We conducted phylogenetic analyses using multiplexed inter-simple sequence repeat genotyping by sequencing and compared chloroplast DNA sequences among Ardisia japonica, A. pusilla, and morphologically intermediate plants found on Jeju Island, Korea. Our network analysis demonstrated that the intermediate plants were genetically positioned between A. japonica and A. pusilla. Our comparison of the intergenic spacer between the psbA and trnH genes in chloroplast DNA indicated that four nucleotide substitutions separate A. japonica and A. pusilla, whereas the intermediate plants exhibited the A. japonica haplotype. Our results suggest that the intermediate plants on Jeju Island represent a natural hybrid of A. japonica, as the maternal species, and A. pusilla, and that they are attributable to Ardisia×walkeri. This record constitutes the first documented occurrence of the hybrid taxon in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from the soil collected in Gwangju and Pocheon City, Gyeonggi Province, Republic of Korea. Among 10 strains, six strains were already reported, but four strains were unrecorded in Republic of Korea. To identify wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of the D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were performed using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation tests were carried out using API 20C AUX kit. The 10 strains were assigned to the phyla Basidiomycota (8 strains) and Ascomycota (2strains). The unrecorded four yeast strains, NH33, NH19, NH20, and YP416, belong to the phylum Basidiomycota and the genera Buckleyzyma, Leucosporidium, Holtermanniales, and Mrakia, respectively. All strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. In this research, the morphological and biochemical properties of four unreported yeast species were characterized intensively, which were not officially reported in Korea.
Five ciliate species of Euplotes were isolated from fresh and coastal water during a sampling survey to identify unrecorded ciliates in South Korea. Their morphology was investigated using live observation, protargol and "wet" silver nitrate staining methods. Brief descriptions and microphotographs of each species and a comparison with related species are provided. Euplotes focardii is characterized by an average size of 65×47 ㎛ after protargol impregnation, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-eurystomus type. Euplotes nobilii shows an average size of 34×20 ㎛ after protargol staining, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-patella type. Euplotes octocarinatus, the only freshwater species described in the present study, is characterized by an average size of 66×46 ㎛ after protargol impregnation, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-patella type. Euplotes petzi has an average size of 43×30 ㎛ after protargol staining, a macronucleus hook-shaped and dorsal argyrome pattern in double-patella type. Euplotes raikovi is characterized by an average size of 40×24 ㎛ after protargol staining, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-patella type.
Two new records of marine nematodes, belonging to the family Ironidae de Man, 1876, are reported based on the specimens collected from intertidal sediments from the west coast of Korea. Conilia sinensis is characterized by a relatively long body length, a well-developed buccal cavity with three claw-like teeth, the presence of a single spicule with transverse striations, the presence of rib-shaped telamons, and single precloacal supplement. Pheronous donghaiensis is distinguished from other species of the genus by a well-developed buccal cavity with four claw-like solid teeth and minute denticles, relatively short and thick spicules with the central septum, the presence of 8-9 curved tubular-shaped precloacal supplements, and a sharp pointed tail with three small tubular supplements arranged into two rows in males. In this report, we provide a taxonomic description and illustrations of two unrecorded species of the family Ironidae by differential interference contrast microscopy. This is the first taxonomic report on the species of the family Ironidae from Korea.
We monitored the hitchhiker insect pests from the international vessels entering into Korea in 2021. As a result, total of 581 individuals were detected by the survey based on visual inspection with naked eye. Among them, 500 individuals were identified as 244 species of 65 families under 11 orders through the integrative taxonomic method with DNA barcoding and morphological reexamination, but the remaining 81 individuals were classified as only to the family level. Of the 244 species identified, 26 species were determined to be not-distributed species in Korea (two Orthoptera, two Hemiptera, one Megaloptera, five Coleoptera, three Hymenoptera, and 13 Lepidoptera). Among them, two species, Sagra femorata (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera) and Dendrolimus punctatus (Lasiocampidae, Lepidoptera), were discovered as 'Regulated species' listed by Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, South Korea. Therefore, we reported on the 26 not-distributed species in Korea and provided inanimate pathway information such as navigation routes on the vessels hitchhiking the species, state of the samples at the time of detection, identification results and original distribution for the detailed monitoring and the risk analysis on the species.

Two known species of the family Comesomatidae Filipjev, 1918 were collected from marine sediments of the sublittoral zone in the East Sea, Korea and described and illustrated. Dorylaimopsis variabilis Muthumbi, Soetaert and Vincx, 1997, which was originally described from the Kenyan coast in the Indian Ocean, is recorded from the East Sea, Korea for the first time; there are only slight differences in amphidial fovea turns, body length, body width and relative length of tail. Setosabatieria hilarula (De Man, 1922), Platt, 1985, which was originally described from the North Sea, is recorded from the East Sea, Korea for the first time; there are only slight differences in the number of precloacal supplements, the relative length of tail and the posterior portion of tail. We provide pictorial keys for determination of valid species in the genera Dorylaimopsis Ditlevsen, 1918 and Setosabatieria Platt, 1985. This is the first description of the genus Dorylaimopsis and Setosabatieria from Korean waters.

In March 2021, marine sediment from East Sea samples were suspended in a 2% NaCl solution, and serial dilution was performed in fresh marine and Reasoner's 2A agar. Isolated bacterial strains were identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, and showed at least 98.7% sequence similarity with previously reported bacterial species. Finally, seven bacterial strains which were validly published but not reported in Korea, were obtained. These isolates were allocated to the orders Bacillales and Flavobacteriales. The three Flavobacteriales strains are classified into the family Flavobacteriaceae. The other four Bacillales belong to the families Bacillaceae and Paenibacillaceae. The seven unrecorded bacterial strains in this study are classified into seven different genera, which are assigned to Mesobacillus, Paenibacillus, Gramella, Gillisia, Arenibacter, Fictibacillus, and Brevibacillus. During the investigation, the possibility of excavation of various unrecorded species in domestic marine sediment was confirmed. Gram-staining, cell morphology, physiological and basic biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis were performed in this study and provided in the description of each strain.
Three newly recorded rotifers were collected through surveys of several islands in Korea: Lecane perplexa (Ahlstrom, 1938); Lindia torulosa Dujardin, 1841; and Monommata maculata Harring & Myers, 1930. These species represent 24th, second, and third records of each genus discovered in Korea, respectively. Lecane perplexa and Monommata maculata, were collected from reservoirs using plankton nets, whereas Lindia torulosa was collected from a soil sample. The morphological characteristics of the discovered species are as follows: Lecane perplexa is characterized by a straight or slightly concave anterior margin of the lorica, an incomplete transverse fold on the ventral lorica, and a single toe with pseudoclaws and accessory claws; Lindia torulosa has an illoricated and vermiform body, a head with rostrum, a pair of auricles, cardate type trophi, and distinctively shaped epipharynx components; and Monommata maculata is characterized by long toes, an inner margin of rami with 10-12 serrated teeth, 3-4 large teeth, and interlocking teeth. Here, the morphological characteristics of the three Korean monogonont rotifers, which include trophi photographs, are presented. In addition, partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of each species are presented.
To obtain unrecorded bacterial species from Korean islands, various samples were collected from the islands in 2022. After plating the samples on marine agar or Reasoner's 2A, and incubating aerobically, approximately 1,200 bacterial strains were isolated and identified using 16S rRNA gene sequences. A total of 10 strains showed ≥98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the bacterial species that were validly published but not reported in Korea. The unrecorded bacterial strains belong to three phyla, five classes, 10 orders, 10 families, and 10 genera, which are assigned to Sphingomonas, Falsirhodobacter and Asticcacaulis of the class Alphaproteobacteria; Colwellia and Halomonas of the class Gammaproteobacteria; Chitinophaga of the class Chitinophagia; Chryseobacterium of the class Flavobacteriia; Microlunatus, Zhihengliuella, and Streptomyces of the class Actinomycetia. The details of the unreported species including Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic position are also provided in the description of the strains.

During an investigation into the indigenous prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, a total of five bacterial strains were isolated from various environments in Korea. The isolated bacterial strains were identified by analyzing their 16S rRNA gene sequences, and those with a minimum of 98.7% sequence similarity with known bacterial species but not reported in Korea were designated as unrecorded species. These isolates were assigned to three phyla, five orders, five families, and five different genera. The isolates were identified as Cumulibacter manganitolerans (99.1%) and Myolicibacterium tusciae (98.7%) of the class Actinomycetes; Bacillus marasmi (99.9%) of the class Bacilli; and Novosphingobium mathurense (100%) and Microvirga ossetica (98.8%) of the class Alphaproteobacteria. Gram reaction, colony and cellular morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic position of theses isolates are also described.
