  • This study recognizes that the externalizing problem behaviors of child with disabilities are the result of the social interaction between mother and child, and empirically verifies its systematic causal structure and multidimensional influence relationship. It was attempted to derive practical implications that can help the smooth normalization process of children's families. Therefore, 135 children with disabilities and their mothers selected by convenience sampling were targeted, and in the relationship between maternal overprotective parenting and externalizing behaviors of child, effortful control was used as a mediating variable, and defense style of mothers and children was used as a moderating variable. A Conditional Process Analysis(CPA) that can verify the moderated mediation Effect was performed by establishing a research model. As a result of the analysis, first, the overprotective parenting behavior of mother was statistically significant in both direct and indirect effects in increasing externalizing behaviors of child, and the mediation effect by effortful control was also statistically significant. Second, it was confirmed that the moderated mediation effect of effortful control by the mother's defense style was statistically significant, and the moderated mediation effect of effortful control by the child's defense style was not statistically significant. Based on the above results, assuming the importance of the influence of maternal parenting, a direct strategy for change in maternal overprotective parenting, child's Practical implications of parallel strategies with the tendency toward effective control and suboptimal strategies through the application of mothers' coping strategies were discussed.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of male and female adolescents' basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness) in the relationship between mothers' overprotection and adolescents' depressive symptoms. Methods: The participants included 292 middle school students (52.7% girls) living in Gyeonggi. Correlation analysis, t-test, and PROCESS macro by Hayes (2013) were performed using the SPSS 22.0 software. Results: Adolescents' autonomy and relatedness showed a significant mediating role between mothers' overprotection and depressive symptoms in all adolescents. In the case of male adolescents, only autonomy showed a significant mediating effect between mothers' overprotection and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Both mothers overprotection and adolescents' autonomy and relatedness should be considered to understand the development of depressive symptoms. The result also indicated that gender is an important factor when understanding the mediating role of basic psychological needs between mothers' overprotection and adolescents' depressive symptoms.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relation among adolescents' perception of parental overprotection, goal-seeking orientation, self-handicapping and academic procrastination. Questionnaires were administered to 1200 male and female high school students in Gyeonggi Province. A total of 942 questionnaires were statistically analyzed through mean, standard deviation, frequency analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The major results of the study are as follows: First, adolescents' academic procrastination differed by school grades. Second, for the high-performing group, self-handicapping, goal-seeking orientation and parental overprotection were significant predictors of their academic procrastination. For the mid-level performing group, self-handicapping and goal-seeking orientation were significant predictors of their academic procrastination. For the low-performing group, self-handicapping was the only predictor of their academic procrastination. Third, for the high-performing group, self-handicapping meditated the relation between parental overprotection and academic procrastination. Those results provide useful information regarding proactive support or intervention for adolescents' academic procrastination.

  • The objective of this research is to find out the relationship among resilience of young children, their interactive peer play, and mothers' overprotective parenting attitudes. The research was conducted for 455 children aged 3~5 and their mothers of day care centers in the cities of Kimje and Iksan. To measure resilience of young children, the rating scale for parents and teachers(Koo, 2010) adapting DECA(1999) was used. And the interactive peer play scale of Choi and Shin(2008) adapting PIPPS(1998) and the Parental Protectiveness of Do and Falbo(1999) was used. The results from this research are as follows. First, there is a generally significant positive correlation between resilience and interactive peer play of young children. Resilience of young children gets higher as interactive peer play of young children gets higher. Second, there is low negative correlation between resilience and mothers' overprotective parenting attitudes. Resilience of young children gets higher as mothers' overprotective parenting attitudes get low.

  • This study examined the relations between maternal personality, preschoolers' temperament, and overprotective and controlling parenting. A total of 285 mothers whose children aged from 4 to 6 years participated in this study. Mothers completed a set of questionnaires on their personalities, their children's temperament, and their overprotective and controlling parenting. Data were analyzed by regression analyses and t-test. First, maternal extraversion was negatively related to overprotective and controlling parenting, and maternal neuroticism was positively related to these parenting variables. Second, preschoolers' adaptability was negatively linked to overprotective and controlling parenting, and preschoolers' activity was positively linked to these parenting variables. Lastly, preschoolers' adaptability moderated the impact of maternal extraversion on controlling parenting. Maternal extraversion was a negative predictor of controlling parenting when preschoolers' adaptability was low. This relation was non-significant when preschoolers' adaptability was high. These results clearly indicate that both maternal personality and preschoolers' temperament play crucial roles in overprotective and controlling parenting.

The correlation were also assessed between perceived parenting style and problem behaviour Method:Thirty children(age 12-18) of schizophrenic mother and normal control subjects completed self-report questionnaires containing child·adolescent behaviour problem check list(K-CBCL) and Parental bonding instrument(PBI). Result:The result were as follow in the children of schizophrenic mother:1) the mean score of problem behaviour significantly higher than normal control group. 2) Parenting style was perceived to be less caring and more overprotective than in the control subject. 3) there was positive correlation between maternal overprotection and problem behaviour and negative correlation between maternal care and problem behaviour. Conclusion:We succeed in identify that the children of schizophrenic mother have more problems in social adjustment than normal control subjects. Parental rearing style are thought to be significantly negativistic in the children of schizophrenic mother. It is guessed that less caring and more overprotective rearing style of schizophrenic mother could have influence on problem behaviours of their children.
