In this study, we studied a facile method for the synthesis of stable and nearly spherical gold nanoparticles using a tyrosine-rich peptide, Tyr-Tyr-Gly-Tyr-Tyr (YYGYY), as both the reducing and capping agent. The peptide coated spherical and polycrystalline gold nanoparticles with diameters from 3 to 15 nm were successfully synthesized by varying the concentration of the peptide and metal precursor under UV irradiation. The nanoparticles were then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Furthermore, the catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles was confirmed by the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, in which the catalytic reaction rate constant was 7.3 × 10-3 s-1.

We demonstrate that trasition metal catalyst nanoparticle (NP) attached to carbon nitride nanotubes (CNNTs) show selective catalytic activities on hydrogen generation from the water solution including chemical hydride negative ions. The natural bonding orbitals (NBO) obtained from the first-principle calculations shows that the catalysts attached on CNNTs are quite differently polarized when they play for hydrogen generation from chemical hydride ions and hydrogen of water. For Co and Ni nanoparticles attached on CNNTs, their charges are more positively polarized when they interact with $BH_4^-Na^+$ and $H_2O$ while Pt atoms are less positively charged. In this matter, the increased positive charges on catlyst nanoparticles are proven to be more efficient in attracting hydride negative ions, thus improving hydrogen generate rates. Consequently, this result implies that these different charge polarization leads to selective catalytic activities of NPs-CNNTs. In the hydrogen generation experiments, Co-CNNTs shows the highest hydrogen generation rate when the similar amounts of catalyst nanoparticles (Co, Ni, and Pt) are dispersed on the sidewalls of CNNTs.
An AlGaN/GaN heterojunction-based hydrogen sensor with SnO2 nanoparticles/Pd catalyst layer was fabricated for room-temperature hydrogen detection. The fabricated sensor exhibited unstable drift in standby current when it was operated at room temperature. The instability in the sensing signal was dramatically improved when the sensor was operated under UV illumination.
Photoelectrochemical water splitting has been considered as the most promising technology for generating hydrogen energy. Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) compounds have currently attracted tremendous attention due to their outstanding ability towards the catalytic water-splitting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report the synthesis method of various transition metal dichalcogenide including MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2 nanosheets as excellent catalysts for solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen evolution. Photocathodes were fabricated by growing the nanosheets directly onto Si nanowire (NW) arrays, with a thickness of 20 nm. The metal ion layers were formed by soaking the metal chloride ethanol solution and subsequent sulfurization or selenization produced the transition metal chalcogenide. They all exhibit excellent PEC performance in 0.5 M H2SO4; the photocurrent reaches to 20 mA cm-2 (at 0 V vs. RHE) and the onset potential is 0.2 V under AM1.5 condition. The quantum efficiency of hydrogen generation is avg. 90%. The stability of MoS2 and MoSe2 is 90% for 3h, which is higher than that (80%) of WS2 and WSe2. Detailed structure analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for before/after HER reveals that the Si-WS2 and Si-WSe2 experience more oxidation of Si NWs than Si-MoS2 and Si-MoSe2. This can be explained by the less protection of Si NW surface by their flake shape morphology. The high catalytic activity of TMDs should be the main cause of this enhanced PEC performance, promising efficient water-splitting Si-based PEC cells.

This study is to increase the surface area and maximize the effect of the catalyst by coating a nanometersized metal catalyst material on the anode layer using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. ALD process is known to produce uniform films with well-controlled thickness at the atomic level on substrates. We measured the performance by coating metals (Ni) on Ni/YSZ, which is the most widely known anode material for solid oxide fuel cells. ALD coatings began to show a decrease in cell performance over 3 nm coatings.
Cyclohexanone is important intermediate for the manufacture of caprolactam which is monomer of nylron. Cyclohexanone is generally produced by dehydrogenation reaction of cyclohexanol. In this study, highly mesoporous metal oxides such as meso-$WO_3$, meso-$TiO_2$, meso-$Fe_2O_3$, meso-CuO, meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-NiO were synthesized using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template via nano-replication method for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol. The overall conversion of cyclohexanol followed a general order: meso-$WO_3$ >> meso-$Fe_2O_3$ > meso-$SnO_2$ > meso-$TiO_2$ > meso-NiO > meso-CuO. In particular, meso-$WO_3$ significantly showed higher activity than the other mesoporous metal oxides. Therefore, the meso-$WO_3$ has wide range of application possibilities for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol.
