They are well-known geometric properties of a circle that the perpendicular bisector of a chord passes through the center of a circle, and the intersection of the perpendicular bisectors of any two chords is its center. This paper is related to a fast pupil detection method capable of detecting the center and the radius of a pupil using these geometric properties at high speed when detecting the pupil region for iris segmentation. The proposed method is characterized as rapidly detecting the center and the radius of the pupil, extracting the candidate points of the circle in human eye images using morphological operations, and finding two chords using four points on the circular edge, and taking the intersection of the perpendicular bisectors of these two chords for its center. The proposed method can not only detect the center and the radius of a pupil rapidly but also find partially occluded pupils in human eye images.
They are used as a symbol representing some meaning of an object. Geometric patterns in the formative arts have been recasted by artists and used to express modern images. Simple shapes of geometric patterns create beauty with their outward appearance and decorated patterns. The simpleness of decorated patterns go with restrained, rational, and modern concepts. The patterns decorated with geometric patterns use geometric figures such as octagon, triangle, quadrangle, etc. and they give satisfaction to modern people. They are also regular and simple, so they can create impactive visual effects and three-dimensional space can be created with these dynamic patterns. Therefore, attractiveness of shape which gives enjoyment is also found in tableware design using geometric patterns. Using geometric patterns in tableware design is not based on a chance factor, so it is possible to objectify and reproduce the patterns. These repetitive designs can influence a lot of designers working on tableware and help improve the tableware designs. It is also considered that those designs are able to create new opportunities to produce a high value product in the ceramics industry.

Horizontally curved bridges are subjected to torsional loads by their vertical dead loads only as well as eccentric loads, which cause negative reactions at supports. In this paper, effects of bridge curvature on vertical reactions at supports are investigated for 48.8 m length simple span steel box girder bridges with elastomeric bearings by varying curvature angle from 0.49 to 1.35 rad. In order to expect magnitude and direction of reactions including possibility of negative reactions, reaction evaluation equations have been analytically developed by separating a superstructure of curved bridge into independent components. Concrete slabs and bottom flanges in steel box section are assumed geometrical annular sectors in area dimension, and top flanges and webs that have very narrow projected areas are assumed geometrical arcs in line dimension. Proposed equations have relatively simple forms and prediction values are on very good agreement with those from finite element analyses by difference of 1% order.
The Yellow-Sand phenomena occurred during the period from l0C to 14C in Korea have been investigated using the historical record of the Koryosa. It is written as the "dust rain"or "mud" which means the falling down of dust from the sky. The authors have extracted 50 historical writings of dust rain from the Koryosa. The results show that the observation records concerning Yellow-Sand phenomenon for the period of Korea Dynasty (918~1392) are described with the scientific accuracy for the Yellow-Sand phenomena as the pure dust phenomena, the mixture of Yellow Sand with snow or rain, and the Yellow-Sand associated with fog or hail, etc. It is also found that the occurrence of Yellow-Sand phenomena was the incomprehensible natural phenomena such as Yellow-Sand were interpreted as a warning from the Heaven to the king and people of their fail in moral principles.in moral principles.
The growth of Daphniphyllum macropodum at Mt. Naejang National Park(Naejang temple area) was investigated in connection with the climatic factors by the use of tree-ring analysis. A pair of cores was extracted from each of 18 trees in the D. macropodum community area near Younjabong for the analysis. The period of mater chronology based upon D. macropodum covers from 1915 to 1998. The growth rates of D. macropodum were very poor in the years 1920, 1932, 1934, 1937, 1942, 1946, 1964, 1969 and 1985, respectively. Response function was employed to understand the relationship between the growth of D. macropodum and climatic factors. The response function of the growth rates of D. macropodum indicated significant negative correlation with the precipitation of August and September. Poor growth of D. macropodum during the August and September nay be due to the frequent rain periods during the summer The heavy rain during the summer seems to decrease the solar radiation, which eventually caused the decrease of photosynthesis capacity. In conclusion, we hypothesize that the decrease of the photosynthesis rates during the rainy summer seasons may cause the slower growth of D. macropodum.

A simulation model was used to examine the effects of climate variation on the tree-ring structure of Larix leptolepis trees growing at a plantation plot in Worak National Park in central Korea. The model uses mathematical equations to simulate processes affecting cell(tracheid) size variations for individual rings using daily precipitation and temperature measurements. Limiting conditions are estimated from temperature, day length and a calculated water balance. The results indicate that the seasonal growth is mostly limited by the soil moisture content and precipitation income during April and May. The April-May temperature also inversely influences the growth by increasing water losses from soil. The global climate-change scenario which includes regional warming(increasing temperature in spring-summer periods) appears to decrease the duration of optimal growths. Consequently, the model estimated that Larix leptolepis would lose the total production of xylem by 25%.
28 direction of the past Korean geomagnetic field were determined by archaeomagnetic measurements of 734 oriented samples, collected from baked earths of remains in the southern Korea. These data cover periods of A.D. 39C, A.D. 1317 and A.D. 15-l6C. It is noted that Korean geomagnetic field data in 5-6C arc similar to those of contemporary Japanese geomagnetic field, but Korean geomagnetic field data in A.D. 3-4C deflect more easterly than contemporary Japanese geomagnetic field. The observed large difference of geomagnetic field direction between Korea and Japan suggests the existence of a prominent local geomagnetic anomaly in the vicinity of Japan and Korea in the period of A.D. 3-4C. An approximate figure of Korean archaeomagnetic secular curve for the periods of A.D. 3-6C and A.D. 7-9C was obtained. This curve is sure to be helpful for Korean archaeology to data the last firing of baked earths accompanied with no relics.
In this paper, the writer attempts to clarify causes by general man and weather factor on forest fire occurrence in Kosong-Area, 1995-2001. The major results are summarized as follows: The forest fire at Kojin-ri, Sonyusil-ri and Majwa-ri occurred at the same area over 3 times and that Hakya-ri, Songdae-ri and Inhung-ri, at the adjoining land over 3times. In the total 46 times of forest fire, fire frequence was greatest in March(11 time) and April(11 time) followed by November(7 time), January(6 time), February(6 time). December(3 time), October(2 time). Hours on frequent forest fire are from 11:00 till 18:00. Number for forest fire occurrence by causes was greatest in military training followed by burning paddy fields, debris burning, burning agricultural debris, visiting a grave, cigarette and arson. Frequent forest fire in Kosong-Area coincide not only with above normal temperatures, but also with below normal relative humidity. When the strong winds appear at Kosong-Area, the properties of daily surface chart re the south high and north low pressure pattern in the Far East Asia.
One short core with length of 146cm(HB-107, at coordinates of $N51^{\circ}$11'37.5";$E100^{\circ}$24'45.6", from 229m water depth was subject of the present study. The sub-samples of the core were analyzed for the water contents (WC%), biogenic silica, identification of the main phases, grain size distribution, geochemistry and some physical properties of sediment(Wet density and Magnetic susceptibility) with aims of recording palaeo-environmental changes in Northem Mongolia. The evaluation of the geochemical and mineralogical proxies on palaeo-climated and palaeo-environmental changes are based on comparison to the behvior of biogenic silica through core, as later one had been showed itself, as good indicator of the climate and environmental fluctuation. Age model of the investigating core based on previously C 14 dated core HB105 taken from the central part of the Hobsgol Lake and the result had been published elsewhere. The core consists of two litological varieties : upper diatomaceous silt, lower clay. According to the age model the upper diatomaceous silt formed during the Holocene, lower caly-during the late Pleistocene glacial period. The geochemistry and phase identification analysis on the core samples are resulted in determining main minerals that form the bottom sediments and their geochemistry. The main include quartz, felspar, muscovite, clinochlore, amphibole and carbonate phase(dolomite and calcite). Through the core not only occur the relative quantitative changes of the main phases, but also happen that the carbonate phase completely disappear in diatomaceous silt. This is believed to be related to the lake water salinity changes, which occurred during the trassition period from Pleistocene glacial-to the Holocene interglacial. These abrupt changes of the mineralogy have been clearly traced in geochemistry of sediments, specially in calcium concentration, which is high in lower clay and low in upper diatomaceous silt. That means, geochemistry and mineralogy of the bottom sediments can be used as proxy data on palaeo-climate and palaeo-environmental changes.

In South Korea a Pedo-sedimentary Sequence(PS) indicating the Last Glacial Maximun(LGM) is typified y a brown to dark brown, relatively stiff paleosol layers formed by repetitive freezing and thawing processes which in turn left characteristi glossic textures in soil-solum, polygolnal structures with a flagipans, vertical soil wedges or freezing cracks, and horizontal foliations, As a pre-LGM sedimentary sequences (older than 25Ka), the Old Fluvial Sequence(OFS) overlain by the Slope Sedimentary Sequence(SS) are distributed commonly at the base level higher than 14-15m above present river-bed along the major river basin. After the LGM (ca. 18Ka), the Young Fluvial Sequence(YFS) appears at an altitude ascending order of sedimentary profiles. In this fluvial organic muds of Jangheungri site(Jinju), Sorori site(Cheonwon), and Youngsan estruarine rivermouth(Mokpo) were exemplified in order to interpret their formation ages and environments. As result of $^{14}C$ datings, the formation ages of te organic muds are Boelling to Alleroed (MIS-1). These organic muds were fomed in fluvial backswamp or local pond/bog in response to shifting fluvial system. On the basis of palynological production dominant with Abies/Picea-Betula and Ranunculaceae, Compositae, Cyperaceae, and Graminae, it was interpreted that more boreal to subboreal condition was prevailed rather than temperate like today during the formation of organic muds and soil moisture condition was a repetition of wet and dry condition.
