The feasibility of the use of porous fossil diatoms for indoor air pollution control was investigated via the characterization of physical and chemical properties. The fossil diatoms were observed by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). Diatomite had well-distributed pores below 5 nm and relatively large surface area compare to sericite. However, no porosity in sericite was found. Results showed that diatomite had better performance than sericite in respect to porosity and large surface area. But diatomite which is thermally treated at $950^{\circ}C$ has no porosity and low surface area because of combustion of fossil diatoms or calcination of inorganic oxide at high temperature, and has poor adsorption capability of ammonia gas. In conclusion, porous diatomite has relatively high performance to adsorb noxious chemical compounds, such as ammonia gas and VOCs.

This study investigated the paleoclimatic change using diatoms that were extracted from the high-resolution laminated layers of diatom ooze sediment cores GC08-EB01 in the eastern basin of the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica. The range of diatom valves per gram of dry sediment was from $0.4-4.2{\times}10^8g^{-1}$ in quantitative diatom assemblage analysis. Laminations are classified using visually dominant diatom species and terrigenous content. Biogenic diatom ooze laminae characterised by bloom of Corethron crilophilum, Eucampia antarctica, Fragilariopsis curta, F. kerguelensis, Odontella weissflogii, Proboscia inermis, R. styliformis, Thalassiosira antarctica, and Chaetoceros resting spores. Terrigenous laminae characterised by mixed diatom assemblage. The ratio of (Fragilariopsis curta+F. cylindrus)/Thalassiosira antarctica increase in horizons, suggesting increased sea-ice cover in the study area during the late Holocene (cold events). As a result, five cold events are identified on the basis of frequency of the critical taxa throughout the section.
Three diatom assemblage zones were erected from HMB-103 core sediment of the Heuksan Mud Belt. The paleoenvironmental changes were reconstructed basing on diatom analyses using indicator species, cold and warm water species, and salinity. Seventy-six species belonging to 41 genera were identified in the core sediments. The number of diatom valves per gram of dry sediment ranged from 0.1 to $15.4{\times}10^4g^{-1}$. As a result, diatom assemblage I in about 45,000 yr B.P showed a high abundance in cold species indicating a major influence by the Korea Coastal Current. Diatom assemblage II from 14,000 to 11,646 yr B.P is characterized by rare abundance and indicative of the cold periods at Younger Dryas with the lower sea-level. However, diatom assemblage III from 11,646 yr B.P to Holocene was more affected by the Yellow Sea Warm Current while the progressive sea level rise.
In the Pohang-Gampo area, several diatomite beds occurred in mostly thinner than 1 m are embedded in the Pohang Formation of marine environment and the pyroclastic Eoil Formation. The diatomite from the Eoil Formation is constituting the high-grade ore altered slightly by diagenesis. In contrast, the diatomite intercalated within the upper horizon of the Yeonil Group is comparatively low-grade and highly altered in places. During diagenesis, an increasing of crystallinity of opal, i.e., the original mineral component of diatom, results in ultimately the mineral transition to quartz with accompanying a drastic change in morphology and texture of the altered diatomite. The diagenetic alteration appears to have undergone by way of the chemical diagenesis, which is largely controlled by degree of fluid contact, rather than burial diagenesis. For the diatomite from the Pohang-Gampo area, careful SEM observations, XRD, chemical analyses, and determination of specific surface area were done to identify the fossil species, mineral and chemical composition, and other physical properties in the view of assesment of grade and quality. The domestic diatomite ores are evaluated to be not good in grade and quality, compared to those of famous foreign localities. However, some diatomite deposits of marin,: origin from the Pohang Formation is constituting a peculiar clay-rich type, i.e., moler applicable to the special usage such as a manufacturing of lightweight brick. Because such a diatomite is frequently intercalated relatively as a thicker bed in the upper part of the Yeonil Group, a systematic and careful investigation should be done for the exploitation and development of an economic diatomite deposit of the moler type.
Products using diatomaceous earth, which are used in various fields, are optimized for moisture absorption, but have problems such as high hardness, powder flying, and rough surface feel. To improve this, an olefin-based foam having low hardness and high elasticity was prepared by adding an excessive amount of inorganic material using EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate) having low hardness and excellent elasticity. Diatomaceous earth was added to impart moisture absorption characteristics of the foam, and the moisture absorption/drying characteristics showed a moisture absorption rate of about 10 to 15% and a moisture drying rate of 10 to 70% depending on the content of the diatomaceous earth. Through this study, it was possible to manufacture a water-absorbing olefin-based foam with diatomaceous earth added, and it was confirmed that the diatomaceous earth added to the foam had a great influence on water absorption and dissipation due to its microstructure and characteristics.
A total of 23 specimens were collected from the trench sections of the archaeological area, around Yongseong-ri, Buryang-myeon, Gimje. The diatoms identified to 61 species belonging to 32 genera and species diversity and abundance were very few. Three diatom assemblage zones were set up according to the vertical assemblage of each horizons, the absolute abundance of diatoms and the distribution of indicator species. In diatom assemblage zone I, marine species was mainly occurred. Because the marine species is not reported in study of the adjacent area, it is valuable data on sea-water inflow. In diatom assemblage zone II, the yield of brackish and freshwater species are abundant, indicating that the brackish water environment was caused by the influx of freshwater. In diatom assemblage zone III, the yield of freshwater species is high and species of genus Eunotia are mainly occurred. It is considered that they are deposited in wet soil environment where freshwater inflows occasionally.
In this study, We were investigated the interrelationships between epilithic diatom communities and physico-chemical factors at Banbyeon stream, Gilan stream and Nakdong river in the Lake Imha basin from September 2008 to June 2009. Epilithic diatom communities were identified a total 120 taxa which were composed to 2 Orders, 3 Suborders, 7 Families, 22 Genera, 108 species and 12 varieties. The dominant species were 4 taxa, which were Achnanthes alteragracillima, A. convergens, A. minutissima and Fragilaria construens var. venter during the investigation periods at 8 sites. Correlation coefficients between epilithic diatom communities and physicochemical factors were from -0.94 to 0.97. Correlation coefficients (r) between turbidity, QHEI and density, species number and indices of diatom communities were from -0.18 to 0.42 which was showed lower values than the values of chemical factors. Correlation coefficients (r) between QHEI and Epilithic diatom communities were showed the low values. Correlation coefficients (r) between TP and diatom indices (DAIpo, TDI) were 0.79 and 0.78, respectively. Therefore, epilithic diatom communities were greatly influenced by TP.
Diatoms were studied from the trench sediments around Bangudae petroglyphs in order to better understand the depositional environment before and after the construction of Sayeon dam in Ulsan. There were no diatoms produced from the sediments before the dam construction while the diatoms were produced from the sediments (depth of trench 228 cm) after the construction of the dam. Seventy-five species of diatoms of 27 genera were identified in the trench sediments. The number of diatom valves per gram of dry sediment ranged from $0.2-5.8{\times}10^5g^{-1}$. Four diatom assemblage zones were identified according to the frequency of critical taxa as follows: assemblage zone I, from 228 to 150 cm; assemblage zone II, from 150 to 122 cm; assemblage zone III, from 122 to 62 cm; and assemblage zone IV, from 62 to 0 cm. In addition, based on the environmental indicator species, an analysis was carried out to measure eutrophication, acidity and $Cl^-$ value. Results of the eutrophication and $Cl^-$ values were as follows. Based on the lower 74 cm horizons, the degree of eutrophication middle-high to $Cl^-$ values were lower, upper horizons appeared to eutrophication in the low, and $Cl^-$ values were high. Acidification from low horizons of 122 cm showed a neutral-alkaline degree whereas it exhibited acid in the upper part. In particular, regarding nutrients (TP and TN), the index taxa showed a higher TP value at 175 cm while higher TN value at 62 cm.
Diatomite is a silicic porous sedimentary rock composed of diatom frustules, used for filtration aid, filler, absorbent, abrasive, carrier, insulator, and fertilizer. During the calcination of diatomite to improve physical properties for filtration-aid application, amorphous silica is transformed to cristobalite. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy studies were carried out for 17 diatomite samples, showing that 16 diatomite samples contain cristobalite in the range of 6~100 %. Concentration of respirable cristobalite in air is regulated as harmful substances, but the residual cristobalite in food is treated as generally safe substance. The determination procedure of cristobalite content in food was established for managing food safety. Calibration curve of cristobalite filtered on silver membrane were obtained by X-ray diffraction. The lower limit of quantification was evaluated as 2.7 mg. The cristobalite was not detected in the analyses of selected food samples using the established procedure.
