  • This paper is the study on random, sinusoidal and shock vibration responses for the STSAT-3(science and technology satellite-3) proto-model which is the first small size all-composite satellite in Korea. The structure system of the STSAT-3 forms box type structure by joining several hybrid sandwich panels comprised of honeycomb core and carbon fiber reinforced laminated composite skins on both side. Mode shape, stress, displacement and acceleration responses are obtained on both the frequency domain and time domain by means of a commercial FEA software MSC/NASTRAN. From these analysis results, failure, safety factor and design validity are assessed. These results can be successfully applicable as reference data when a new satellite is developed as well as giving out an excellent criteria in satellite vibration treatment design.

  • The PPT being currently developed for the flight model represents a significant leap in techniques and technology compared to the previous flight ones. The electrical energy to be charged in the pulsed plasma thruster (PPT) is a very important aspect to provide an uniform impulse bit ,, and a specific impulse ,, for satellite attitude control. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear control technique and a stability analysis based on the Lyapunov function for the pulsed plasma thruster. Specifically, the proposed control law guarantees to charge and discharge the electrical energy generated from the power processing unit (PPU) within the specified time.

  • An entire composite structure satellite is developing for the first time in Korea. All of the structure is made of CFRP-composite faced aluminum honeycomb sandwich structure. Here the random and sinusoidal spectrum analysis of the satellite was carried out by using the finite element method. The general spectrum analysis was herein performed but also the PSD (power spectrum density) function for random vibration analysis had been transformed into equivalent time domain function and then transient analysis is conducted. The time history of displacement, acceleration, stress and velocity responses with respect to the PSD input has been achieved by the time dependent transient function transformed from frequency PDS function. It enables one to perform dynamic durability analysis and then expect the life time of the composite structure. The composite faced sandwich structure's spectrum analysis of a domestically-developed satellite, STSAT-3, has been discussed in the present study.

  • Whole composite structure small class (150kg) satellite, STSAT-3, was initially developed in Korea. The structure does have aluminum frames that support the structure, and it is composed of only composite sandwich panels. A number of electronic boxes and mechanical apparatus will be shielded within the compartments built up by the composite panels. This study focused on the random vibration responses of the satellite. For this objective, vibration tests and analyses have been successfully performed with respect to STM (structure and thermal model) of the satellite. Additionally, through the experiment and theoretical analyses, the both results' accuracy was verified by comparison each other.

  • RS(10,8) Code by 4-bit symbol was developed to protect the mass memory of STSAT-3 from SEU in orbit. Therefore, one symbol can be corrected for 32-bit data with 8-bit parity configuration. Moreover, scrubbing period and SEU occurrence rate was calculated based on the KITSAT-3 result. A prediction of SEU rates was performed based on the ground experiment results with a proton accelerator in the KIRAMS(Korea Institute of Radiological Medical Sciences).

  • (255,223) RS(Reed-Solomon) code which is the CCSDS(Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) standard was used in the STSAT-3 to correct errors during the downlink of payload data. The RS encoder developed by VHDL was implemented in MMU(Mass Memory Unit). Moreover, the RS decoder developed by C-language was implemented in the DRS(Data Receiving System) of ground station. In this paper, we reported the design and analysis results of RS(255,223) for STSAT-3. The BER(Bit Error Rate) performance from MMU to DRS was confirmed through the downlink test at 16 Mbps. Also, the error correction performance and capability of RS(255,223) was tested by the manual attenuation of the RF(Radio Frequency) signal in the X-band transmitter resulting in putting some errors in the communication line.

  • A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) was developed for a microsatellite STSAT-3. The satellite is now rescheduled to be launched into a low sun-synchronous Earth orbit (~700 km) by the end of 2012. Its main operational goal is the imaging of the Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distance of 27 m and 2 - 15 nm spectral resolution over visible and near infrared spectrum (0.4 - 1.05 ${\mu}m$). A flight model of COMIS was developed following an engineering model that had successfully demonstrated hyperspectral imaging capability and structural rigidity. In this paper we report the environmental test results of the flight model. The mechanical stiffness of the model was confirmed by a small shift of the natural frequency i.e., < 1% over 10 gRMS random vibration test. Electrical functions of the model were also tested without showing any anomalies during and after vacuum thermal cycling test with < $10^{-5}$ torr and $-30^{\circ}C\;-\;35^{\circ}C$. The imaging capability of the model, represented by a modulation transfer function (MTF) value at the Nyquist frequency, was also kept unvaried after all those environmental tests.

  • The OBC(on-board computer) of a satellite which plays a role of the controller for the satellite should be equipped with preventive measures against transient errors caused by SEU(single event upset). Since memory devices are pretty much susceptible to these transient errors, it is essential to protect memory devices against SFU. A common method exploits an error detection and correction code and additional memory devices, combined with periodic memory scrubbing. This paper proposes an effective memory scrubbing scheme for the OBC of STSAT-2. The memory system of the OBC is briefly mentioned and the reliability of the information stored in the memory system is analyzed. The result of the reliability analysis shows that there exist optimal scrubbing periods achieving the maximum reliability for allowed overall scrubbing overhead and they are dependent on the significance of the information stored. These optimal scrubbing periods from a reliability point of view are derived analytically.
