  • Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), important pests of agricultural crops in Korea, including eggplant and potato, were collected in the Kyonggido area each summer from 1983 to 1986. Data were recorded for rates of parasitism against each host stage and seasonal activity. The parasitoids NothoserPhus afissae (Watanabe), (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupidae), Uga menoni (Kerrich), (Hymenoptera: Cha1cididae), and Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were reared from the host insects. A solitary larval parasitoid, N. afissae, was reared from 2nd to 4th instar brval hosts, with parasitism being highest in the 3rd instar collection. U. menoni, a solitary larval-pupal parasitoid, was reared from 3rd instar larvae to pupae, and parasitism was highest in the pupal collection. N. afissae and U. menoni occurred during June to September. N. afissae showed relatively high parasitism during the entire study period as compared with other species, while parasitization by U. menoni was highest in July. P. foveolatus, a gregarious larval parasitoid, did not generally appear until September, although it appeared in early August in the southern part of Korea. The number of P. foveolatus emerging from a mummy varied, ranging from 7 to 26 (mean = 13. 8).

  • Three kinds of cercaria were deleted through the gonad investigation of Neverite didyma, Lunatia fortuni, and Rapana thomasiana in the vicinity sea of Naecho-do, the estuary of the Keum river in the western coast of Korea from March, 1982 to April, 1983, Cercaria yamagutii was found in Neverita didyma and Lunatia fortuni, and the infection rate was quite high-$12.32\%$ and $30.24\%$, respectively. Cercaria isoninae in Neverita didyma and Cercaria pseudogranifera in Rapana thomasiana were also detected, and their infection rates were $0.19\%\;and\;0.83\%$ respectively. Therefore, it would be added that Neverita didyma and Lunatia fortuni as the intermediate hosts of Cercaria yamagutii and Cercaria isoninae, and Rapana thomasiana as the intermediate host of Cercaria pseudogranifera.

  • Levels of platelets and other hematological values were monitored in 21 Saimiri and 12 Aotus monkeys over a period of three weeks post·infection with monkey·adapted Indochina CDC-1 strain of Plasmedium falciparum. In both Snlinoiri sciureus boliviensis and Aetus nancymai karyotype-1 monkeys the severest thrombocytopenia was observed at 14 days post-infection coinciding with peak parasitemia, neutropenia, Iynlphocytosis, and anemia associated with severe hemoglobinemia and elevated fibrinogen degeneration products(FDP's), MCH and MCV profiles in Aotus monkeys decreased with ascending parasitemia. In contrast, these parameters in Saimiri were characterized by a significant compensatory increase correlating with parasitemia. In general, thrombocytopenia was one of the earliest clinical manifestations of the infection with the platelets returning to normal levels shortly after peak parasitenlia at 14 days. Platelet kinetics had a strong correlation with hematologic and parasitologic values in the Aotus nlodel. No consistent associations were observed between platelet kinetics and other parameters in the Saimiri model. These data indicate that the Aotus model for malaria is more predictable than the Saimiri. Further, platelet turnover rates and recovery provide a useful prognostic parameter during malaria infection. The results are discussed in relation to the value of the two species of monkeys as models for the pathogenesis of human malaria.

  • The parasitism, development time, hatchability, and progeny production of Trichogramma chilonis(TC) females developed in eggs of Helicoverpa assulta (HAs), Cadra cautella (CC), and Helicoverpa armigera (HAr), respectively, were compared with those developed in reciprocal eggs at constant temperatures of $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 50~70% under 16L-8D. Developmental performances of TC reared in each of the three hosts on the following hosts(host tested) appeared differently, and were affected most by the size of the proceeding hosts and test host. Among the parameters parasitism and progeny production were affected more than others. Parasitism was significantly different between the treatments, lowest in CC-HAr($10.1{\pm}2.05%$) and highest in HAr-HAs($47.0{\pm}2.09%$), and the hatchability showed similar pattern. Development time as well was shortest in the CC-HAr where previous host is smallest and test host is biggest. The highest number of progeny production of TC was observed in HAr-HAs($93.9{\pm}6.87$ wasps), and the lowest was CC-HAs($18.4{\pm}6.36$ wasps).

  • Background: We are necessarily considering changes in the parasite infection rate and methods in Korea from 1970 to the present from the perspective of natural healing. Purposes: This study was to investigate how the difference in the rate of reduction in infection rate has changed and progressed to the present. Methods: A literature review was conducted. Results: Until the 1970s, Korea had one of the highest parasite infection rates. The Parasitic Disease Prevention Act was enacted to control the infection rate in 1966. From 1969, the nationwide national parasite management project was conducted for all students twice a year to treat all parasitic eggs until 1995. In addition, the government commissioned the Korean Association for Parasite Eradication (KAPE) to conduct a national parasite infection survey eight times, from 1971 to 2012, every two years. As a result, the overall egg positive rate of parasite was 84.3% in 1971 but decreased to 2.6% in 2012. In addition, Ascaris lumbricoides, Paragonimus westermani, Taenia spp., and intestinal protozoa were significantly reduced nationwide. Conclusions: Successful control in Korea is judged to have achieved a successful effect by systematically managing national economic growth, social consensus on parasite eradication, improved professional parasite prevention guidelines, and supply of effective anthelminthics.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the species of native parasitoids attacking Phyllocnistis citrella and their parasitism in citrus orchards in Jeju, Korea. During the survey period from 2013 to 2014, seven parasitoids belonging to Chalcidoidea were found: majority of the parasitoids were Sympiesis striatipes with 73% and Quadrastichus sp. with 22% in Eulophidae. The others were Neochrysocharis sp., Pnigalio sp., Holcopelte sp., Ageniaspis sp. (Encyrtidae) and Trichomalopsis sp. (Pteromalidae). Average parasitism rate reached 10.7% in orchards with spraying insecticide, and 32.2% in environmental-friendly managed orchards.

  • Recent patterns of infection with digenetic larval trematodes in fresh- water and brackish-water ask were studied in three locations of the river Taewha during the period from April to October, 1988, and compared with the data reported previously in the same river, 0(16 species of fish examined, the encysted larvae of Cyathocotyle orientalis were found most frequently from 9 species of fresh.water fish. The metacercariae of Echinochasmus sp. , Metacercaria hasegawai and Metagonimus yokogawai were found from 8 species, those of Clonorchis sinensis from 7 species, and Exorchis oviformis and Metorchis orientalis from 5 species of fish. The infection rates of fish with C. sinensis metacercariae were not lower than those reported in 1980, whereas their intensity of infection was found lowered in 3 species, Ccreobagrus brevicorpus, Gnathopogon atromaculatus, and Funtungia herzi. The infection rates of 3 species of fish with M. yokogawai metacercariae were lower than the results in 1982, while the rate was higher in 2 species, Zacco platypus, and Z. temmincki, and rather stationary in Flecoglossus altivelis. The intensity of infection in several species of fish appeared rather higher than in 1980. The encysted larvae of C. orientalis, Echinochasmus sp., E. oviformis and Metacercaria hasegawai showed variations in infection rates of fish in 1980 and in the present study. It was found that the rate of infection with digenetic larval trematodes in fresh- water fish was still relatively high in the river Taewha, and the metacercarial burden in the fish varied greatly by different fish in 1980 and in the present study.

  • A survey on the infection status of Sparganum and Gnathossoma in frogs was carried out in 11 areas in Gyeongsangnam-do and Cheonlanam-do province, a southern part of Korea. 1. Among 626 frogs examined, 4% were infected with Sparganum, but none with Gnathostoma. The infection rates of Sparganum were variable according to the areas. Those from Kimhae, Sunchon, Jinhae, Sachun, Kosung, Keoje, and Hadong were 16%, 9.1%, 9.1%, 4.1%, 2%, 2%, and 1.5% respectively, but frogs from Hapchun, Kwangju, Namwon and Sanchung were not found infected. 2. Rana nigromaculata was the only species infected with Sparganum. Rana rugesa and Bombing orientalis were not infected. 3. Sparganum was mainly found in the legs and the trunk of frog. About 92.5% of worms were detected in the femoral intermuscular connective tissue. 4. Number per infected frog was in range of one to five, and 2.8% of frogs were inacted by only one worm. 5. The heavier the frog weight, the higher the infection rate of Sparganum. In frogs of 51~60grams, 28.6% were infected.

  • Cotesia glomerata L., an internal parasitoid wasp, attacks the larvae of both the cabbage white butterfly (Artogeia rapae L.) and the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.). It can be utilized as a natural biological enemy to control these two insect pests in the summer cabbage fields of the Korean highland areas. The developmental response and sex ratio of C. glomerata to various temperatures and its longevity were examined in the laboratory. The egg-to-larva and pupa stages of C. glomerata were 12.1 ± 2.1 and 6.4 ± 1.8 days, respectively, at 20℃, The developmental threshold for egg-to-larva and pupa stages were 7.7 and 8.5℃, respectively. The sex ratios of C. glomerata when reared under various temperatures were 61.0 ± 4.5% at 15℃, 44.2 ± 1.0% at 20℃, and 39.0 ± 2.3% at 25℃, and the incidence of females increased as the temperature decreased. The longevity of C. glomerata when fed a 10% sugar solution was 20.4 ± 0.2 days, while in adults without any feed, the longevity was 3.6 ± 0.1 days. Indoor reared C. glomerata adults were released into cabbage fields from 2007 to 2018, in early August of each year, and the outdoor parasitism rates were surveyed. The parasitism rates were found to increase gradually as the year passed (Y = 0.2696X + 2.8633, R2 = 0.3994). The highest parasitism rate was observed in 2013 at 7.6%, and the lowest was in 2018 at 6.5 %. These results could be used as basic information for biological control of kimchi cabbage pests at highland fields.
