The Effects of Teaching Based on a Learning-communities Approach to Mathematics in Middle School (중학교 1학년 수학교실에서의 배움공동체 교수·학습 방법 효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the effects of teaching based on learning-communities approach to mathematics for 7th grade students. Two classes of 7th graders at two different middle schools in same city were selected as the experimental group and the control group respectively. Students in the experimental group learned mathematics in a learning-community while their counterparts in the control group received the traditional whole-class instruction employed in most schools. The results are as follows. Firstly, there was no statistically significant difference in mathematics achievement between the experimental group and the control group. Secondly, between the two groups, there were statistically significant differences in students' attitudes toward mathematics. Participants enjoyed the learning process itself by asking difficult questions to one another, sharing their ideas freely and figuring problems out for themselves. During these active participations, they displayed more confidence and interest in learning mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide useful information for teachers by analyzing mathematical communication emphasized through 'exploratory activity' and 'story corner' in elementary textbooks based on the revised curriculum. Two classrooms from the first grade and second grade respectively were observed and videotaped. Mathematical communication of each classroom was analyzed in terms of questioning, explaining, and the sources of mathematical ideas. The results showed that only one classroom focused on students' thinking processes and explored their ideas, whereas the other classrooms focused mainly on finding answer. Particularly, this tendency often appeared when implementing 'story corner' than 'exploratory activity'. The reason for this was inferred that teachers were not familiar with teaching mathematics in stories and that teachers' manual did not include concrete questions and students' expected responses. This paper included implications on how to promote mathematical communication specifically in lower grades in elementary school.

Effects of Mathematical Justification on Problem Solving and Communication (수학적 정당화가 문제 해결과 의사소통에 미치는 영향)

  • Mathematical justification is the process through which one's claim is validated to be true based on proper and trustworthy data. But it serves as a catalyst to facilitate mathematical discussions and communicative interactions among students in mathematics classrooms. This study is designed to investigate the effects of mathematical justification on students' problem-solving and communicative processes occurred in a mathematics classroom. In order to fulfill the purpose of this study, mathematical problem-solving classes were conducted. Mathematical justification processes and communicative interactions recorded in problem understanding activity, individual student inquiry, small and whole group discussions are analyzed. Based on the analysis outcomes, the students who participated in mathematical justification activities are more likely to find out various problem-solving strategies, to develop efficient communicative skills, and to use effective representations. In addition, mathematical justification can be used as an evaluation method to test a student's mathematical understanding as well as a teaching method to help develop constructive social interactions and positive classroom atmosphere among students. The results of this study would contribute to strengthening a body of research studying the importance of teaching students mathematical justification in mathematics classrooms.

Survival Rates of Class II Restoration in Primary Molar with Flowable Resin Composite (유동성 복합레진을 이용한 유구치 II급 수복의 생존율)

  • The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the survival rate by comparing Class II restoration using flowable resin composite with stainless steel crown in primary molars. Electronic medical records and radiographs of 1,504 primary molars with proximal caries of 590 patients from June 2015 to August 2019 were analyzed. With the collected data, survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The 1-year survival rate of flowable resin composite in the primary molar was 98.5%, 3-year survival rate was 87.7%, and mean survival time was 39 months. There was no statistically significant difference between flowable resin composite and stainless steel crown (p = 0.896). Within the limits of this study, Class II restoration using flowable resin composite can be considered a promising option for the treatment of proximal caries in primary molars.

Treatment of a tooth with severe periodontal involvement using intentional replantation: case report (중도 치주염에 이환된 치아의 보존을 위한 의도적 재식술을 통한 치료: 증례보고)

  • Although intentional replantation is frequently used as a treatment modality for endodontic problems, severe periodontal involvement has usually been regarded as a contraindication. However, there are some studies suggesting that intentional replantation could be a successful treatment alternative for periodontally involved teeth. This paper reports the treatment of a tooth with severe periodontal involvement using intentional replantation. The tooth, which had had root canal therapy due to endodontic-periodontal combined lesion but showed extensive bone loss, was gently extracted and replanted after thorough debridement of the root surface. By intentional replantation, a tooth with severe periodontal involvement in this case could be preserved, without extraction, over the course of a 3-year follow-up period.

The Effects of the Gender Role Identity and Gender Stereotypes on the Prejudice Against Male Nurses of Hospital Workers (병원 종사자의 성 역할 정체감과 성 고정관념이 남자간호사에 대한 편견에 미치는 영향)

  • As more and more males are participating in the female dominated nursing profession in Korea, they are facing a number of discriminations such as department assignment on the job because of male gender stereotype. The purpose of this study is to examine hospital workers's gender role identity, gender stereotype, and the relationship between those attitudes and gender prejudice against male nurses. The results showed that the androgynous group had lower gender stereotypes and lower prejudice against male nurses than those of the other groups. Hospital workers had a strong tendency to believe that male nurses should work mainly in special departments such as emergency rooms, intensive care units, operating rooms and they think that the male nurses are not fit for caring patients because of the patients' unfamiliarity with male nurses. Gender stereotypes were positively correlated to prejudice against male nurses. Therefore, hospitals should consider developing a detailed plan to encourage a culture of gender equality by tackling the existing prejudice against male nurses so that male nurses can get the same opportunities as female counterparts in terms of department assignment and job promotion.

A Review Study on Qigong Interventions for Performance Enhancement in Korean Journal Articles: A Preliminary Study for Developing Qigong Therapy for Elite Athletes (수행능력 향상을 위한 국내 기공 연구 고찰: 스포츠 현장에 적용 가능한 기공 프로그램 개발을 위한 예비 연구)

  • Objectives: To investigate the research trends of qigong interventions to make influence on performance enhancement. Methods: Korean databases were searched for papers related to studies of qigong interventions to assist subjects perform better. Results: Twelve articles published in Korean Journals from 2000 to 2017 were reviewed. Among the retrieved papers, eight were applied with breathing exercises, including Dan-jeon breathing training, one applied with brain breathing meditation with DoIn exercise, one applied with qigong meditation, one applied with qi-training, and one applied with brain breathing training. RoBANS was used for assessment. The quality of selected articles was generally low. 10 of the 12 articles on qigong reported that experimental group showed statistically significant increase of performance enhancement both directly and indirectly. Conclusions: Reviewing 12 articles, this study established that qigong interventions might be beneficial for enhancing performance especially in sports. However, more scientifically designed study on qigong therapy are needed to prove the efficacy and effectiveness.

A Study on Position of the Mental Foramen in Children Using Panorama (파노라마를 이용한 어린이의 이공 위치에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of the position of the mental foramen according to age by using panorama of children with mixed and early permanent dentition. 180 panorama of 6 to 13-year-old boys and girls were analyzed and PiView(Infinitt, Korea) program was used. The horizontal position of the mental foramen was evaluated by the relative position of the teeth. The vertical position of the mental foramen was evaluated by the ratios between the distance from the center of the mental foramen to the inferior border of the mandible and the distance from to the alveolar crest to the inferior border of the mandible. The mental foramen was horizontally located in the anterior aspect of the second primary molar(premolar), and vertically slight below the half of mandibular body. As the age increased, it moved to the posterior and the downward and showed a significant correlation with age.

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a successful procedure independently by patient selection, timing of surgery, surgical technique, choice of graft, and fixation methods. Among these factors, graft selection and fixation methods might be the most critical yet controversial questions for surgeons. Although recent studies showed that grafts have advantages and drawbacks, there is still no ideal graft. Similarly, many fixation methods of femoral and tibial tunnels have been proposed over the last few decades, with no clear superiority of one technique over another. Surgeons should be familiar with a variety of grafts, fixation techniques, and their specific associated surgical procedures as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. Therefore, this article summarizes the current literature and discusses the current state of graft selection and fixation methods in the treatment of an ACL injury.

Assessment of Emergency Remote Teaching for Clinical Interview Skills due to COVID-19: Its Implication for Future Online Medical Education (코로나19로 인한 일개 의과 대학의 비대면 의료 면담 실습수업 사례 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to share and assess the experiences of the emergency remote teaching method adopted for the medical communication course at a medical school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The standardized patients hired for this 'Emergency Remote Teaching (hereafter ERT)' course said that students' interactions with them were less enthusiastic and less realistic, However, in the one-on-one virtual practice, the students seemed to be more focused than in the existing face to face practice. There were no differences in the unit practice test scores between ERT and the face-to-face course while in the face-to-face final exam, the test scores of FTF students were statistically higher than those of the ERT students, which might have resulted from the different methodologies of teaching. Further research on the virtual medical communication course is necessary to prepare medical students for the adoption of the telemedicine which could be accelerated in the near future.
