  • The development of teacher's professionalism through teacher education is a key element in the improvement of school education. However, there has been criticism that the mathematics teacher education in Korea do not provide given enough opportunities for the classroom experience during preservice teacher education period. For development of inservice mathematics teachers and preservice teachers' teaching professionalism, this study develops a research community for mathematics classroom consisting of experts, inservice mathematics teachers, and preservice teachers. And the study explores the possibilities of the model as an educational space for inservice teachers and preservice teachers by participating in a series of courses such as task development and revision, and observation and analysis of classes. As results, inservice teachers and preservice teachers were able to enhance the practical experience and understanding necessary for the class, and they were also positively influenced in teacher efficacy and view of teaching on the model. Based on this, we suggest the possibility of the model as a teacher education system.

  • In this study, the educational effect was investigated by providing a teaching program so that pre-service chemistry teachers could apply model ignorance education to teacher training practice. The teaching program was constructed in consideration of the sensemaking concept proposed in the study of Odden & Russ and the process of teacher sensemaking proposed by Asli et al. The subjects of this study were 23 pre-service teachers in the 4th year of chemistry education department at a teacher training university in the central region of Korea. In order to form a sensemaking for the model's ignorance education, the teaching program consisted of four stages; the initial idea generation stage, cognition of model's ignorance stage in a inconsistent situation, the lesson strategy construction stage for model ignorance education, and lesson plan & practice stage during teacher training practice. In the first stage of this program, pre-service teachers' initial ideas about the Arrhenius model and Bronsted-Lowry model of acid-base reaction, and the electron transfer model of the oxidation-reduction reaction were investigated. In the second stage, inconsistant situation that cannot be explained by the knowledge of model was presented to recognize the ignorance of the model. The third stage was to develop the teaching ability of model's ignorance through textbook analysis and lesson strategy composition activities. As a final stage, during the teacher training practice, the pre-service teachers were asked to plan and practice the implementation of the model's ignorance education. Through the teaching program to form a sensemaking for ignorance education of the models, pre-service teachers had come to recognize the ignorance of the model, acquired ability to organize and execute lesson strategies reflecting model ignorance, and acquired recognition of the educational value and necessity of teaching the ignorance of models.

  • This study developed and applied the teacher education model and its principles for science classes using Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) content and analyzed preservice elementary teachers' feedback on the teacher education model and the changes in their perceptions as to the use of VR/AR content. First, existing Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) teacher education models and prior studies on the use of the VR/AR contents were reviewed to derive the teacher education model to cultivate the VR/AR-TPACK and set the key principles for each of its stages. The developed teacher education model has five stages: exploration, mapping, collaborative design, practice, and reflection. Second, to examine the appropriateness of the model's five stages and principles, we applied it within the regular course of instruction at the university of education, which was attended by 25 preservice elementary teachers. This study collected data from surveys on the perception of the usage of VR/AR contents before and after the course, as well as the group lesson plans prepared by the preservice teachers, and their feedback on the teacher education model. The feedback on the teacher education model and the survey conducted by the preservice teachers before and after the course were analyzed through open coding and categorization. As a result, most preservice teachers expressed positive opinions about the activities and experiences at each stage of the implementation of the teacher education model. Perceptions related to the usage of the VR/AR content changed in three aspects: first, the vague positive perception of the VR/AR content has changed to a positive perception based on specific educational affordance. Second, they recognized the need for preparedness by anticipating potential problems associated with the use of the VR/AR content. Third, they came to view the VR/AR contents as a useful instructional resource that the teachers could use. Based on these results, we discussed the implications for the VR/AR-TPACK teacher education model and assessed the limitations of the research.

  • Science inquiry has long been emphasized in Korean science education. Scientific modeling is one of key practices in science inquiry with a potential to provide students with opportunities to develop their own explanations and knowledge thereafter. The purpose of this study is to investigate teacher's understanding of models in science and science teaching. A professional development program on Models (PDM) was developed and refined through three times of implementation while teachers' conceptions of models and modeling were examined. A total of 29 elementary and secondary teachers participated in this study. A survey based on model use of scientists in the history of science was developed and used to collect data and audio recordings of discussions among teachers and artifacts produced by the teachers during PDM were also collected. Three ways of ontological and two ways of epistemological understanding of models and modeling were found in teachers' ideas. After PDM, a quarter of the teachers changed their ontological understanding whereas very few changed their epistemological understanding. In contrast, more than two thirds of the teachers deepened and extended their ideas about using models and modeling in teaching. There were no clear relationships between teachers' understanding of models and ways and ideas about using models in science teaching. However, teachers' perceptions of school conditions were found to mediate their intention to use models in science teaching. The findings indicate possible approaches to professional development program content design and further research.

  • This introductory review study sought to conceptualize elementary school teachers' pedagogical content knowledge in science teaching (science PCK) by reinterpreting 11 science PCK research papers published in the Korean Journal Database from 2012 to 2023 based on the synthesized perspective of the model of teacher professional knowledge and skill (Consensus Model) proposed at the first PCK Summit in 2012 and the Revised Consensus Model (RCM) proposed at the second PCK Summit in 2016. Elementary teachers' science PCK was mainly analyzed based on Magnusson et al.'s (1999) PCK elements and described as the form of enacted PCK or personal PCK at the subject or discipline level. Personal PCK studies, which involved emotional factors, included the features of collective PCK from the RCM perspective. It was inferred that elementary school teachers' science PCK needs to be conceptualized by comprehensively considering the enacted PCK through individual teacher experiences and the collective PCK and personal PCK defined by experts.

  • In this study, we analyzed the descriptions of the electron movement model and the oxidation number change model presented in the 2009 revised curriculum and textbooks. We also investigated chemistry education major teachers' conceptions of limitations of each model. The electron movement model and oxidation number change model were presented in the curriculum and the textbooks. However, hybrid model was also presented which fail to grasp the limitation of each model. The hybrid model explains redox reactions of covalent bond compounds by electron movement model or even if it explains redox reactions by oxidation number change model, this explanations have the problem of confusing the virtual electron movement with the actual electron movement. A questionnaire and interviews were conducted to investigate chemistry education major teachers' perceptions of redox reactions. As results, many teachers did not recognize the limitations of each model and had difficulties to distinguish redox reactions from acid-base reactions because of the hybrid model.
