The technique of producing thin film plays a crucial role in modern science and technology as well as in industrial purposes. Numerous efforts have been made to get high quality thin film through surface treatment of materials. PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) are two of the most popular deposition techniques used in both scientific study and industrial use. It is well known that the film deposited by PVD and CVD commonly possesses a columnar microstructure which affects many film properties. In recent years, various types of deposition sources which feature high material uses and excellent film properties have been developed. Electromagnetic levitation source appeared as an alternative deposition source to realize high deposition rate for industrial use. Complex film structures such as nano multilayer and multi-components have been prepared to achieve better film properties. Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) has also been developed as a technique to engineer the columnar structure of thin films on the micro- and nanoscale. In this paper, the trends and major issues of thin film technology based on PVD and CVD have been discussed together with the prospect of thin film technology.

In this study, the influence of silicon contents on the microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were systematically investigated for application of cutting tools. The composition of the Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were controlled by different combinations of TiAl2 and Ti4Si composite target powers using an arc ion plating technique in a reactive gas mixture of high purity Ar and N2 during depositions. Ti-Al-Si-N films were nanocomposite consisting of nanosized (Ti,Al,Si)N crystallites embedded in an amorphous Si3N4/SiO2 matrix. The instrumental analyses revealed that the synthesized Ti-Al-Si-N film with Si content of 5.63 at.% was a nanocomposites consisting of nano-sized crystallites (5-7 nm in dia.) and a three dimensional thin layer of amorphous Si3N4 phase. The hardness of the Ti-Al-Si-N coatings also exhibited the maximum hardness value of about 47 GPa at a silicon content of ~5.63 at.% due to the microstructural change to a nanocomposite as well as the solid-solution hardening. The coating has a low friction coefficient of 0.55 at room temperature against an Inconel alloy ball. These excellent mechanical and tribological properties of the Ti-Al-Si-N coatings could help to improve the performance of machining and cutting tool applications.

In this study, cotton fabrics were coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(3-MPTMS), which is highly reactive to cotton fabrics, as a medium, and the characteristics, antimicrobial properties, and photodegradation properties of the fibers were measured. The manufacturing process is as follows. (1) 3-MPTMS was added to isopropanol, and $TiO_2$ colloid was added to the mixture to prepare a solution. (2) Cellulose fibers were immersed in the prepared $3-MPTMS/TiO_2$ solution, stirred for 90 minutes at $45^{\circ}C$ in a constant temperature water bath, and dried thereafter. In order to identify the morphology of the cellulose fibers coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles, the surface was observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM), and SEM-EDS was measured to identify the adhesion of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The SEM images showed $TiO_2$ nanoparticle and 3-MPTMS coated layers on the fibers and it was identified that $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were attached to the cellulose fibers. The antimicrobial activity of $3-MPTMS/TiO_2$-treated cotton fabrics was measured using a bacterial reduction method. $3-MPTMS/TiO_2$ cellulose fibers which was irradiated by ultra violet light, showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli(ATCC 43895) and Staphylococcus aureus(ATCCBAA-1707) unlike unirradiated fibers. The cellulose fibers were stained with methylene blue and the photodegradation performance of the stained fabrics was analyzed. The stained fabrics showed high degradation performance with photolytic reactions of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles.
During a long-term operation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs), the fuel cell performance may degrade due to severe agglomeration and dissolution of metal nanoparticles in the cathode. To enhance the electrochemical durability of metal catalysts and to prevent the particle agglomeration in PEMFC operation, this paper proposes a hybrid catalyst structure composed of PtCo alloy nanoparticles encapsulated by porous carbon layers. In the hybrid catalyst structure, the dissolution and migration of PtCo nanoparticles can be effectively prevented by protective carbon shells. In addition, $O_2$ can properly penetrate the porous carbon layers and react on the active Pt surface, which ensures high catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. Although the hybrid catalyst has a much smaller active surface area due to the carbon encapsulation compared to a commercial Pt catalyst without a carbon layer, it has a much higher specific activity and significantly improved durability than the Pt catalyst. Therefore, it is expected that the designed hybrid catalyst concept will provide an interesting strategy for development of high-performance fuel cell catalysts.

The structural change of DLC coatings during long-term wear test and dicing test under the low loading condition was investigated. DLC coatings were applied for the precision injection molds of a modified SNCM steel for the extension of life and the micro-diamond blades for the high cutting efficiency and the increase in life. A ball-on-disc wear tests in the mold steel and a dicing tests in the micro-diamond blades were conducted to understand degradation of DLC coatings. The degradation of DLC coatings for the injection mold steel and the micro-diamond blades during the wear and dicing tests were studied with Raman Spectroscopy. Raman peaks were divided two bands(D band and G band) to study the degradation process of DLC structure. By the wear test, polished condition of wear marks were observed to be maintained until 10 hrs of wear test period is given, but small striation marks appeared in 20 hours wear test. It was observed that $I_D/I_G$ ratios changed as the degradation of DLC coatings is proceeded during the wear tests and the dicing tests. It is suggested that the change in $I_D/I_G$ value possibly reflected from the composition of $sp^2$ and $sp^3$ bondings in DLC layers relevant to the change in mechanical and physical property.

This study investigates Ag coated $Cu_2O$ nanoparticles that are produced with a changing molar ratio of Ag and $Cu_2O$. The results of XRD analysis reveal that each nanoparticle has a diffraction pattern peculiar to Ag and $Cu_2O$ determination, and SEM image analysis confirms that Ag is partially coated on the surface of $Cu_2O$ nanoparticles. The conductive paste with Ag coated $Cu_2O$ nanoparticles approaches the specific resistance of $6.4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ for silver paste(SP) as $(Ag)/(Cu_2O)$ the molar ratio increases. The paste(containing 70 % content and average a 100 nm particle size for the silver nanoparticles) for commercial use for mounting with a fine line width of $100{\mu}m$ or less has a surface resistance of 5 to $20{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, while in this research an Ag coated $Cu_2O$ paste has a larger surface resistance, which is disadvantageous. Its performance deteriorates as a material required for application of a fine line width electrode for a touch panel. A touch panel module that utilizes a nano imprinting technique of $10{\mu}m$ or less is expected to be used as an electrode material for electric and electronic parts where large precision(mounting with fine line width) is not required.

Here, we report the development of a new and low-cost core-shell structure for lithium-ion battery anodes using silicon waste sludge and the Ti-ion complex. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the raw waste silicon sludge powder to be pure silicon without other metal impurities and the particle size distribution is measured to be from 200 nm to 3 ㎛ by dynamic light scattering (DLS). As a result of pulverization by a planetary mill, the size of the single crystal according to the Scherrer formula is calculated to be 12.1 nm, but the average particle size of the agglomerate is measured to be 123.6 nm. A Si/TiO2 core-shell structure is formed using simple Ti complex ions, and the ratio of TiO2 peaks increased with an increase in the amount of Ti ions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed that TiO2 coating on Si nanoparticles results in a Si-TiO2 core-shell structure. This result is expected to improve the stability and cycle of lithium-ion batteries as anodes.
While in the process of electroless plating of dendrite-shape copper with silver, various silver-coated copper (Ag@Cu) particles were prepared by using both displacement plating and reducing electroless plating. The physicochemical properties of Ag@Cu particles were analyzed by scanning electron microscope- energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), and it was confirmed that the silver coated by the reducing electroless plating was formed as nano-particles on the copper surface. Ag@Cu particles were compounded with an epoxy resin to prepare a conductive film, and its thermal stability was evaluated. We investigated the effect of the difference between the displacement plating and reducing electroless plating on the initial resistance and thermal stability of conductive films.
Membrane can selectively separate various substances such as organic substances, liquids, solutes, vapors, gases, ions or electrons according to the separation technology and various uses. Membranes are largely divided into symmetric membranes and asymmetric membranes, and classified into porous and nonporous structure depending on the presence or absence of pores. Also, the interface of the membrane may be molecularly uniform, or chemically or physically non-uniform. Preparation techniques include melt extrusion, stretching, template leaching, track-etching, solution casting, phase inversion, and solution coating method. The prepared membrane can be applied to various applications such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, gas separation and energy fields. This review provides a tutorial on how to prepare membranes according to the classification and types.
It is very important to secure the adhesion durability between the base film and the conductive paste for the development of a sensor for detecting hazardous chemicals. In this study, an ester binder was used to improve the adhesive properties which can be a problem when applying the sensor to the cross cut 0B or 1B grade. This problem was found while evaluating the adhesive properties by coating the polyaniline/graphene nano plate (GNP) paste on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film. When 10 wt% or more of the ester-based binder was added, the cross cut grade to which the sensor can be applied was 3B or higher. It was confirmed that the excessive addition of the binder may affect the electrical properties of the conductive paste and actually decrease the reactivity to sulfuric acid. To improve the electrical property, a carbon black (CB) content was varied resulting in the optimum electrical property observed at 2 wt% of CB.
