Since the end of the Cold War in the 1990s, European countries have cut defense costs and reduced armaments as an era of peace without large-scale wars continues, and as a result, the West's defense industry base has gradually weakened. On the other hand, South Korea, the world's only divided country, was able to achieve high growth in the defense industry as a result of continuous arms strengthening in the face of North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. With the rapid increase in demand for conventional weapons systems and changes in the structure of the global defense market due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Korea's weapons system drew great attention as a large-scale defense export contract with Poland was signed in 2022. In 2023, K-Defense ranked ninth in the world's arms exports and aims to become the world's fourth-largest defense exporter by 2027. Therefore, this study analyzed the case of Korea-Poland defense exports to derive problems, and presented development strategies related to export revitalization of K-Defense, a national strategic industry. In order for the defense industry to become Korea's next growth engine, it is necessary to establish a defense organization, prepare government-level measures to protect defense industry technology, and expand military and security cooperation with allies linked to defense exports.

Rural life improvement programs (RLIPs) have been implemented with a central goal of improving the quality of rural life and promoting rural welfare and cultural life. However, different factors may influence the effect of rural life improvement programs on rural communities or households. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of perceived effects of RLIPs on quality of life of rural women in South Korea. We used a mixed research design to generate data for this study. We collected survey data from 311 rural women who participated in the RLIPs and also conducted a focus group discussion. We analyzed the quantitative data using descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression to identify the variables that predicted effects of RLIPs on quality of life of rural women. Our study finds that age, type of residence in the community, leadership experience, level of education, community satisfaction and community participation influenced respondents' perceived effects of RLIPs. The results imply that the benefits of a development intervention could not be uniformly reaped by residents of a community.

The purpose of this study is to analyze domestic academic library development plans, check whether key components are reflected, and seek ways to improve the establishment of academic library development plans. To this end, a rubric evaluation technique derived from research related to evaluation of foreign universities and libraries was used. The libraries of the top 15 domestic universities were selected by referring to the QS World University Evaluation and THE World University Evaluation as the subjects of the study, and how much the core components of the development plan were reflected were evaluated. The results of the study are as follows. First, as a result of evaluating the university library development plan, most of the contents of 'purpose', 'goal', and 'action plan' were reflected, but vulnerabilities were found in 'mission' and 'vision'. Second, some private academic libraries were moving toward strategic planning at the level of advanced countries, including all of the core components. Third, although most academic libraries specified 'purpose', it showed limitations due to perfunctory description and connection. In the comprehensive evaluation, out of the highest score of 15, 12 were good and 3 were poor, indicating that the development plans of domestic academic libraries were generally at a 'good' level. As an improvement measure, it was suggested to form a task force for development plan establishment, to disclose and promote development plans, and to strengthen education on development plans for librarians.
This study examines the effect of R&D investment on firm performance and value of Chinese private firms. Through R&D investment, firms aim to acquire knowledge and technological resources to create innovation and competitive advantage, which ultimately enhances firm performance and value. However, unlike other investments, R&D investments are characterized by high adjustment costs and risks, uncertainty and asymmetric information. In addition, the effect of R&D investment on firm performance and value has been shown to be mixed results due to various internal and external contextual factors. Therefore, this study intends to consider how the ESG activities of firms, which have recently attracted attention, act as a contextual factor in the results of R&D investment. This is because interaction with stakeholders through ESG activities is considered to be an important factor in securing competitive advantages and sustainable growth. In this context, this study measures the effect of a firm's R&D investment on its business performance by dividing it into financial performance and value, respectively, and examines the moderating effect of ESG score on the relationship. Based on empirical analysis of all Chinese private firms from 2010 to 2019, the results show that a firm's R&D investment has a negative impact on performance and a positive impact on value. Furthermore, a high ESG score of private firms positively moderates each relationship, emphasizing the importance of ESG activities.
Globally, drug side effects rank among the top causes of death. To effectively respond to these adverse drug reactions, a shift towards an active real-time monitoring system, along with the standardization and quality improvement of data, is necessary. Integrating individual institutional data and utilizing large-scale data to enhance the accuracy of drug side effect predictions is critical. However, data sharing between institutions poses privacy concerns and involves varying data standards. To address this issue, our research adopts a federated learning approach, where data is not shared directly in compliance with privacy regulations, but rather the results of the model's learning are shared. We employ the Common Data Model (CDM) to standardize different data formats, ensuring accuracy and consistency of data. Additionally, we propose a drug monitoring system that enhances security and scalability management through a cloud-based federated learning environment. This system allows for effective monitoring and prediction of drug side effects while protecting the privacy of data shared between hospitals. The goal is to reduce mortality due to drug side effects and cut medical costs, exploring various technical approaches and methodologies to achieve this.
This study investigates the depiction of new religions in the public sphere, with a specific focus on their representation within the national curriculum in Korea. To pinpoint particular phenomena, an analysis of the national curriculum revisions and textbooks related to religions centered around Daesoon Jinrihoe (大巡眞理會) was conducted. Through this examination, this study introduces Korean new religions as a novel topic for religious education research in secondary schools. Simultaneously, it assesses whether the educational objectives align with the intended goal of providing an objective liberal arts education. The recent direction in revising religious education and related curriculum aims to avoid promoting adherence to a specific religion, emphasizing instead the enhancement of objective knowledge about diverse religions and civic literacy. However, this shift has not substantially influenced the portrayal of Korean new religions. The earliest descriptions of Daesoon Jinrihoe found in textbooks published during the sixth national curriculum merely mention it as a sect of Jeungsan-religions (甑山敎), with variations in content and table across publishers. Additionally, in textbooks such as Religious Studies published by municipal ministries of education, Daesoon Jinrihoe is only described as a contemporary new religion involved in social activities. These instances highlight the inconsistency in the changing narratives regarding new religions in the educational sector. Improvements in representing new religions are necessary to enhance the religious literacy of Korean society beyond a narrow focus on Daesoon Jinrihoe's propagation. Lastly, this research suggests an integrated analysis of the description of Daesoon Jinrihoe in the national curriculum, including adjacent subjects and public communication, such as research and the dissemination of reference materials for the publication of future textbooks.

In indoor disaster scenarios such as fires or gas leak, prompt rescue operations are essential to minimize expected casualties. This paper proposes a simulation model that applies the concept of Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) for effective search and rescue in indoor fires. To this end, we first identify appropriate agents to model search and rescue operations. The proposed agent-based simulation consists of a fire and map model, an occupant model, a drone model for occupants searching, a rescuer model for searching and rescuing occupants, and a control center model that assigns missions to drones and rescuers. The agent models identified according to the MUM-T concept interact with other agents during the fire response simulation. Simulation experiments were conducted for search and rescue operations in three scenarios, one consisting of only rescuers and two with mixed rescuers and drones for MUM-T. The simulation results indicated that a drone applied to MUM-T could replace an average of four rescuers. The simulation method proposed in this study is expected to improve the efficiency of search and rescue operations in indoor disaster situations and minimizing the loss of life.

In this study, CO2-immobilized desulfurized gypsum(CFDG) was applied to ground granulated blast furnace slag to examine the basic properties of mortar and concrete, and to evaluate its responsiveness through field demonstration test. CFDG had a relatively circular composition compared to desulfurized gypsum(DG), and its main components were CaO 47.6 % and SO3 22.1 %. As a result of mortar and concrete tests, the flow tended to increase and the compressive strength was at the same level. In addition, the target properties of concrete for application to farm roads, which were a slump of 120±25 mm and a compressive strength of 24 MPa, were satisfied with a slump of 135 mm and a compressive strength of 42.1 MPa at 28 days. In February 2024, an on-site demonstration of a farm road was conducted in Seongmun-myeon, Dangjin-si, and as a result of reviewing the compressive strength according to curing conditions, the physical properties and durability of unhardened concrete, the target results were satisfied, expanding the use of CFDG by applying fine powder of blast furnace slag and carbon reduction can be expected.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the value, necessity and legitimacy of STEAM Education and to propose practical approaching methods for STEAM Education to be applicable in Korea through a variety of literature review, case studies and collecting suggestions from domestic and international educational experts. The research questions are as follows: (1) To investigate the perception, understanding and recognitions of domestic and foreign professionals in STEAM education. (2) To analyze policy implications for an improvement in STEAM. The following aspects of STEAM were found to be challenges in our current STEAM policy after analyzing multiple questionnaires with the professionals and case studies including their experiences, understanding, supports and directions of the policy from the governments. The results indicate that (1) there was a lack of precise and conceptual understanding of STEAM in respect to experience. Training sessions for teachers in this field to help transform their perception is necessary. Development of practical programs with an easy access is also required. It is important to get the aims of related educational activities recognized by the professionals and established standards for an evaluation. The experts perceived that a theme-based learning is the most preferred and effective approaching method and the programs that develop creative thinking and learning applicable to practice are required to promote. (2) The results indicate that there was a lack of programs and inducements for supporting outstanding STEAM educators. It is shown that making an appropriate environment for STEAM education takes the first priority before training numbers of teachers unilaterally, thus securing enough budget seems critical. The professionals also emphasize on developing specialized teaching materials that include diverse inter-related subjects such as science technology, engineering, arts and humanities and social science with diverse viewpoints and advanced technology. This work requires a STEAM network for teachers to link up and share their materials, documents and experiences. It is necessary to get corporations, universities, and research centers participated in the network. (3) With respect to direction, it is necessary to propose policy that makes STEAM education ordinary and more practical in the present education system. The professionals have recommended training sessions that help develop creative thinking and amalgamative problem-solving techniques. They require reducing the workload of teachers and changing teachers' perspectives towards STEAM. They further urge a tight cooperation between departments of the government related with STEAM.
