An Analysis of Science Writing by High School Students through the Argumentation Structure Instruction: Focus on Writing tasks Based on Genres of Science Writing (논증 구조 교육을 통한 고등학교 학생들의 과학 글쓰기 분석: 과학 글쓰기 장르에 따른 글쓰기 과제를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the changes in structure and contents of different functional genre of science writing during high school using the argumentation structure. For this thesis, seven students of a girls' high school in the national capital region took the argumentation structure instruction for 40 hours for a month. As a result, considerable changes had occurred amid the Explanation genre, the Experiment-recount genre and the Exposition genre. In the Explanation genre and the Experiment-recount genre, noticeable progress had been made in the usage of the argumentation elements and scientific concepts and knowledge evolved in a more rarified and detailed manner. In the Exposition genre, argumentation structure had changed from the simple argumentation structure to the subordination or the multiplex argumentation structure. Simultaneously, it was affirmed that the types and number of the argumentation elements increased significantly along with enlargement of respective scientific concepts and knowledge. Hence, this implies students can determine their understanding of scientific facts and contents during the progress of developing the argumentation structure. It is necessary that students take the well-organized argumentation structure instruction.

A Study on freshmen's achievements for grade point average among college entrance types in natural science or engineering (입시전형별 이공계 신입생의 대학수학 성취도 비교 분석 - 2012년 M 대학교 이공계 신입생을 중심으로 -)

  • In this paper, we analyzed the freshmen's achievements on general mathematics their GPA based on 'basic mathematics diagonal test score' among college entrance types in natural science or engineering. Also, we studied the achievements of students who were not passed the 'Basic Mathematics Diagonal Test (BMDT)' and had to take supplementary lessons to improve their mathematics abilities four times a week during the first semester of academic year 2012 in Mokpo National University. We found the followings; first, freshmen were accepted by the university through the regular admission have a higher level of academic achievement compared other type admission. Second, freshmen's academic achievement in the first semester has significant meaningful effect on their academic achievement in the second semester. Finally, there are correlations between achievements of general mathematics and a curriculum of freshmen who were passed test after taking supplementary lessons.

Analysis of Learning Effectiveness of an Arts-energy Convergence Extracurricular Program using the Kirkpatrick Model (Kirkpatrick 모형을 적용한 예술-에너지 융합 비교과 프로그램의 학습 효과성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of arts-engineering interdisciplinary education for improving creativity-convergence thinking. Using response data from 263 participants who attended an arts-energy extracurricular program at K University, we applied Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Model for analysis, and used Excel 2018, SPSS 25.0, and Process macro 4.0 software programs. The main findings are as following: (a) Overall means for STEP1: program satisfaction (M=4.43), STEP2: understanding of the program (M=4.52), STEP3: increased interest in energy (M=4.26), and STEP4: expansion of creativity-convergence thinking (M=4.41) were high, indicating effective learning outcomes. (b) While STEP1 did not differ significantly, males showed significantly higher in STEP2 and STEP3 compared to females. Additionally, males and STEM learners was significantly higher in STEP4 than non-STEM learners. (c) STEP1 had a positive effect on STEP2, and STEP3 had a positive effect on STEP4, but STEP2 did not have an effect on STEP3, failing to support the assumption of serial causality in Kirkpatrick's model. STEP1, STEP2, and STEP3 had positive effects on STEP4 directly. STEP2 or STEP3 mediated the relationships between STEP1 and STEP4 respectively. However, STEP2 and STEP3 did not serially mediate the relationships between STEP1 and STEP4. Based on these findings, discussions were held, and implications for academia and practice in the fields of engineering and science education were provided.

The E-Learning for Practice Training Using Augmented Reality in the College Education (증강현실을 이용한 대학 e-Learning 실습교육)

  • The university e-learning classes give a major focused on practical training in the art and design field are opened such as theory classes. The cyber universities that fully gives on-line classes even open as theory classes. They speak about difficulty and limitation of operating cyber class with practice. So, many of them organize off-line special lecture at the classroom in weekend. In the reason of studying that has the constraints of time and space, the student wastage rates in cyber universities are going higher. This research focused on giving an efficient e-learning practice environment in college e-learning courses, and operated scholastic achievement test between the augmented reality(AR) based practice education and the existing classroom based practice education. The subjects of study were totally 84 people who are the freshmen of the design department in the two-year diploma course college. They were divided 3 groups which one was treated AR based practice e-learning and two others groups were existing classroom based practice. Each of the group took the same treated lecture during 7 weeks. The first of the outcome was the AR based practice e-learning was more effective than existing classroom based practice on the side of scholastic achievement. The second, the AR based practice e-learning aroused increasing in the interest in class on the side of attribute factors. The third, the AR based practice e-learning group made higher level of studying immersion than others. In consideration of this experiment was processed in the regular college academic course, the finding by this research shows AR based major practice e-learning is an alternative lecturing strategy what can be supplemented existing classroom based academic teaching methods.

The User Satisfaction Analyses for the Multimedia Room of Academic Libraries in the Northeast Seoul (대학도서관 멀티미디어실에 대한 이용자 만족도 분석 - 서울동북부사립대학교도서관을 중심으로 -)

  • While a number of studies have been conducted on the multimedia rooms in academic libraries, they have limitations both in the research scope and in the data analysis methods. The principal limitations are: (1) Lack of investigation on the variation in user satisfaction by users' major areas and utilization behaviors; (2) Insufficiency of examining the variation in user satisfaction with diverse library areas; (3) Lack of consideration of service providers' opinions. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the follows: (1) investigating how users' major fields and utilization behaviors affect user satisfaction; (2) determining the relationships between the area satisfaction factors and satisfaction in general; and (3) discovering what to improve, as indicated by users and service providers. On the basis of the results, the suggestions relate to the improvements of the followings: (1) the existing system; (2) equipments and facilities; (3) resources; (4) user education; and (5) administrative and legal support.

Factors Affecting the Learning Flow of Health Science Students Taking Online Classes due to COVID-19 (코로나 19 (COVID-19)로 인해 온라인 전공 수업을 경험한 보건계열 대학생의 학습몰입에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • This study investigates the relationships among academic stress, learning satisfaction, and learning flow of the health science college students who take online classes in college. The subjects were 129 students and the data were collected from November 15th, 2020 to December 22th, 2020 using a self-report structured questionnaire. The data analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression. As a result of this study, academic stress showed a negative correlation between learning satisfaction (r=.-78, p<.001) and learning flow (r=.-70, p<.001). And learning satisfaction showed a positive correlation between learning flow (r=.71, p<.001). In the results of multiple regression analysis, factors influencing the learning flow of students were amount of assignments in online classes, number of online practice courses completed in the last semester, academic stress, and learning satisfaction. All of these variables together explained 59.0%. Therefore, in order to increase learning flow in online classes, strategies to reduce academic stress and development of various educational programs are required.

Investigations on Public Perception of Science Articles in the Mass Media and Understanding of Scientific Terms Used in High Frequency in Science Articles (대중매체의 과학기사에 대한 대중들의 인식과 고빈도로 사용되는 과학용어에 대한 이해도 조사)

  • In order to find out whether the traditional mass media in our society are sufficiently functioning as a vehicle of providing scientific information to the public outside the school education, public perception of science articles in mass media and scientific terms used in high frequency in science articles have been examined. To investigate the public perception on science articles, a questionnaire was constructed about the usefulness, importance, access frequency, and understanding of science articles. The questionnaires were conducted in areas with high flow populations such as train stations or subway stations. A total of 425 responses were used for analysis. In order to extract high frequency scientific terms used in science articles, two television companies and two newspapers were designated as target media, and their texts on science articles reported over the last 17 years were collected to investigate the frequency of scientific terms used. Based on the frequency, we conducted the self-report comprehension test for the top 100 scientific terms. The results of this study show that the public in our society has relatively high perception of the importance and usefulness of science articles, however, reading and understanding the articles seems to be somewhat difficult. In addition, the scientific terminology used in science articles has a high degree of comprehension for those of higher education, natural sciences majors, and men. In addition, scientific terms with high understanding degree were characterized according to gender, age, educational background, and field of major.

A Study on the Intention to Use of the AI-related Educational Content Recommendation System in the University Library: Focusing on the Perceptions of University Students and Librarians (대학도서관 인공지능 관련 교육콘텐츠 추천 시스템 사용의도에 관한 연구 - 대학생과 사서의 인식을 중심으로 -)

  • The understanding and capability to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) incorporated technology has become a required basic skillset for the people living in today's information age, and various members of the university have also increasingly become aware of the need for AI education. Amidst such shifting societal demands, both domestic and international university libraries have recognized the users' need for educational content centered on AI, but a user-centered service that aims to provide personalized recommendations of digital AI educational content is yet to become available. It is critical while the demand for AI education amongst university students is progressively growing that university libraries acquire a clear understanding of user intention towards an AI educational content recommender system and the potential factors contributing to its success. This study intended to ascertain the factors affecting acceptance of such system, using the Extended Technology Acceptance Model with added variables - innovativeness, self-efficacy, social influence, system quality and task-technology fit - in addition to perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and intention to use. Quantitative research was conducted via online research surveys for university students, and quantitative research was conducted through written interviews of university librarians. Results show that all groups, regardless of gender, year, or major, have the intention to use the AI-related Educational Content Recommendation System, with the task suitability factor being the most dominant variant to affect use intention. University librarians have also expressed agreement about the necessity of the recommendation system, and presented budget and content quality issues as realistic restrictions of the aforementioned system.

Education Plan of Artificial Intelligence Programming using Raspberry Pi for Computer Major Students of Industrial Specialized High Schools (공업계 특성화고등학교 컴퓨터 전공 학생들을 위한 라즈베리파이 활용 인공지능 프로그래밍 교육 방안)

  • In this study, we proposed a plan to educate computer students at industrial specialized high schools about artificial intelligence programming using Raspberry Pi. To create an educational program, we received advice from experts working in schools and industries, analyzed existing research and requirements, designed weekly learning plans, developed teaching materials, and conducted classes. Due to the small number of research subjects, interviews were conducted with students, and the results of the teacher's diary were also presented to derive qualitative research results. The main interview results show that although it is true that interest in the field of artificial intelligence has increased through the class, many responded that the learning content is still difficult. The teacher's diary mainly included information about the latest trends in the industry that informatics and computer teachers should not miss out on. We hope that this study will provide an opportunity to meet the needs of the industry by increasing the proportion of artificial intelligence programming in industrial specialized high schools.

Elementary school students' metaphors of angle concepts (초등학생의 각 개념 형성에 나타난 수학적 은유)

  • This study used metaphors as a analysis tool to investigate elementary school students' formation and development of angle concepts. For this purpose, the students were asked to write words associated with angle, right angle, acute angle and obtuse angle and to explain why. In case of angle and right angle, responses of 268 students from 3rd to 6th graders were analyzed and for acute angle and obtuse angle, those of 192 students from 4th to 6th graders were examined. As the results of categorizing the metaphors, they can be classified into categories such as; (1) qualitative aspects: 'things metaphor', 'personality metaphor', 'emotions metaphor' etc., (2) quantitative aspects: 'motions metaphor', 'changes metaphor', 'emotions metaphor' etc., and (3) relational aspects: 'shape relations metaphor.' The metaphoric expressions were prominent in 'qualitative aspects' associated with shapes. As for the other aspects, 'quantitative aspect'- the size of angles and the amount of spread and 'relational aspects' - elements of angle and relationship with another shapes, the frequency increses were shown to as grade levels were up. In case of right angle and acute angle, 'qualitative aspects' associated with shapes were outstanding and the frequency of the metaphoric expressions of obtuse angle was distributed similarly in three aspects. As the figure strand and the measurement strand are integrated to an strand in the 2022 revised curriculum, we need more discussion of multifaced aspects of angle and the learning sequences in the 'figure and measurement' strand.
