Various type of in-situ and laboratary tests were performed in order to evaluate the stiffness of sedimentary soft rock. In triaxial compression tests of sedimentary soft rocks, axial strains from the axial displacement of the loading piston or specimen cap conventionally were considerably larger than those measured. tocally on the lateral surfaces of specimen, due to the bedding errors at the top and bottom ends of a specimen. A local deformation transducer was used to measure axial strains free from the bedding error ranging from 0.001% to about 1%. In ultra-sonic wave tests, the elastic modulus of unconfined spec imens was smaller than that of confined specimens, due probably to microfracks. Young's modulus Ed from ultra-sonic wave tests and those at small local strains from triaxial tests were similar, both of which agreed very well with Young's modulus Er from field shear wave velocities. Young'a modulus from the field behaviour was virtually similar to that obtained by reducing Er based on the strain level-dependency of stiffness evaluated by the triaxial tests.

Dynamic shear modulus of the compacted clayey soil was determined by the resonant column test to study the parametric effects of confining pressure, shear strain amplitude, molding water content, compaction energy, void ratio and the degree of saturation. The effect of each of these parameters on the dynamic shear modulus found to be significant and can be explained in terms of the changes in soil by compaction. Dynamic shear modulus of the compacted soil is increased significantly by compaction and compaction at the dry side of the optimum moisture content is much more effective. It is also found that the dynamic shear modulus showes a good correlation to the static shear strength of the compacted soil. Therefore the dynamic shear modulus of the compacted soil for a certain confining pressure may be obtained ea8i1y from the unconfined compression strength.
Deformational characteristics of subbase materials are important parameters in the mechanistic design of pavement. The subbase materials are mostly unbound granular materials in Korea, and seven representative subbase materials were collected for testing from the pavement construction sites. To evaluate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, RC/TS, TX and FF-RC tests were performed. The effects of various variables on modulus were studied. The variation in the modulus with number of loading cycles and loading frequency are very small and can be ignored in a practical sense. The modulus of subbase materials were significantly affected by confining pressure and strain level. The representative modulus reduction curve and constitutive models for Korean subbase materials were suggested.
Considering the effects of confining pressure, initial shear stress, cyclic stress ratio and number of loading cycles, cyclic triaxial tests are carried out to clarify the soil dynamic properties such as shear modulus and value of material damping of clay under undrained cyclic loading conditions. The results show that no obvious dependency on initial shear stress and effective confining stress are recognized in the shear modulus and damping ratio plotted versus strain. However, the shear modulus decreases and the damping ratio increases with increasing axial strain. When compared with others, it is also revealed that the shear moduli are distributed within the range curves obtained using empirical equations derived by Marcuson et al. (3) and Kokusho et al. (4), and damping ratios are distributed between the curves obtained by Kokusho et al. (4) and Ishihara et al. (9).

According to the seismic design criteria for structural buildings in Korea, the ground is classified into 5 types based on the average shear wave velocity measured from elastic wave tests on site and seismic load applied to the structure is estimated. However, elastic wave tests in site, however, on the engineering fill, cannot be performed during the construction period. Therefore, to evaluate shear wave velocity considering field conditions, resonant column (RC) and torsional shear (TS) tests are performed and compared with various elastic wave test results. As a result, if confining pressure for the tests using engineering fill are considered properly, we can obtain similar results comparing with those of elastic wave tests. In addition, by considering the effect of maximum shear modulus and confining pressure by RC/TS tests, n values shows typical values ranging from 0.434 to 0.561 so that utilization of RC/TS tests can be useful to infer shear modulus in field.
The effects of external restraint on the thermal stresses i n mass concrete are
investigated through a series of parametric study. Two major factors affecting the degree
of external restraint such as the ratio of length to height of the placed structure (L/H)
and the elastic modulus of base structure ($E_r$) are employed as the parameters in a
condition which a placing height H is 1.0m. Various conditions of I,/H and E, are
analysed by a FEM program and the relationship between these two parameters is
examined.
The shape of stress distribution due to the external restraint is shown as linearity on
the height direction of the section, and is influenced by L/H, $E_r$, and strength
development of placed concrete.
The external restraint can be devided by two part. One is an axial restraint and the
other is a flexural restraint. When the level of external restraint is low, the structure
behavior is mainly governed by flexural restraint, otherwise it is dependent on axial
restraint. Comparing the calculated stress by the method of the ACI 207 committee with
a finite element analysis, the fbrmer overestimates the external restraint stress when
the degree of external restraint is weak, and underestimates when it is strong.
The dynamic properties of soils are affected by parameters like, gradation characteristics, void ratio, confining pressure, etc. . This study mainly investigated experimentally the effect of gradation on the dynamic properties of sands with the effect of void ratio and confining pressure. Test results showed that shear modulus/damping ratio was increased/decreased with the decrease of void ratio and with the increase of confining pressure. When the fine content increased, shear modulus/damping ratio was decreased/increased. This study explained this phenomenon by the concept of the "effective number of contacts" and the "dead space".ot;dead space".uot;.

In this study, it is investigated the modified modulus of elasticity of the reinforced concrete columns including the longitudinal reinforcing steels as well as the confinement effect of the core concrete due to the transverse reinforced steel through the literature reviews. Equations are derived in order to evaluate the modified modulus of elasticity for the reinforced compressive concrete including the confinement effect. The finite element analysis for the 20 story reinforced concrete building is undertaken as a case study depending on the steel ratio and modulus of elasticity, and the analysis results are discussed.

This paper investigated the accuracy of the current design formulae for the elastic buckling strength of web-tapered I-beams in AISC-LRFD specification. The basic concept is to replace a tapered beam by an equivalent prismatic beam with a different length, but with a cross section identical to that of the smaller end of the tapered beam. The modification factor, B, is used to account for the stress gradient within the unbraced length and the lateral restraining effects offered by the adjacent segments. The modification factor(B) suggested in AISC-LRFD specification was compared with the finite element method(FEM) results. This paper presented a redefined method to calculate the modification factor(B).
In this study, relationships between CBR values tested by Korean Standards (KS CBR) and the elastic moduli from CU compression tests are developed for the subgrade soils. Triaxial compression and KS CBR tests are carried out on five types of samples from 15 points in Korean ezpressways. Triaxial compression tests are performed under 3 types of coifining pressures to generalize the CBR -elastic modulus relationship as functions of confining pressured and mean principal stresses. From the regression analyses of experimental results, equations for relationships between the KS CBR and elastic moduli of roadbed Boils are proposed. An equation for the relation- ship between the KS CBR and the maximum dry density of roadbed soil is also proposed.
