Uses of Science Fiction Movie Education Materials for the Middle School Female Students to Enhance Their Interests in Science (여학생의 과학에 대한 관심 고취를 위한 공상과학영화 교육매체의 활용)

  • These days effective science education programs are required for girls to encourage them to pursue their career in science and engineering areas. This paper presents the preliminary results of an analysis performed to measure the effectiveness of a middle school education program, in which a science fiction movie as a multimedia educational material is shown to students and afterward discussion and review process for the scientific subjects included in the movie are given to them. The analysis is based on a study of students' responses on surveys performed after showing the science fiction movies during a science camp and a regular school class. The survey results of female students are compared with those of male students. The results indicate that the education program using science fiction movies could be more effective to female students than to male students in motivating and enhancing their interest in scientific subjects. A preliminary guide and afterward review and discussion on the scientific contents dealt in the movie turned out to be helpful to enhance the effectiveness of this science education program.

Relation between Science and Technology (과학과 기술의 관계)

  • In this paper, I advocate interactive model which treats science and technology as distinguishable subcultures each with their own bodies of lore and competence against the traditonal hierachical model which treats technology as applied science. For engineering science which is a component in technology as knowledge, I count design as the core part of engineering and discuss the characteristic of engineering design. I also critically assess the models of technological knowledge change, Khunian model and variation-selection model to understand the relation between science and technology. I propose a model that science and technology interaction is mediated interaction. I only outline the plausibility of this model. Industrial research is a modern form of the interaction between science and technology. I discuss Reich who focused on the broad background of industrial research and MeyerThurow who has microperspective in industrial research. The conclusion I draw from the discussion, is that through industiral research, the science-technology interaction become more structured and autonomous, and the scientists and engineers become simply patrs of the structure of industrial research rather than the personal subject.

The Effects of Ethical Education in Science Classes on Middle School Students' Attitude toward Science (과학의 윤리적 특성교육이 중학생들의 과학과 관련된 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of teaching science ethical issues relevant to the middle school science curriculum. The experimental subjects were 132 second grade middle school students in Seoul, who were divided into two groups without any statistical differences. The results of this study indicated that teaching ethical issues in science had a positive influence on students' attitudes toward science and fostered a positive impression of science education. Also, the students showed a positive attitude in dealing with ethical problems in science and technology. Regardless, the results of this study suggest that ethical education in science classes is effective in increasing positive attitude toward science and the ability of the students in addressing and resolving ethical problems in science and technology. As such, we strongly recommend that the science curriculum for middle school students be changed to integrate ethical issues in the science class.

EVIDENCE-BASED PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY : CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS (근거중심 소아치과학의 개념과 응용)

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the concept of the evidence-based pediatric dentistry and to investigate the application methods of it. The definition of the evidence-based pediatric dentistry was suggested as 'the integration of the best scientific research evidence with the professional expertise of pediatric dentist and the value of pediatric patients and their caregivers in dental practice for the child and adolescent'. The methods of practising evidence-based pediatric dentistry were investigated, the recent conclusions of the evidence-based pediatric dentistry were summarized by topics, the research methods of systemic review and clinical practice guidlines were analyzed, and the individual research methods as randomized controlled trials were investigated. The author proposed increasing the understanding and consensus of the necessity of evidence-based pediatric dentistry, education about the evidence-based pediatric dentistry, computerization of all published articles of Korean pediatrtic dentistry, continuing research and popularization of systemic research and clinical practice guidlines, production of Korea's own evidences of pediatric dentistry, and the improvement of soical environment of pediatric practice.

Suggesting a Model of Science Competency and Applying it to Science Curriculum (과학 역량 모델의 제안과 과학 교육과정에의 적용)

  • Although the 2015 revised science curriculum has newly introduced core science competencies, there are a lot of confusions and difficulties at the school sites because the concept of competence is not clear. In this study, we conducted literature analysis to understand what constitutes the components of science competence and how the components are related. Based on this analysis, a model of science competency, composed of six factors (non-cognitive characteristics, knowledge, skill, context, performance, level) was suggested. In addition, we have explored ways to utilize this science competency model to re-write the achievement criteria of current science curriculum as science learning objectives expressed in the form of science competency. Finally, advantages and limits of the model are discussed and related further researches are suggested.

Five Voices about Science Month Festival (과학의 달 행사에 대한 다섯 목소리)

  • The Science Month Festival which is held in our schools provides students with more access to science to expand their science base. However current Science Month Festival is recognized as a pro forma event without it's educational ideal. For this reason, the Science Month Festival has been criticized. This study was aimed to reconsider Science Month Festival by straining at the voices of subjects which were connected to it directly or indirectly. The results showed that every subject didn't make public discourse which makes mutual connections dialectically. Therefore, the voices of dissatisfaction couldn't make alternative plans to solve the problems. Finally, we proposed transaction between private and public discourses in subjects for substance for the Science Month Festival.

Trend on Development of Polymeric Organosilicone Surfactants (고분자 유기실리콘 계면활성제의 개발 동향)

  • Silicone-based surfactants consist of a hydrophobic organosilicone group coupled to one or more hydrophilic polar groups, while the hydrophobic groups of hydrocarbon surfactants are hydrocarbons. Silicone surfactants have been widely used in many industrial fields starting from polyurethane foam to construction materials, cosmetics, paints & inks, agrochemicals, etc., because of their low surface tension, lubricity, spreading, water repellency and thermal and chemical stability. A wide range of silicone surfactant structures are required to provide the functional diversity for reflecting the necessities in the various applications. This review covers the basic properties and the synthetic schemes of polydimethylsiloxane and reactive polysiloxanes as hydrophobic siloxane backbones, the main reaction schemes, such as hydrosilylation reaction, for coupling reactive polysiloxanes to hydrophilic groups, and the synthetic schemes of the main polysiloxane surfactants including polyether-, ionic-, carbohydrate-type surfactants.

Effect of Ultraviolet Light on Survival and Pathogenicity of Entomopathogenic Nematodes against an Alternative Host Silk Worm, Bombyx mori (자외선이 곤충병원성선충의 생존과 대체기주 누에에 대한 병원성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to find a useful alternative herbivore system with which to study the effects of ultraviolet exposure on the pathogenicity and survival of Korean isolated entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis sp. 202 strain, Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan strain, Steinernema sp. 223 strain, S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain, S. glaseri Dongrae strain and S. longicaudum Nonsan strain). Pathogenicity of entomopathogenic nematodes against silkworm, Bombyx mori, differed depending on the nematode species and strain and instar of silkworm challenged. Steinernematidae were relatively more pathogenic to the 5th instar silkworms, whereas Heterorhabditidae were more pathogenic to the 1st instars. UV-C exposure was harmful to entomopathogenic nematodes. All nematodes were killed within 60 minutes of exposure of UV-C, and after 10 min of exposure they caused only 6.7% corrected mortality of silkworms. Silkworms were not infected when they were fed S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain treated mulberry leaves which were exposed to UV intensity of about $2.3mW/cm^2$ for 4 hours in the field. Pathogenicity of S. carpocapsae was not significantly reduced after 1 hour of exposure to $4.0mW/cm^2$ UV intensity on the mulberry leaves against silkworms.

The Comparison of the Science Gifted and Mathematics Gifted in Attitude Toward Science and Learning Motivations in Science of Elementary School Students (초등학교 과학영재학생과 수학영재학생의 과학에 대한 태도 및 과학학습동기 차이)

  • The purpose of this study is to survey and compare of the science gifted and the mathematics gifted students at elementary school's 171 students who live in the Seoul city, using Attitude Assessment Tool and Learning Motivation in Science. The analytical results of the collected data are presented as follow; Firstly, there was no difference between science gifted and mathematics gifted in the attitude, value, social meaning, and attitude toward science subject and learners mostly have a positive attitude toward science but, there was difference in the preference of the science gifted and mathematics gifted. Science gifted's preference toward science subject is higher than mathematics gifted students. Secondly, there was no difference in the attention, self-efficacy, and contentment in learning motivation in the science but, there was difference between science gifted and mathematics gifted in the relevance.

  • 현대 디자인 분야에는 건축이나 제품, 의복 등에까지 투명성이 디자인의 매우 중요한 요소로 활용되고 있다. 아름다우면서도 기능성과 견고함을 지닌 투명한 재료들이 과학기술의 발달에 힘입어 속속 개발되고 있으며, 또한 투명성 디자인은 현대 디자인의 트랜드인 즐거움과 유희 등을 표현하는 감성 트랜드와 잘 부합되기 때문이다. 본 연구는 이러한 시대의 흐름에 발맞추어 사용자들에게 재미와 즐거움의 가치를 감각적인 부분과 통합할 수 있는 디자인 개발에 목적을 두고, 20세기 후반부터 트랜드의 커다란 부분을 차지하고 있는 투명성을 좀 더 재미있고 여성스러운 감성을 자극할 수 있는 새로운 재해석의 방향을 찾아 패션 디자인을 제안하고자 한다.
