  • The operation of the theater's seasonal program is an important service for the stability of theater management and audience development. However, the domestic theater season system has been around for 20 years, but still has not been established in practice compared to overseas theaters, and academic research is also lacking. Therefore, in this study, the government wanted to draw out elements of 'season system' program services and additional services provided by domestic and foreign theaters, and to calculate the importance of each attribute to suggest a plan to operate a seasonal service suitable for the actual conditions in Korea. Thus, through the analysis of seven theater seasonal programs, a study model consisting of two higher, seven median and 23 lower factors was derived. Based on this survey, 14 theater experts were asked to compare the priorities of each factor. Studies have shown that the composition of packages and works in program services is important, and that monetary factors are important in additional services. In other words, an important element in the seasonal system is judged to be the need to upgrade program services and selectively operate a small number of additional services with large audience needs to attract audiences.

  • This article examined the current status of performance activities in the theaters in Ulsan during the Japanese colonial period, and examined the characteristics and social roles of performance culture at that time.,The cultural space during the Japanese colonial period can be divided into theater space and semi-theater space.,The theater spaces in Ulsan include Daejeonggwan, Sangbanggwan, and Ulsan Theater. The semi-theater spaces include Ulsan Youth Center, Ulsan Youth Alliance Hall, Barrack Youth Hall, Eonyang Youth Alliance Hall, Eonyang Christian Hall, Eonyang Christian Hall, Eonyang Inn, Eonyang Public Inn, Eonyang Public Normal School, Seosaeng School, Ulsan Public Aid Auditorium, Night school.,These spaces not only held events or performances for a specific purpose, but also played a role as public spaces producing local discourse. The theater was a complex cultural space where performances are performed along with movie performances, and artists and audiences meet.,Furthermore, the theater provided a special experience of producing and consuming various issues such as colonial modernization, modern city formation, and the emergence of new popular culture beyond the meaning of stage space.,The theaters in Ulsan also functioned as a space to represent the foreign culture acceptance, leisure activities, the performance and viewing of cultural contents, and the artistic skills of local artists in accordance with the purpose of establishing local theaters.,It was a base space for local discourse production and enjoyment activities by holding political rallies, meetings, lecture activities, and various conferences.,Political rallies were also concerts, enlightenment activities were also accompanied by film screenings, and music performances were associated with dance performances and charity gatherings.,In particular, Ulsan Theater, which is the first theater in Ulsan, and the role of the public hall, held a lecture, debate, and oratory for public enlightenment along with performances such as musical drama, children's song contest, fairy tale contest, small-sized play performance,, It was widely used as a large-scale rallying place, and served as a public hall, such as a place to visit outside theaters. • The Seoul Arts Center is an representing Korean arts-complex consisting of the Opera House, the Concert Hall and the Museums. Since its opening in 1993, it has been established as a mecca of arts and the culture in Korea. Many local public theatres in Korea are benchmarking its operating system and policy. Unlike most European or American theatres, the Seoul Arts Center has no resident art companies. It is not a 'producing theatre' whose programming is mainly based on house productions with resident companies, but a 'presenting theatre' that is to be managed with rental and invitation programs without resident companies. The majority of the Korean public theatres are also presenting theatres. This study aims to research and analyze how the Seoul Arts Center has developed the programming of the Opera House for last 19 years and which challenges and issues it has been dealing with, and finally to propose what will be recommendable remedies for its successful future. The analysis is divided into four development stages: preparation period from 1981 to 1992, establishment period from 1993 to 1999, growth period from 2000 to 2006, and lastly crisis period from 2007 to 2011. Facing the 20th anniversary next year(2013), the Opera House of the Seoul Arts Center is going through recent critical situations: higher competitions among increased theatres, trends of commercial musical productions, and rapid declines in its house programs due to the low budget and unclear programming policy. I propose as a discussion to start a repositioning strategy as a Korea's representing arts-complex, utilizing all sources from inside and outside and having the policy direction.

  • This study was designed to insist on the need of introducing the position of dramaturgs as professionals at performance venues. A dramaturg is a professional staff member that proposes an artistic orientation in the making process of performing arts works such as play and dance. Dramaturgs are divided into production dramaturgs participating in individual works and permanent dramaturgs resident in the theater. In the present study, discussions developed around plans to make use of permanent dramaturgs at local public theaters. The study introduced the advantages of the dramaturg position at culture and arts centers serving as a public theater in the community and proposed institutional improvement measures for it. At a culture and arts center, a dramaturg will play the roles of expanding culture and arts service to local residents, increasing creative chances for local artists, contribution to the vitalization of local culture, and narrowing the cultural gap between the Seoul metropolitan region and the rest of the nation. The introduction of a permanent dramaturg system should be supported by efforts across various aspects including the revision of Culture and Arts Promotion Act and Public Performance Act, improvement of the management system of culture and arts centers, change of performance evaluation methods for performance venues, and introduction of a cultivation course for the public sector.

  • This paper aims to explore and shed light on how the rise of streaming services has been affecting the media landscape in the recent years by looking at the conflicts between the Hollywood film industry and Netflix. It especially examines Netflix's disregard for the theatrical release, as it is the most portentous issue that could reshape the film industry, and Hollywood's opposition to it as revealed through the 2019 Academy Awards where the issue was brought into sharp relief. At the same time, this paper also questions whether theatrical distribution makes a film any more cinematic by examining how Hollywood film production has been largely concentrated on tentpoles and franchises, while Netflix has been producing diverse films often shunned by the studios. In this light, it concludes the changes wrought by Netflix, including its bypassing of the theatrical release, are not likely to be reversed.

  • It is a known fact that the spread of multiplexes has contributed to movie industry flourish and extending public rights for enjoying movies. However, in terms of Urban Discourse, Multiplexes centered in new downtown have given rise to Doughnut Phenomena in old downtown. It is especially regrettable that the local theaters which have been symbolic cultural spaces storing the 'memory of life' of local communities are disappearing due to a recession of business zone in old downtown. Japan has long been worked in various activities spotlighting on movie/image contents as the major means of creative urban regeneration. Among them, the 'Community Cinema' has made a contribution to regional revitalization by improving movie screening environment of the local community through renewal of local theaters and further creating related culture and industry in the local area. In this study, I focus on 'Fukaya Cinema' which started from NPO(Non-Profit Organization) and reused a closed industrial facility to a movie theater in cooperation with local TMO(Town Management Organization). Fukaya Cinema, which operates in the form of a business community, plays important roles as the core cultural facility in the local community and is regarded as a significant case showing a possibility of urban regeneration using movie/image contents. I investigate the specific founding process and activities of Fukaya Cinema and intend to derive the implications from that. Through this, I aim to provide the basic urban regeneration data utilizing movie/media contents.

  • Debate on the introduction of musical 'stage quota' has been triggered to protect domestic original musical market. In the in-depth interviews with experts, most of the interviewees were in favor of the introduction of this system, ensuring mainly cultural diversity. The proposed model by proponents is that large-scaled national and public theaters(1,000 seats or more) must perform original musicals at least from 20% to 30% of total musical performance days per year set by law until its competitiveness should be ensured. Opponents proposed that government should design musical promotion and funding policy. The study implies that stage quota should carried out since the system is essential, and should be institutionalized through legislation. It is also suggested that government should consider and consult the stakeholders to draft this system reflecting answerers' limitations such as target, quota rate, period to minimize side effects like shrinkage of musical industry.

  • Digital Signage and multi-view image system are used as the 4th media to deliver stories and information due to their strong immersion. A content image displayed on large Digital Signage is produced with the use of computer graphics, rather than reality image. That is because the images shot for content making have an extremely limited range of production and their limitation to high resolution, and thereby have difficulty being displayed in a large and wide Digital Signage screen. In case of Screen X and Escape that employ the left and right walls of in the center a movie theater as a screen, images are shot with three cameras for Digital Cinema, and are screened in a cinema with multi-view image system after stitching work is applied. Such realistic images help viewers experience real-life content. This research will be able to display high-resolution images on Digital Signage without quality degradation by using the multi-view image making technique of Screen X and Chroma key technique are showed the high-resolution Digital Signage content making method.

  • Perspectives on the basis of arts and cultural management, this study intends to suggest improvements in core curriculums that are required in order for South Korea, a country that has initiated into the animation industry through outsourcing from big-budget animation production countries such as America and Japan, to develop its own strong base in creative animation industry. The perspectives of arts management in this context means an integration nexus between human studies, social science and management, and suggestions are as follow: First, it is crucial to understand the current trend of animation industry structure across the globe, as well as to develop the ability of co-production. Animation industry often requires technical skills, capital strength and human resources, each having equal importance. Therefore, thorough analysis of the three components in worldwide animation industry must be preceded for animation production services. To do so, collaboration with major animation creation countries is the best option and is highly encouraged, so that the national animation curriculum shall be enhanced to meet such demands and hence develop various abilities. The second is a good understanding of new-media and new-platforms. Not only the traditional distributor of animation such as television and theater, the distribution system expands its scope to a variety of online sources including pod-casts and the Internet. Under these circumstances, a deep understanding towards animation distribution system and an analysis of the new consumer channel are also of paramount importance for animation production. Third, a possibility of animation supply chain through diversified routes and media have paved the way for a possible animation production services and distribution without a mega-budget. Thus, new curriculum shall need to reinforce marketing and management aspects that will in turn help individuals to establish a self-employed creative business. Last but not least, this study further includes illustration of current curriculum of animation studies in national universities, followed by detailed suggestions for the curriculum improvements based on the above mentioned three factors. It was observed that the current curriculums have been solely focused on practical works and technical skills of animation and art studies; a four-year-course colleges that provide animation courses usually lack components of human studies, social science and management. Thus, this study proposes essential contexts of management studies that are needed for individual business and also curriculum improvements that are derived from the analysis of the current industry and the new media.
