Steel elevator pit was developed for the purpose of minimizing the excavation, simplifying the construction of the frame and economical efficiency by improving the problems that occurred in the existing reinforced concrete. It is common to apply conventional RC method through excavation to underground structures such as underground floor collector well and elevator pit. In recent years, the use of steel collector well and steel elevator pits to reduce construction costs by minimizing the materials of steel and concrete has been continuously increasing. The steel elevator pit is an underground structure and then the performance of the welding part and the structure system is important. Specimen with only steel plate and concrete without studs could support the load more than 3 times than the specimen with deck only. Therefore, even if there is no stud, the deck (steel plate) rib is formed and the effect of restraining the steel plate and the concrete during the bending action can be expected. However, since sudden fracture in the elevator pit may occur, stud bolt arrangement is necessary for the composite effect of steel plate and concrete. It is expected that the bending strength can be expected to increase by about 15% or more depending with and without stud bolts.
Because of crack control by steel bars after cracking the material models for reinforced concrete(RC) differ from those for plain concrete(PL). The nonlinear behavior of columns subjected to lateral load was simulated with reasonable accuracy in 3D analysis by applying distinct material models for RC and PL zone subdivided properly on the section. The shear strain is confirmed to develope unstably with ununiform distribution in out-of-plane direction. And this tendency becomes stronger as the thickness of column member increases in out-of-plane direction. If this ununiformity in strain distribution is not taken into consideration the capacity and the deformability of columns in shear dominant failure are overestimated excessively in two dimensional analysis. By introducing equivalent softening model a behavior of columns can be predicted too in two dimensional analysis.

A technique for analyzing laterally loaded piles was developed in order to accommodate various loading conditions and unique p-y curves obtained from local site. Developed technique was applied to several problems associated with laterally loaded piles to confirm the reliability of the developed technique. And the influences of the parameters considered in the applications on analysis results were investigated. It can be seen that length of the increment of one half of pile diameter is optimum for accuracy of analysis. Problems associated with safe penetration of pile and buckling of a free standing pile were analyzed by the developed technique. Also, analysis results obtained from considering various pile head conditions of a pile which supports retaining wall were compared. The developed technique can be used as a more flexible tool for analyzing laterally loaded piles than commercial program.

The concrete plug in an underground cavern prevents the stored product (oil, gas, etc) from leaking and the excessive show of underground water, so it plays an important role in construction and operation of the storage cavern. Additionally, it should maintain its stability under every possible loading condition. Once the plug is constructed, the cavern is isolated from the external access. Therefore, mechanical and hydraulic consideration should be made in construction to fulfill its function. Therefore, in this study, numerical analyses were conducted to study the optimal shape and thickness of the plug with respect to the various conditions of installation depth, the shape of the plug, in-situ stress ratio (K), the condition of rock-plug interface, and the effect of Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ). This paper also presents the effect of slot depth on the hydraulic behavior of the plug. These analyses were carried out by using the 2-dimensional finite difference code, rm FLAC, and the 3D code, m FLA $C^{3D}$./.

Because discontinuity in the rock mass and contact of soil-structure interaction exhibits coupled thermal-hydromechanical (THM) behavior, it is necessary to develop an interface element based on the full governing equations. In this study, we derive force equilibrium, fluid continuity, and energy equilibrium equations for the interface element. Additionally, we present a stiffness matrix of the elastoplastic mechanical model for the interface element. The developed interface element uses six nodes for displacement and four nodes for water pressure and temperature in a two-dimensional analysis. The fully coupled THM analysis for fluid injection into a fault can model the complicated evolution of injection pressure due to decreasing effective stress in the fault and thermal contraction of the surrounding rock mass. However, the result of hydromechanical analysis ignoring thermal phenomena overestimates hydromechanical variables.
In recent days, the foundations of huge structures in general and mega foundations of grand bridges and high-rise buildings in particular are required in geotechnical engineering. This study described 3 dimensional behavior of mat foundation on soft rock based on a numerical study using 3D finite element method. A series of numerical analyses were performed for various soil conditions and mat rigidities under vertical loading. Based on the results of the parametric study, it is shown that the prediction of the settlement, cross sectional tensile stress and bending moments in the mat is overestimated in the analysis without considering interface behavior in comparison with the analysis considering interface between mat and rock mass.

IPM bridge was developed to revise the problems of IAB bridge by Nam et al, (2016). This research conducted the p-y analysis to examine the parameter traits among the protruded length (H), penetrated length (L) of pile bent and soil conditions. From the results, the maximum bending moment happened in the top segment of pile bent, because it is integrated to the upper structure. Also, the maximum shear force was shown in the boundary of the sand and weathered soil zones according to the analysis soil conditions. The maximum member force and unbraced length is converged when the ratio (L/H) of protruded length (H) and penetrated length (L) is 1.0. The larger material force is happened, if the pile bent is penetrated shallowly compared to the protruded length. The definite inflection points were shown in the horizontal displacement curve from the p-y analysis, also the smaller penetrated length made the curve grade slower.

Recently structures become longer and higher because of the developments of new materials and construction techniques. However, such modern structures are susceptible to excessive structural vibrations, which may induce problems of serviceability and structural damages. In this paper we attempt to control structural vibration using the probabilistic neural network(PNN) and the artificial neural network(ANN) based on the training pattern that consist of only the structural state vector and the control force. The state vectors of the structure and control forces made by linear quadratic regulator(LQR) algorithm are used for training pattern of PNN and ANN. The proposed algorithm is applied for the vibration control of the three story shear building under Northridge earthquake. Control results by the proposed PNN and ANN are compared with each other.

A study for the nonlinear solution strategies to predict the ultimate behavior of a curved PSC cable-stayed bridge with complex geometry and highly nonlinear characteristics is presented. The load and displacement control strategies are used and found to be stable for the nonlinear solution of the PSC bridge up to the moderately excessive load. The ultimate analysis of curved PSC cable-stayed bridge using these solution strategies is not converged due to the propagation of the cracks in the wide range of the concrete elements and excessive variation of the stresses in the concrete elements and cables according to the complex geometry. The load control strategy using scale-down of the unbalanced loads is proposed as an alternative method for the case that the solution is not converged due to the severe nonlinearities involved in the PSC structures like a curved PSC cable-stayed bridge. Through the ultimate analysis of the PSC girder, the accuracy and the stability of the proposed solution strategies are evaluated. Finally, the numerical results for the ultimate analysis of the curved PSC cable-stayed bridge using scale-down of the unbalanced loads are compared with those obtained from other investigator. The validity of the proposed nonlinear solution strategy is demonstrated fairly well.
