  • The purpose of the study is to develop a science writing program for middle school students and to analyze the effects of this program. The program consists of twenty-one 10-minute long sessions in 2 chapters (stimulus and response; the structure and function of plants) from the $2^{nd}$ year middle school textbooks. The team selected themes in science writing that can cultivate multiple facets of creativity in students: flexibility, originality and elaboration. The format of the science writing was diverse. The program was conducted through worksheets, and there was separate section within the worksheet for teacher to give feedback to students. The science writing program with teacher's feedback improved students' scientific creativity(p<.01). It seems like teacher's feedback is critical in checking students' concept and boosting students' creativity. The program is statistically effective in improving students' flexibility(p<.01), however it is not the case for improving on their originality and ability to elaborate(p>.05). We assumed that the relatively extensive portion of the writing was not suitable to improve students' ability to elaborate their ideas further as well as fostering originality. In order to improve the students' creativity and ability to elaborate, there is a need to adjust the amount of science writing, content, time.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of small group discussion on elementary students' science writing. In this study, four 6th grade students were chosen from an elementary school in Seoul. Students were involved in eight science writing classes and the contents of a small group discussion and interactions were recorded and observed. Students' science works were collected and analysed based on three domains: scientific thinking, logic and originality. The result of this study showed that the contents of a small group discussion greatly affected the scientific thinking domain. A low-achieving student received lots of help from a high-achieving student. It was easy to improve in the logic domain through the science writing classes. Average students got good grades in an originality domain when the subject was related to their real life. A small group discussion would have an effect on science writing ability positively if the students acquired proper guidance on the procedure and manner of discussion. The science writing lesson would be more effective if the learning group was organized homogeneously in the aspects of intelligence achievement and interpersonal relationships.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine writing characteristics of scientifically gifted students about biological sciences. To do this study, we analysed their scientific writings related to biological sciences, which were written by scientifically gifted students of 16 groups (20 males and 20 females). They were being taught in the Science Education Institute for the Gifted adjacent for University. Scientific writings related to biological sciences were analysed through categories such as biotechnology, bioethics, sciences in a life, and human health and disease. Scientifically gifted students were lacking in the ability to construct writings and to logically express own contentions according to writings of them. Writings related to biotechnology and bioehics of biological sciences were not better than ones related to sciences in a life, and human health and disease. The results of this study suggested that it should be necessary to develop gifted educational programs to strengthen the scientific writing ability. Especially, scientifically gifted students need to be provided with educational contents about biological issues related to bioethics and biotechnology.

  • Scientific explanation is composed of various representations such as texts, diagrams, and graphs, and each representation contributes to expanding scientific meaning by connecting similar but slightly different meanings as a 'mode'. Based on this perspective of social semiotics, we aimed to identify the characteristics of meaning formation demonstrated in students' science writing (verbal mode) and science drawing (visual mode) and to discuss the pedagogical use of multimodal representations. To that end, 18 science drawings and 18 scientific writings constructed by science-gifted elementary students on air pressure were collected. The characteristics of the drawn and written explanations were then analyzed from the affordance perspective in social semiotics. In science drawing, students showed a tendency to use the affordance of the visual mode to infer concrete changes from the particle view, such as the movement of air particles, the number of air particles, and the collision of particles. In science writing, students used the affordance of the verbal mode mainly to infer the causal relationship between the concept of air pressure and other related factors at an abstract level. Based on those results, we discuss the educational implications and provide concrete examples of how to use the unique affordances of each form to complement one another.

In order to carry out this study, 49 students from 6 grade of elementary school in P metropolitan city were selected and 24 students in one class were selected as experimental group and 25 students in the other class were selected as the comparative group. The experimental group was taught science writing heuristic in 10 times classes related to the 'seasonal change' and the general classes related to the 'seasonal change' were conducted in the comparative group. Based on the results of this study, the conclusions are as follows. First, the science writing heuristic class about 'seasonal change' showed a significant effect on elementary school students' science learning motivation for science class. This is analyzed as a result of the students being more familiar with their science class through science writing heuristic class. Second, the science writing heuristic class about 'seasonal changes' showed a significant effect on elementary school students' scientific attitude. This is because the science writing heuristic class offered elementary school students an opportunity to combine their experiences in daily life with the contents of the class. Third, students' participation, satisfaction, and interest in the science writing heuristic class applied in this study were high. Therefore, it seems to be effective if the science writing heuristic class is used for science class for elementary school students.
