This study investigates consumers' perceptions when customers participate in the process of innovating new products or new services essential to companies in the era of the 4th industrial revolution. Specifically, this study investigates how consumers' product evaluation varies depending on two types of innovation for a company's new product development (technology-based innovation and market-based innovation) and two customer roles (as information providers and as co-developers) participated in the development process. The research questions are as follows: As technology-based innovation and market-based innovation are different types of innovations, will consumers' product evaluation vary depending on these different types of innovation? If customers participate in the development process of a new product reflecting each innovation, how will the information that the customer participated be perceived by other consumers? In addition, this customer participation method can serve as an information provider and a co-developer, and will consumers' evaluation of new products vary depending on this role? As a result of verifying the hypothesis using an experimental method, it shows that consumers' product evaluation differs significantly depending on the role of customers who participated in the process of developing new product development process. In other words, the results indicate that the case where customers participated as market information providers in the process of developing new products is more favorable to the new product evaluation than the case where they participated as co-developers of the new products. In addition, there is an interaction effect between the type of product innovation and the role of customer participation. To be specific, when a product reflecting technological innovation is released, there is no difference in consumers' product evaluation according to the roles of two different customer participations. However, when a market-based innovation product is released, product evaluation is more favorably perceived when customers participated as information providers than they were involved in the new product development process as co-developers. This study is of theoretical significance in that it distinguishes each type of innovation and verified how other consumers' perceptions vary depending on their role when customers participate in the innovation process. Finally, limitations and future study directions are suggested along with practical implications.

The goal of this paper is to analyze the effects of various firm characteristics on the probability for a firm to receive government’s financial supports for R&D. In the empirical analysis, a Probit model is estimated for the 2008 Korea Innovation Survey data. The main contribution of the paper is to investigate the distribution of R&D supports at the national level, instead of the program level. Especially, it is the first academic effort to evaluate the effects of regional and industrial variables. The results show that: (1) firm size and export increase the probability of receiving government’s R&D support; (2) variables measuring firms’ innovative ability, such as official designation as innovative firm, running R&D institute, number of R&D personnel, also have significantly positive effects; (3) firms in the chemical and automobile industries are more likely to receive R&D supports; and (4) firms in Teakyoung and Bukyoung regions are more likely to receive R&D supports.
This study is to confirm the core factors of innovative capabilities and technological entrepreneurship affecting the performance of technology management and business management of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through the consideration about the complex natures of technological innovation affecting by multidimensional factors, this study designs the research model that innovative capabilities, the performances of technology and business management are arranged in accordance with the innovation process; input-output-outcome. To meet this research purpose, the hypothesis are set up based on the previous research studies and the research samples are selected from members of the Innovative Business (INNO-BIZ) Association, located in Seoul and Geyonggi province. As a result of regression analysis to the responses gathered from 360 firms, the performance of business management is influenced positively by the technology superiority, market growth and business profitability which are the dominant factors of performance of technology management. In addition, three sub-variables of innovative capabilities such as R&D, strategic planning and learning capability, have positive effects on both the managerial performances. Innovativeness and progressiveness of technological entrepreneurship affect both the performances positively. Moreover, the co-relation between technological entrepreneurship of an innovation leader and innovative capabilities of organizational members are identified. Lastly, technological entrepreneurship has the mediating effect on the path of leading innovative capabilities to the managerial performances. In conclusion, the research results imply that technological innovation-type firms should periodically evaluate the performance of technology management which are the output of technological innovations and the reinvestment for ultimate business success. And improving and developing innovative capabilities and technological entrepreneurship is required to continuously and consistently investing and supporting resources on technological innovations at the firm-and government-level. It is considered that these are the crucial methods for securing the technologically competitive advantage of SMEs with less resources and narrow innovation range.
In knowledge-based economies, the facilitation of knowledge diffusion among R&D performing actors has become the most important factor for the growth of national science and technology. Korea has strived for revitalizing R&D partnerships between public and private sectors since 1970, but results of KIS (Korean innovation survey) data analysis show that R&D cooperation with public institute or academic sector are not a great help to Korean firm's innovation on the whole. Especially, in small and medium sized firm, R&D partnerships with public sector do not have positive influence on their innovation. This implies policies of activating R&D partnership should be formulated based on firm's cooperation demand. In addition to this, discriminatory cooperation plans between large firms and small and medium sized firms are needed to raise the effectiveness of R&D partnership.
This study analyzes effects of the government-funded energy conservation technology research program using a simple calculation-based valuation method. Energy conservation amounts by 50 commercialized technologies are calculated and then transformed to energy conservation effect and pollution reduction effect. Export and import-substitution effects are also calculated. Empirical results show that effectiveness of the research program has been increasing rapidly after 1996 while research fund has not. We suggest rapid increase of government support of this program so that the goal of the research program can be reached.
