Exploring Korean Adults' Long-Term Memory of School Science Education (학교 과학교육에 대한 한국 성인의 장기기억에 대한 탐색)

  • 본 연구는 우리 나라의 성인들이 자신의 초중등 학교 시절 경험하였던 학교 과학교육에 대해 어떤 종류의 즐거운 혹은 괴로운 기억들을 현재까지 갖고 있는가를 탐색하였다. 성인들은 오래 전 경험하였던 매우 인상적인 활동이나 장면들을 통해 학교 과학교육을 기억할 것이고, 이러한 기억은 그들의 학교 과학교육에 대한 전반적인 태도에 결정적인 역할을 할 것이다. 따라서 성인들의 학교 과학교육에 대한 이러한 기억들을 살펴보면, 학교 과학교육의 특징을 이해하고 장기적으로 학교 과학교육을 보다 즐거운 경험의 장으로 만드는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 본 연구는 소규모의 설문 조사를 통해 이루어졌으며, 설문 대상은 대구지역의 30-50대 성인 88명이었다. 설문은 현재 과학과 관련된 특정한 직업을 갖고 있지 않은 사람을 대상으로 하였으며, 설문에서 응답자들은 자신들의 초중등 학교 과학교육을 받으면서 가장 즐거웠던 기억과 가장 괴로웠던 기억이 구체적으로 무엇이며 이러한 경험은 초중고 어느 때이었는가를 응답하였다. 성인들이 가장 즐거웠던 기억으로 지적한 것은 실험 실습 활동(65.9%), 야외학습 활동(19.3%) 등으로 전통적인 교실수업 이외의 활동이 약 86%로 나타났다. 그리고 효과적인 교실수업, 교사의 인성적 특징, 과학전람회 참가 등의 경험을 언급한 경우도 부분적으로 있었다. 성인들이 가장 괴로웠던 기억으로 지적한 것은 따분한 교실수업(51.1%), 실험 실습 활동의 부정적인 측면(28.4%) 등으로 나타났으며, 부분적으로 과다한 숙제, 교사의 인성적 특징, 야외학습 활동, 과학수업의 부재 등을 지적한 경우도 있었다. 또한 전체적으로 즐거웠던 기억은 국민학교 시절의 경험에서(56.8%), 반면 괴로웠던 기억은 고등학교 시절의 경험에서(44.3%) 많이 나타났다. 특히, "개구리 해부 실험" 의 경우, 7명이 가장 즐거웠던 기억으로 8명은 가장 괴로웠던 기억으로 언급하여 매우 상반된 견해를 나타냈다. 따라서 동일한 활동일지라도 학생들에게는 매우 상반된 경험으로 작용하게 되며, 이 경우 생명체에 대한 과학실험의 윤리적 문제와 이에 대한 갈등을 분명하게 드러냈다.

  • In modern society, to be achieved status as a Science edutainment experience, not just a science museum is established. It requires strategy and differentiation of a variety of entertainment, including theme parks, games, movies which are youth like. When the understanding of the audience for the principles of science to improve the use of ICT Convergence contents display, you need to take measures to increase the effectiveness of the Science Museum by giving the function of interesting leisure space in addition to the popular area of Science Education, Scientific and Cultural aspects reached. This role requires a science museum as a cultural space with the community as a chapter in science education. Science Museum is not a need to worry about what will convey to the public as efficiently as the Mecca of the educational content for the National Science Education. The analysis of the external environment, the composition will take on science education as a mecca of science education and how to combining ICT convergence technology in modern society beyond mere science museum experience and education in this study.

A Study on the Performance Factors on the Science and Technology Policy Consultation Project for Developing Countries (개도국 과학기술 정책 자문 사업의 성과요인에 관한 연구)

  • While the amount of Official Development Assistance (ODA) in Korea has been increasing, there are some criticism about the effectiveness and management of ODA itself. The ODA in the area of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) is also increasing but seems to have many problems. First, there is not clearly defined or agreed definition for STI ODA internationally as well as domestically. Second, the evaluation on the STI ODA performance is not enough. Third, the planning and management capability to implement ODA project is generally lacking. In this background, the issue of performance factors of STI policy consultation project was analyzed using the case studies and expert interviews. It is concluded that not only STI knowledge transferring capacity but also the absorptive capacity is important for the success of STI policy consultation project. In this sense, it is suggested to plan and manage the STI ODA project with the consideration of both transferring capacity and absorptive capacity.

Conditions of Science Teachers' Professionalism on Curriculum Organization and Implementation at the School Level (과학 교사의 학교 교육과정 편성·운영 역량 실태)

  • It is important to explore ways that reinforce teachers' curricular expertise at the school level as the school curriculum autonomy expands. This study investigated teachers' curricular expertise that is required for teachers' professionalism, autonomy, and accountability to cope with the increasing school curriculum autonomy. Teachers in the future school are expected to explore and develop school level curriculum within a given school context. Through literature reviews, domestic and foreign case studies, and survey of teachers, this study examined difficulties in science teachers' exercise of their professionalism on curriculum organization and implementation at the school level. Difficulties in exercising teachers' curricular expertise include lack of actual autonomy in curriculum operation at the school level, inadequate infrastructures, demanding accountability based on students' achievement results, lack of time for reflection, and lack of recognition for teachers as independent curriculum designers. In the conclusion section, a couple of ways to solve these difficulties are suggested including expansion of actual autonomy, activation of teachers' participation in policy decision making, reinforcement of qualitative components in school assessment, diversification of the teacher's career ladder, and activation of teachers' participation in professional learning communities.

The Study of Factors Related to Clinical Competency in Dental Hygienist (울산지역 치과위생사의 실무능력 관련요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess work performance of dental hygienists and identify factors influencing their work performance. A questionnaire was administered to 87 dental hygienists working dental clinics based in Ulsan during the period from June 2005 through July 2005. A total of 77 questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. SPSS 11.5 program was employed for statistical analysis. All data were expressed in terms of numbers, percentage and mean score. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. There was a significantly positive correlation between age and the level of work performance in the Scientific competency group and Esthetical competency group. 2. Unmarried dental hygienists demonstrated better work performance than married dental hygienists in Scientific, Esthetical and Personal competency groups, showing a statistically significant difference. 3. By education level, those with junior college degree had better work performance than those who are attending or graduated from college in the four groups. By workplace, those who were working at non-general hospitals demonstrated a higher level of performance in the three groups except the Ethical group, but the difference was not statistically significant. 4. A significantly positive relationship was observed between monthly pay and work performance in the Scientific, Personal and Esthetical competency groups. 5. A positive relationship was observed between work experience and performance in the Scientific competency group. But there was no difference between work experience and performance in the other three groups. 6. By working environment, those who were working with assistant nurses showed a higher level of performance than those working without assistant nurses in the Scientific competency group, and the difference was statistically significant.

The Consistency of High school Students Responses Concepts of 'Atmospheric and Water Cycle' according to Task Contexts ('대기와 물의 순환' 관련 개념들에 대한 과제 상황에 따른 고등학생들의 응답의 일관성)

  • The purposes of this study was to analyze the knowledge sources and of high school students' responses on tasks in scientific context and tasks in everyday context, and was to investigate the relationship between the consistency of responses and cognitive style. One hundred fifteen students participated in study. The students were asked to solve ten paris of problems about several concepts of circulation of atmosphere and water. Each pair of the problems consisted of two questions which were about the same concept but were about different context. That is to say, one questions related to scientific context and the other related to everyday context. Every questions included one subquestion in other to investigate the students' sources of knowledge. The students' responses on two questions in each problem were analyzed in order to compare the sources of knowledge and examine the influence of task context. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: First, students' knowledge sources varied by task contexts. That is to say, the students selected 'Science activities in school' as main source in questions related scientific context and chose 'Experience in daily life' as main source in questions related to everyday context. Second, inconsistency score on all paris of problem was significantly higher than consistency score (p<.01). This result indicated students' responses were much dependent on context. third, field-dependent students were more dependent on context, considering higher inconsistency score than field-dependent ones.

The Analysis of Learner's Motivation and Satisfaction with 3D Printing in Science Classroom (3D 프린팅을 활용한 과학 수업에서 학습자의 동기와 만족감 분석)

  • Technology is an important means to enhance students' understanding about scientific concepts. In particular, newly introduced 3D printing technology has great potential to help students learn scientific concepts better. 3D printing is a process for a creating physical object with a three dimensional model. In this study, we explored two types of learners' (students vs. adults) motivation and satisfaction with 3D printing technology. With regard to motivation, student learners showed higher task value, self-efficacy for learning, and satisfaction than adult learners. The result implied that 3D printing technology is more effective to student learners than adult learners. In addition, for adult learner group, negative relationship between technology and satisfaction was found. Therefore, support for reducing the technology anxiety for adult learners is necessary. Further discussions are provided for the research and application of 3D printing technology in science classroom.

  • The communication model has been accepted as the basic research paradigm of cartography since Board(1967) discussed the map/model analogy. In that paradigm, the function of maps was limited to the media of communication, and the functionality of maps was extremely emphasized. Therefore the model could not play its own role under the new environments such as computer, GIS, scientific visualization. Nowadays, the model has been attacked on several grounds and several alternatives have been suggested. Among the objections raised are (1) geographic visualization in which maps are considered as the tool of scientific visualization, (2) the contributions of art which are ignored in the positivist cartographic research, and (3) deconstructionist arguments which deny the scientific epistemology of map as an objective form of knowledge and recognize the textuality of maps including their metaphorical and rhetorical nature. Since a publication by McCormick et al, the scientific visualization based on the powerful computer graphics is used in a wide context. Maps are treated as the tools of scientific visualization and emphasis is on exploration of the geographic data to gain understanding and insight in the geographic visualization processes. The research on geographic visualization have stayed in the early stage of developing the conceptual model and the basic visualization tools. But, it is expected that the geographic or visual thinking which is emphasized in the geographic visualization will contribute the reestablishment of links between cartography and geography. Also, the development of scientific visualization tools and strategies will offer the opportunities to suggest a fresh idea, to synthesize information and develop holistic approaches to geographical problems.

Antioxidant potential of Sargassum horneri extracts in the liver of mice with PM-induced asthma (미세먼지 흡입 과민성 천식 마우스의 간 조직에서 괭생이모자반 추출물의 항산화 효능)

  • Particulate matter (PM) causes oxidative stress and can rapidly diffuse from the lung to the blood and accumulate in the liver when inhaled. Natural antioxidants can be used to protect against oxidative stress caused by PM. Sargassum horneri, a brown seaweed, possesses antioxidative activity and is a good source of functional foods. Therefore, this study investigated the antioxidant potential of S. horneri extract (SHE) in the livers of PM-induced asthmatic mice. PM inhalation triggered lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress, and SHE treatment attenuated malondialdehyde in the liver of mice with PM-induced asthma. Furthermore, SHE mitigated the increase in catalase activity. Importantly, SHE reduced the activity of 8-oxoguanine glycosylase (OGG1), a DNA repair enzyme. These results suggest that SHE has antioxidant potential for moderating PM-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage in the liver of asthmatic mice.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of an Artificial Intelligence Model for Classification of Basic Volcanic Rocks Based on Polarized Microscope Image (편광현미경 이미지 기반 염기성 화산암 분류를 위한 인공지능 모델의 효용성 평가)

  • In order to minimize the human and time consumption required for rock classification, research on rock classification using artificial intelligence (AI) has recently developed. In this study, basic volcanic rocks were subdivided by using polarizing microscope thin section images. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on Tensorflow and Keras libraries was self-producted for rock classification. A total of 720 images of olivine basalt, basaltic andesite, olivine tholeiite, trachytic olivine basalt reference specimens were mounted with open nicol, cross nicol, and adding gypsum plates, and trained at the training : test = 7 : 3 ratio. As a result of machine learning, the classification accuracy was over 80-90%. When we confirmed the classification accuracy of each AI model, it is expected that the rock classification method of this model will not be much different from the rock classification process of a geologist. Furthermore, if not only this model but also models that subdivide more diverse rock types are produced and integrated, the AI model that satisfies both the speed of data classification and the accessibility of non-experts can be developed, thereby providing a new framework for basic petrology research.
