  • The purposes of this study are to identify the meaning of the geometrical patterns preferred by ancient Korean peoples and to classify them into some groups by their similarity. We investigated various patterns found on clothing and relics from GoJoseon to Goguryeo period, and utilized secondary sources such as history articles, Internet materials and photo and analyzed the associations of the varied patterns found in pottery, handicrafts, and clothing with the ancient cultures. We found the letters (ㅇ, ㅁ, and ㅅ of Korean alphabet, Hangul) preferred by ancestors who worshipped nature to identify the significations attached by them to particular patterns. The results confirm the following: first, the circle pattern indicated the sun, moon, stars in the sky, a bronze mirror, and a man's face. Circles and ovals were also observed to represent the individual souls of the clan or community. Second, square patterns symbolized the land and the patterns that signified the wellbeing of family and the country. Oblique rectangles were more frequently used as they represented a double use of the triangle, a shape that implied mystic power. Third, triangle symbolized regeneration, power, and humanity. While the Neolithic Age jade remnants of hair combs appear not to be irrelevant to the process of comb-shaped pottery production of the time, many fine comb-like lines may be found on bronze mirrors. Through its review of the glorious designs inherited from and established by ancient ancestors, the present research endeavor may help in identifying the spirits and traditions of Korean history.

  • In Korea, the school mathematics curricula have been revised in every average 6 years by the government. From the year 2013, the new revised curricula called 2009 version are implied. The subject of elementary mathematics in this new curricula contains four issues to be improved. First, it should be allowed to call the basic figures such as box, cylinder, ball, quadrilateral, triangle and circle in verbal languages. Second, the name of the activities to define mathematical concepts should be changed from 'Yaksok', which means 'promise' in English, to a better and more honest one. Third, the concave polygons should be treated together with the convex ones. Fourth, the calculations of fractions should be weakened as much as possible for the elementary school children.

  • What is a foundational element of plane geometry? Isn't it possible to constitute the contents of plane geometry from that element? In this paper, we suggest a view point that triangle is a foundational element of plane geometry. And take some examples of reconstruction of usually given contents and mathematical activity centered on the triangle in plane geometry.

  • This study focused on the development and effect of children's art creativity program applying basic three shapes : square, triangle, and circle. The program consisted of 10 art activities. A total of 55 children participated the 10 week program to examine the effectiveness of this program. The experimental design included a pretest, treatment, and post-test. Results showed that the experimental group children scored significantly higher on creativity in the posttest than the control group children.

  • This study is aimed to compare the area of geometry of elementary mathematics textbooks in korea and china. Through this study, we would like to suggest some guidelines in order to develop geometric curriculum and textbooks in korea and to search for more efficient methods of learning mathematics. For this, we have looked through the general characteristics of geometry domain in mathematics curriculums and the textbooks in korea and china. Furthermore, we have found the similarities and differences while comparing specific contents in the two countries. The followings are the conclusions of this study. First, The mathematics curriculum in korea is divided into 'figure' domain, but the one in china is divided into 'space and figure' domain, which deals with figure and measurement. And china constructs the contents of the basic figure as a whole unit. Second, korea gives clear learning aims about contents whereas china gives learning activities. Lastly, when starting teaching a plain figure, korea focuses on checking and finding definitions and characters through fundamental figures. However, china focuses on figuring out components and the relations among them throughout various plain figure activities.

  • This research supports the idea that manipulative devices can be an effective modality tool for learning abstract concepts involved with identifying geometric shapes and enhance learners' problem solving and motivation. Until recently specified manipulative device has been adapted only in traditional classroom environment and it has been very rare to find devices that is designed for online-basis. This study focused on designing and implementing an educational software which guide learners with geoboard in identification and characteristics of polygons. In addition to the function to draw and to delete various shapes, this software helps learners immediately assess the outcome. The results of the Delphi Technique show promising evidence for it being a very efficient means to learn geometric shapes and increase learners' motivation to learn the subject matter.

  • Congruence of figure is a basic to learn a symmetrical figure and helps to understand the characteristics of figure and know the way of drawing figures. The knowledge of congruence provides us art attainments to understand design and fine pieces of art. However, it is difficult to expect the interaction between students or between teachers and students, because of spending too much time for cutting papers and making the shapes of figure during the class for establishing the concepts. This study utilized a question-based interaction model which would foster elementary school student's learning effectiveness and make them understood the concept of congruence, also developed a congruence learning system which could communicate in both synchronous and asynchronous situation.
