  • It has been reported that destruction test by core collection is the most reliable of the structural concrete strength in present building construction field. But it causes low efficiency by damage and cutting in structure due to the core collection. It also has some problems in repairing. Additionally in case of strength test with management specimen, different environment compared to the structure environment cause problems about estimation precise structure strength. Therefore, it is required to develop structure direct strength test that has test values and credibility above the ones obtained by core specimen collection strength test and seasonal specimen test to suggest a reasonable and practical management method of structural concrete.

  • A series of laboratory tests was conducted to observe damage process by stress and to understand characteristics of permeability related with rock damage. Rock specimens which were composed of the Cretaceous medium grained granites were experienced of damage stress between 65% and 95% of the compressive strength. Rock deformation by damage process was identified with the elastic wave velocity test. Relationship between rock damage and permeability change was also analyzed by water injection test in the laboratory. According to the results of the tests, damage tends to be occurred from stress level of 80% of the compressive strength and it reduces elastic wave velocity. The damaged specimens with stress more than 80% of the compressive strength showed crack density more than 0.6 and persistent length with good connectivity of cracks. They also have higher permeability than that of specimens with crack density less than 0.6. Considered with the above results, the rock specimens used in this study were fully damaged from stress level of 80% of the compressive strength. Crack initiation and propagation by damage caused good connectivity of cracks through rock specimen. These damage process, therefore, brought high permeability coefficient through water flow conduit in the rock specimen.

  • In this study, total strain was measured by LVDTs and local strains on the surface of specimens were measured by strain gauges. And axi-symmetrically elastoplastic FEM analyses was carried out for cylindrical specimens. Considering the influence of the restraint induced by the loading platen, in the case of H/D=1, the strain distribution on the side of a specimen is obviously affected by the condition of platen contact. Furthermore, it is clear that the larger H/D ratio becomes, the smaller the influence to the strain distribution is. For the smooth contact condition, the strain on the side is not influenced by the stiffness of the specimen, the shape and the scale effect, the strain distribution coincides with the nominal total strain. Whereas, in the case of rough contact condition, the strain distribution is remarkably affected. It is made clear that strain responses of hard rock specimens may more sensitive than these of soft rock specimens as a results of interaction between loading platens and specimen and the uniaxial strength of specimens may strongly depends on this interaction and stress-strain relation is affected by the contact condition.

  • Gas hydrate dissociation can generate large amounts of gas and water in gas hydrate bearing sediments, which may eventually escape from a soil skeleton and form voids within the sediments. The loss of fine particles between coarse particles or collapse of cementation due to water flow during heavy or continuous rainfall may form large voids within soil structure. In this study, the effect of void formation resulting from gas hydrate dissociation or loss of some particles within soil structure on the strength of soil is examined. Glass beads with uniform gradation were used to simulate a gas hydrate bearing or washable soil structure. Glass beads were mixed with 2% cement ratio and 7% water content and then compacted into a cylindrical sample with five equal layers. Empty capsules for medicine are used to mimic large voids, which are bigger than soil particle, and embedded into the middle of five equal layers. The number, direction, and length of capsules embedded into each layer vary. After two days curing, a series of unconfined compression tests is performed on the capsule-embedded cemented glass beads. Unconfined compressive strength of cemented glass beads with capsules depends on the volume, direction and length of capsules. The volume and cross section formed by voids are most important factors in strength. An unconfined compressive strength of a specimen with large voids decreases up to 35% of a specimen without void. The results of this study can be used to predict the strength degradation of gas hydrate bearing sediments in the long term after dissociation and loss of fine particles within soil structure.

  • This study dealt with size effect of specimen in measuring deformation strength and estimating rut resistance of asphalt concretes under static loading using Kim test. Two aggregates, a normal asphalt (pen 60-80) and 6 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders were used for preparation of 14 dense-graded mixtures. Mixtures were prepared based on optimum asphalt content by Marshall compactor (S= 10cm) and gyratory compactor (S= 15cm) for Kim test and for wheel tracking test. In statistical analysis by general linear model (GLM) procedure of SAS, the diameter of specimen was found not to be a significant factor that affect the Kim test result. Therefore, it was found that either loom-diameter or 15cm-diameter of specimen gave no significant difference in deformation strength ($K_D$) values in Kim test for any aggregate mixture. However, the thickness of specimen was found to be a significant factor in determining $K_D$. It is estimated that $K_D$ is a function of y, vertical deformation, and y has something to do with thickness of specimen. Therefore, it is suggested that the thickness of specimen should not be higher than 6.6cm, and the correction factor depending on the thickness value should be developed in the future study.

  • This study introduced a new steel-jacketing method to retrofit RC columns. It also estimated the performance of steel-jacketed concrete cylinders. Twelve concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying steel jacket thicknesses of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm. Lateral confining pressure was applied with three clamps and the performance of plain concrete cylinders was compared with that of steel-jacketed cylinders. Steel jacket proved to be effective in increasing the strength of the cylinder. Finally, Li's constitutive model was compared with that of the experimentalresults. However, Li's model showed incongruity in Region II, which indicates the region after the yield of steel jackets. Therefore, the modified value of n was used for the region and the model showed a good agreement.

  • The development of contaminated sites often requires foundation concrete to be placed in contact with soils contaminated with organic compounds. There is a common perception that organic compounds affect the setting and hardening of concrete, giving a reduced long-term strength. In this study, unconfined compressive strength tests for concrete cured in Ethylbenzene were performed. The possibility of byproduct to be used for aggregate of concretes as materials of construction was also evaluated by carring out the investigation of the characteristics of the mixture of concrete and crushed oyster shell which is treated as waste material and often illegally disposed at coastal oyster production site. The transformation of strength characteristics was investigated by varying the blending ratio of fly ash.

  • The fatigue durability test using the actual size beam was performed with a cramp joint in order to apply to the highway bridge deck slab. Three types of beam were investigated for durability performance by considering stress conditions in real bridge deck slabs, 1) A beam with major shear force applied at the joint (RC Type) 2) A beam with major bending moments applied at the joint (PSC Type) 3) A beam with the pure shear applied at the joint. The experiment for beams with cramp joints showed that the cramp joint had enough durability for fatigue regardless of the overlaid length of the looped distribution bars under the current design strength level. Moreover, it was clarified that the enough durability for fatigue under the load repetition was achieved by increasing the joint span grater than 1.5D with the consideration of the deformation due to reduction in joint stiffness.

  • The KS F 2403 method used on domestic sites for checking the compressive strength of a structure, sets the compressive strength of the concrete used in structural specimens as the compressive strength of testing specimens. Under this regulation, the curing method used for testing the specimens must be the standard ponding curing method (20$\pm$2$^{\circ}$C). However, because in-placed concrete is exposed to open air and cured under the seasonal temperature changes, the compressive strength of a real structure is different from the tested compressive strength. (Therefore,) This thesis first identifies the distinct characteristics of the strength development by applying the curing method listed under the KS and used for testing specimens on compressive strength tests; the atmospheric curing method, the sealed curing method, and the structural specimen core strength testing methods used for the in-sites quality checks including reckoning of the compressive strength of the structural specimens and form-demolding period; and the curing method suggested in this research, which sets the internal conditions of the structural specimens as the conditions of the applied curing method. Then, the thesis suggests the specimen curing method that most closely reenacts the compressive strength of the concrete used on the structural specimens

  • In-place curing box for specimens is used to cure the compressive strength specimens for control in place concrete. The box if composed of insulating chamber maintaining 20$\pm$3$^{\circ}C$ of temperature, in this paper, strength and temperature history of specimens cured at in plate curing box are investigated to verify field applicability. According to test results, air temperature at measured time shows large temperature variation and below zero, whereas, inside temperature of in place curing box maintains within 20$\pm$3$^{\circ}C$ due to temperature control function. For curing condition. temperature of specimens cured at outside shows large temperature deviation. specimens lured at in-place curing box is not affected by outer temperature.
