  • The main purpose of STEM education is to understand methods of inquiry in each discipline to develop convergent problem solving skills. To do this, we must first understand the problem-solving process that is regarded as an essential component of each discipline. The purposes of this study is to understand the relationship between the problem solving in science (S), engineering (E), mathematics (M), and computational thinking (CT) based on the comparative analysis of problem solving processes in each SEM discipline. To do so, first, the problem solving process of each SEM and CT discipline is compared and analyzed, and their commonalities and differences are described. Next, we divided the CT into the instrumental and thinking skill aspects and describe how CT's problem solving process differs from SEM's. Finally we suggest a model to explain the relationship between SEM and CT problem solving process. This study shows how SEM and CT can be converged as a problem solving process.

  • The aims of this study are to investigate how Kepler found a scientific problem for the retinal image theory and how abductive reasoning was used in his theory development, and to find implications for teaching creativity in science class from his thinking processes in the scientific discovery. Through the analysis of the related literatures, it was found that Kepler's problem finding in his retinal image theory came from the critical analysis of contemporary theories of vision, based on his relevant knowledge of optics, as he formulated his own hypothesis to build a new theory in eye vision employing optical phenomenon in spherical lens, which is a kind of abductive reasoning. From the results, three suggestions are proposed, that: (a) in the development of creativity teaching material, the situations like Kepler's problem finding need to be included in the programs; (b) it should be taught that relevant scientific knowledge is important for problem finding and hypothesis formulating; and (c) the experience of successful problem solving by themselves could help them find new scientific problem(s).

Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident was used by concrete issue connected with SSI for this study. Twelve second-year students attending a university of education participated in the study, who were taking a class of science teacher preparation at that time that consists of the content of the elementary science education courses. The study revealed that all the pre-service elementary teachers recognized Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident and received such information through various medias. In particular, they were receiving more information about the Nuclear Power Plant Accident through the internet than any other media by using the internet a lot, and also gained additional information through the internet. However, despite the fact that they recognized Nuclear Power Plant Accident, they neither had much information about it nor had been interested in SSI such as the Nuclear Power Plant Accident. Moreover, they had been basically uneducated about SSI. Despite of having no interest in SSI such as Nuclear Power Plant Accident, the study revealed that the pre-service elementary teachers recognized that scientific problems such as Nuclear Power Plant Accident may affect a society closely. In addition, they together sympathized with the point that SSI education should be applied on the current education courses by identifying the problem in application. As the study revealed above, the application of SSI education to the formal education courses as well as more lively research on that subject is very important and urgent for boosting interest in science subjects and enlightening the nature of science that is one of the objectives of science education.

An analysis shows that the proportion of inquiry is the best high among the types of creativity-personality activities. Also it is organized for a various activities such as reading, writing and debate. As a result of analyzing creativity-personality activities regarding creative thinking and personality element, a variety of creative thinking and personality element was not composed. The creative thinking is primarily divergent thinking, convergent thinking and associative thinking appears in order. In addition, the caring of personality elements is the most, and then honesty, cooperation and responsibility appears in order. Thus, it is necessary to structure a variety of activities for edification of creativity-personality in high school science textbooks. As an analysis of creativity-personality activities regarding elements of the decision-making, the review process do not appear at all, and there are few decision points generally. Therefore, a rational decision making for the sake of edification should be provided with specific decision-making factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze science-gifted students' knowledge-generation processes by analyzing students' inquiry journal. As a result, first, science-gifted students showed various knowledge-generation processes, but they were limited to inductive thinking and abductive thinking, and their thinking processes were very simple. Second, most of the knowledge-generation processes of science gifted were simple, repetitive and diagrammatic processes because of observation and empirical situation of a limited scope. And a simple and repetitive diagram was generated by a simple variable selection and design, observation in limited scope, unbiased intervention by subjective thinking, and absence of exploration or finding errors. And they showed often a logical leap of reasoning.

  • In the creative problem solving processes, the core was to generate unique and various ideas. Thus, an assumption reversal thinking skill needed to be considered as a concrete method that could help students who have difficulties with generating ideas. In this study, we applied the assumption reversal thinking skill to university students and explored the characteristics of the idea generation process. On the basis of the results, we found that the assumption reversal thinking skill helped students generate new ideas, inducing their perspective changes. Therefore, we could ascertain the possibilities of the assumption reversal thinking skill as a thinking frame supporting students' idea generation. However, there is a need to develop methods for students to exclude prejudice by theoretical judgment, intervention of the value, and experience for fostering more effective assumption reversal thinking. Also, ways should be considered so that students would be able to cultivate task commitment and courage of implementing new ideas, bearing criticism from others.

  • Considering the importance of spatial thinking in the process of learning astronomy, it is necessary to educate pre-service teachers on teaching methods that consider spatial thinking from the teacher training program stage. Accordingly, after providing education on spatial thinking to pre-service science teachers, problems and improvement plans perceived by them were explored for the images and inquiry activities of astronomy textbook units. In this study, spatial thinking in the astronomical domain was defined as the amalgam of the concepts of space, representation tools, and reasoning processes. The juniors attending the University of Education in the metropolitan area were educated on spatial thinking for two weeks in October 2021. They were then asked to voluntarily select one of the astronomy units to analyze problems in the textbooks and present modification plans to address those problems. Finally, 33 cases presented by 22 pre-service science teachers were analyzed, and the results of the study were as follows. Pre-service teachers recognized the problems in textbooks in terms of the concepts of space and reasoning processes, and proposed improvement plans to supplement them. However, in some cases, even if pre-service teachers properly recognized a problem, the improvement plan was not appropriate, or they were not able to analyze the images or inquiry activities in terms of spatial thinking. This study is significant in that it shows that pre-service teachers have the potential to properly reorganize and revise textbooks by participating in teacher training programs on spatial thinking. Furthermore, based on the results of this study, the direction of the teacher training program concerning spatial thinking was discussed.
