$ gas. The nano ZnO sensing materials were grown by a hydrothermal reaction method. The nano ZnO:CNT was prepared by ball-milling method. The weight range of the CNT addition on the ZnO surface was from 0 to 10%. The nano ZnO:CNT gas sensors were fabricated by a screen-printing method on alumina substrates. The structural and morphological properties of the ZnO:CNT sensing materials were investigated by XRD, EDS, and SEM. The XRD patterns revealed that nano ZnO:CNT powders with a wurtzite structure were grown with (1 0 0), (0 0 2), and (1 0 1) dominant peaks. The size of the ZnO was about 210 nm, as confirmed by SEM images. The sensitivity of the nano ZnO:CNT-based sensors was measured for 5 ppm of $H_2S$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases.
In this research, fine-structure TiO2 bulks were fabricated in a combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering and their densification behavior was investigated. The obtained density of $TiO_2$ bulk prepared via the combined processes increased as the MPC pressure increased from 0.3 to 0.7 GPa. Relatively higher density (88%) in the MPCed specimen at 0.7 GPa was attributed to the decrease of the inter-particle distance of the pre-compacted component. High pressure and rapid compaction using magnetic pulsed compaction reduced the shrinkage rate (about 10% in this case) of the sintered bulks compared to general processing (about 20%). The mixing conditions of PVA, water, and $TiO_2$ nano powder for the compaction of $TiO_2$ nano powder did not affect the density and shrinkage of the sintered bulks due to the high pressure of the MPC.
SnO nanosheets were prepared at room temperature through a reaction between an aqueous solution of $SnCl_2$, $N_2F_4$, and NaOH and were converted into $SnO_2$ nanosheets without a morphological change. The SnO nanosheets were formed through a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. Uniform and well-dispersed SnO nanosheets with the round-shape morphology were attained when the solution was treated by ultrasonic sound immediately after the addition of NaOH. The $SnO_2$ nanosheets prepared by means of solution reduction under the ultrasonic treatment, and subsequent oxidation at $600^{\circ}C$ showed a high level of gas sensitivity to $C_2H_5OH$ and $CH_3COCH_3$.
[ $SiO_2$ ]thin films containing Si-nanocrystals and $Er^{3+}$ were fabricated by the RF-sputtering method. Intense emission of $Er^{3+}$ was observed at 1530 nm region after the annealing of the film at $1050^{circ}C$ for 5 min. Channel waveguides were fabricated using such films for the core. The films containing Si higher than 2.4 at% exhibited the change in stress from compression to tension after annealing, which induced the fatal loss-increase in waveguide. The optical gain might be attained by the Er-doped waveguide with Si lower than 2.4 at% by a visible-light-excitation.
Pt-loaded carbon black for the catalyst of a PEM fuel cell was synthesized with different molar ratios of polyvinylpyrrolidone and $H_2PtCl_6$ solution to improve the dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on carbon black and decrease the size of Pt nanoparticles. From transmission electron microscopy results, Pt nanoparticles of a size of approximately 2 nm were highly dispersed when the polyvinylpyrrolidone concentration was 10mM. The electrochemical activity of the synthesized Pt/C catalysts was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, showing that the as-synthesized Pt-loaded carbon black catalyst had the best activity at a polyvinylpyrrolidone concentration of 10 mM.
A simple thermal oxidation of Cu thin films deposited on planar substrates established a growth of vertically aligned copper oxide (CuO) nanorods. DC sputter-deposited Cu thin films with various thicknesses were oxidized in environments of various oxygen partial pressures to control the kinetics of oxidation. This is a method to synthesize vertically aligned CuO nanorods in a relatively shorter time and at a lower cost than those of other methods such as the popular hydrothermal synthesis. Also, this is a method that does not require a catalyst to synthesize CuO nanorods. The grown CuO nanorods had diameters of ~100 nm and lengths of $1{\sim}25{\mu}m$. We examined the morphology of the synthesized CuO nanorods as a function of the thickness of the Cu films, the gas environment, the oxidation time, the oxidation temperature, the oxygen gas flow rate, etc. The parameters all influence the kinetics of the oxidation, and consequently, the volume expansion in the films. Patterned growth was also carried out to confirm the hypothesis of the CuO nanorod protrusion and growth mechanism. It was found that the compressive stress built up in the Cu film while oxygen molecules incorporated into the film drove CuO nanorods out of the film.
Highly optical transparent photoelectric devices were realized by using a transparent metal-oxide semiconductor heterojunction of p-type NiO and n-type ZnO. A functional template of ITO nanowires (NWs) was applied to this transparent heterojunction device to enlarge the light-reactive surface. The ITO NWs/n-ZnO/p-NiO heterojunction device provided a significant high rectification ratio of 275 with a considerably low reverse saturation current of 0.2 nA. The optical transparency was about 80% for visible wavelengths, however showed an excellent blocking UV light. The nanostructured transparent heterojunction devices were applied for UV photodetectors to show ultra fast photoresponses with a rise time of 8.3 mS and a fall time of 20 ms, respectively. We suggest this transparent and super-performing UV responser can practically applied in transparent electronics and smart window applications.
We report numerical simulations to investigate of the dependendce of the on/off current ratio and channel charge distributions in silicon nanowire (SiNW) field-effect transistors (FETs) on the channel width and thicknesses. In order to investigate the transport behavior in devices with different channel geometries, we have performed detailed two-dimensional simulations of SiNWFETs and control FETs with a fixed channel length L of $10\;{\mu}m$, but varying the channel width W from 5 nm to $5\;{\mu}m$, and thickness t from 10 nm to 30 nm. We have show that $Q_{ON}/Q_{OFF}$ drastically decreases (from $^{\sim}2.9{\times}10^4$ to $^{\sim}9.8{\times}10^3$) as the channel thickness increases (from 10 nm to 30 nm). As a result of the simulation using a quantum model, even higher charge density in the bottom of SiNW channel was observed then in the bottom of control channel.
In this research, nanocomposite layers consisting of poly (3,4,-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS) and CuO nanoparticles were investigated as hole transport layers in organic solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the electron donor and (6.6) phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the electron acceptor. The addition of CuO nanoparticles to PEDOT:PSS layer improved the solar cell performance with 0.5% CuO nanoparticle concentration. At optimized concentration, CuO mixed PEDOT:PSS films had good electrical ($4.131{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) and optical (transmittance > 90%) properties for using hole transporting layer. We investigated that improved solar cell performance with CuO nanoparticles mixed PEDOT:PSS films.
