Mechanical Properties and Biodegradability of HDPE/TPS Blends (HDPE/TPS블렌드의 물성 및 생분해도)

  • Thermoplastic starch(TPS) was prepared from mixing starch and glycerol by twin extruder. The blends were then prepared from high density polyethylene(HDPE) and TPS. Mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphology of the blends were investigated. Their biodegradability was also studied by using aerobic composting method(ISO14855). Tensile strength, modulus and elongation at break decreased as the content of TPS increased. In particular elongation at break decreased rapidly even at the lower content of TPS. The melting temperatures of the blends were not changed, which showed that HDPE and TPS were immiscible. The morphology of the fractured surface of blend films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). It was found that phases were separated. After composting for 45days, the biodegradability of the blends increased as the content of TPS increased.

Anesthesia Dolorosa following Retrogasserian Glycerol Injection for Trigeminal Neuralgia (삼차신경절액조내 순수 글리세롤 주입후 속발한 무지각성통증 -증례 보고-)

  • Percutaneous retrogasserian gangliolysis is suitable for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia because it is simple and effective. Further, it can avoid severe complications such as anesthesia dolorosa or dysesthesia that may develop after surgical procedure. However we have experienced an anesthesia dolorosa(pain in an area or region that is anesthetic) after percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol injection. This deafferentation pain is characterized by scratching, burning or itching sensation; and has shown to be of higher incidence in older and inemotionally unstable patients. Anesthesia dolorosa is relatively rare but difficult to treat. Consideration should be made for the complication which may develop during the procedure.

Synthesis of Carbonate Derivatives and Derived Cetane Number for the Use of Diesel Additives (경유 첨가제로 쓰일 수 있는 카보네이트 유도체의 합성과 세탄가 향상도)

  • Carbonate derivatives were synthesized for the use of diesel additives and the derived cetane numbers of the derivatives were measured. Some carbonate ester derivatives were synthesized from 1,2-glycerol carbonate and long alkyl chain fatty acids. To improve the solubility, we introduced unsaturated groups into aliphatic carbons and alkyl group into ${\alpha}$-carbon to the carbonyl group. The derived cetane numbers obtained from ASTM method were increased up to 1.0, which means some carbonate derivatives could be potential diesel additives.

  • Green Chemistry emerged at the end of 20th century, which aims the development of the technologies for the sustainable society at the molecular level. Most products we consume in everyday life are produced through chemical processes, and we often oversee the fact that huge amount of solvents are used and disposed. At the present time most solvents used in laboratories as well as industries are volatile organic compounds(VOC), which gives health and environmental problems. Therefore scientists are seeking new materials which have equivalent properties of VOCs as solvent, and at the same time gives no health and environmental problems. In this brief review, the author describes the present status of research and development activities of green solvent materials throughout research societies worldwide. At present the most attractive green solvent candidates are water, glycerol, supercritical carbon dioxide and ionic liquids. In order to give the pictures of these materials, the author tried to introduce the overall aspects of green solvents in various chemical reaction as well as catalytic roles.

  • In this paper, immobilization of lipase (Rhizomucor miehei, Rhm) onto ion-exchange resin pretreated with oleic acid and its application were studied. Immobilization efficiency was reached to 82% when weakly basic anion exchange resin, Duolite A-568, was used. Immobilized Rhm was stable in water, chloroform and hexane, however, unstable in alcoholic solvents. When immobilized Rhm was applied to the esterification reaction of glycerol and fatty acid, content of DG in the product mixture was ca. 80 mol% and 1,3-DG in total DG reached to 98%.

  • Optimal conditions for preparation of starch/PVA blends were investigated with the consideration of factors that may influence mechanical properties of the blends. $L_{27}(3^{13})$ experimental designs based on Taguchi method were performed and then tensile strength, strain at break, Young's modulus and tear strength of films of the blends were measured to determine the optimal conditions for preparation. Interaction effects for each factor were determined from analysis of variables. Results of $L_{27}(3^{13})$ experiments indicated that glycerol and urea were important process factors affecting optimization of the mechanical properties.

Performance Comparison of Continuous Reactors for Bioethanol Production Based on Glycerol (글리세롤 기반의 바이오에탄올 생산을 위한 연속생산반응기의 성능 비교)

  • Ethanol production using glycerol as a carbon source was performed by Enterobacter aerogenes immobilized on calcium alginate beads. To improve the ethanol production, the optimal conditions such as loading amount of immobilized cells and glycerol concentration were investigated. The optimal loading amount of immobilized cells and glycerol concentration were 10 mL of calcium alginate bead and 10 g/L, respectively. Consequently, glycerol consumption rate, ethanol concentration and yield were 0.32 g/$L{\cdot}h$, 3.38 g/L and 0.43 g/g on the batch production, respectively. Continuous production of ethanol was successfully achieved using two types of immobilized cell reactors (continuous stirred tank reactor and packed bed reactor) from 10 g/L of glycerol. In the continuous stirred tank reactor, glycerol consumption, ethanol concentration, specific productivity and yield were 9.8 g, 4.67 g/L, 1.17 g/$L{\cdot}h$, 0.48 g/g, respectively. The concentration of produced ethanol was 38-44% higher comparison to batch fermentation, and continuous stirred tank reactor showed better performance than packed bed reactor.

  • 바이오디젤은 동식물성 기름과 메탄올의 트랜스에스테르화 반응에 의해 생산되는 지방산메틸에스테르(FAME, fatty acid methyl esters)로서, 트랜스에스테르화 공정에는 KOH, NaOH, $NaOCH_3$등의 균질계 화학촉매를 이용한 방법, 무촉매 공정인 초임계 메탄올 이용 방법, 그리고 효소촉매를 이용한 방법이 있다. 초임계 공정은 에너지 소비와 장치비가 커서 경제성이 떨어지는 것으로 보고되며 화학촉매 공정은 반응 효율이 높다는 장점을 가지고 있지만, 반응 및 정제단계가 복잡하고 정제과정에 폐수를 발생시키는 문제점을 가지고 있다. 고정화 효소를 사용하는 효소 공정은 에너지 비용의 절감, 후 처리 공정의 단순화, 고 순도의 글리세롤을 얻을 수 있는 장점이 있지만, 반응 속도가 느리고 효소 가격이 비싸다는 단점이 있어 현재까지 상업화되지 못하고 있다. 반응속도가 높고 재사용이 가능한 효소 촉매 공정 개발을 위해 본 연구에서는 Candida rugosa, Rizhopus oryzae 2종을 실리카에 동시 고정화하였다. 고정화 Lipase의 제조는 실리카겔을 과산화수소를 이용하여 전처리를 하고 Acetone과 3-APTES의 혼합용액을 첨가한 후 실리카겔과 (silanization)을 진행 하였다. 그리고 glutaraldehyde를 첨가 하여 공유 결합을 형성 한 후에 증류수를 사용하여 실리카겔을 회수하여 lipase(Rizhopus oryzae, Candida rugosa 10% 용액)를 고정화 하였다. 고정화 효소의 효소 활성을 측정한 결과 3000-3500 Unit(${\mu}mol/g{\cdot}min$)으로 측정되었다. 제조된 고정화 효소를 이용하여 Canola Oil을 바이오디젤로 전환하는 실험을 진행하였으며 생성물로부터 고정화 효소를 분리한 후에 상층의 에스테르층을 취하여 수세한 뒤 원심분리하여 FAME 함량을 측정한 결과 83%의 바이오디젤을 얻을 수 있었다. 그리고 효소 촉매 트랜스에스테르화 반응의 Enzyme, Water, Methanol 투입량의 반응 변수들에 대하여 반응표면분석법(Response Surface Methodology)을 적용하여 최적 반응조건을 도출하는 연구를 수행하였다.

The oral dose toxicity test and skin irritation test of eco-friendly plasticizer using crude glycerol derived (폐글리세롤을 이용한 친환경 가소제의 경구투여독성 및 피부자극성 시험)

  • Objectives: The major objective of this study is the oral dose toxicity test and skin irritation test of eco-friendly plasticizer using crude glycerol derived from the biodiesel process. Methods: Glyceroldiacetate laurate(GDL) was synthesized from glycerol monolaurat(GML) and acetic acid. The synthesis of the GDL plasticizer was measured with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscop(NMR) and FT-IR(Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer). To provide information on the safety of GDL, we carried out an oral dose toxicity test for GDL in Sprague-Dawley rats. Also, we carried out a skin irritation test for GDL in New Zealand White rabbits. Results: The oral dose toxicity test in Sprague-Dawley rats showed that GDL is a non-toxic material. The result of the skin irritation test on New Zealand White rabbits showed that GDL is non-irritating. Conclusions: From the results of oral dose toxicity test and skin irritation test, we concluded that the developed plasticizer showed excellent eco-friendly property. Based on our results, we confirmed the development of an eco-friendly non-phthalate plasticizer. Applicability for PVC toys and food and drug packaging materials was found.

The Effects of Ingestion of Water or Glycerol on Renin Activity, Rectum Temperature, Blood Electrolytes Concentration in Exercise (수분 및 Glycerol의 섭취가 운동시 renin activity, 직장온도, 혈중 전해질 농도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of ingestion of water or glycerol on renin activity, rectum temperature, blood electrolytes concentration in exercise. The present study took as its subjects five male students who major in physical education. The two different conditions were based on ingestion of water, ingestion of glycerol and a series of four blood gatherings were carried out at rest, at post-exercise 20 min, at post-exercise 40 min, at recovery. The findings of this study was as follows; On renin activity change, in the comparison within at rest ingestion of glycerol, ingestion of water were significant difference at post-exercise 20, 40 min (p<0.01). 2. On osmolality change, in the comparison within at rest, ingestion of glycerol was significant difference at post-exercise 40 min (p<0.05). ingestion of water was not. On Na and K concentration change, in the comparison within at rest, ingestion of glycerol was significant difference at post-exercise 40 min (p<0.05), ingestion of water was not. On Ca and Mg change, in the comparison within at rest, ingestion of glycerol, ingestion of water were no significant difference at all period.
