Effect of cigarette smoking on air-conduction hearing threshold level in adult men (성인 남성에서 흡연이 기도청력역치에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effect of smoking on the hearing threshold, 1,887 adult male workers who visited health care center during the period 1 January 1996 - 31 July 1997 were selected. Air-conduction hearing threshold level, diastolic blood pressure(DBP), total cholesterol, fasting blood sugar(FBS), hematocrit and obesity were measured. The data on age, occupation, and smoking were collected. Air-conduction hearing threshold in smoker was significantly higher than non-smoker in categories of 250, 500, 1000 and 4000 Hz(p<0.05). Mean values of PTA-low, PTA-mid, and PTA-high in smoker were also significantly higher than non-smoker(p<0.05). In multiple regression analysis, smoking is likely to play a significant role after controlling age, occupation, DBP, FBS, total cholesterol, hematocrit, and obesity(p<0.05). The hearing threshold was significantly increased with increasing age(p<0.05), the manufacturing worker may have higher hearing threshold(p<0.05). The higher hematocrit and the more obese, the higher hearing threshold(p<0.05). However, DBP, total cholesterol and FBS were not significantly related with hearing threshold level. In conclusion, smoking was significantly related with the hearing threshold level in adult men.

Effects of Silkworm Powder on Blood Glucose and Lipid Levels in NIDDM(Type II) Patients (인슐린 비의존형(Type II) 당뇨환자에서 누에분말 섭취가 혈당 및 혈중지질농도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the silkworm powder on blood levels of glucose, Hb Alc, insulin, and lipids. Thirty-one NIDDM patients from Kyung Hee Medical Center were divided into two groups : patients with silkworm powder supplements and drug treatments(Drug diabetes) and patients with silkworm powder supplement only(Non-drug diabetes). For the control group, age-matched subjects were recruited. During the 4 weeks of the experimental period, silkworm powder(500mg/mea1) was given to the subjects right after each meal. Nutritional assessments and dietary education were carried out periodically, and body weight and blood pressure were measured when patients visited the hospital. Overnight fasting and 2-h postprandial blood glucose levels were measured at 2 week intervals. The blood levels of insulin, Hb Alc, and lipids were measured before and after the supplements. The mean ages of the three groups were 56.7-59.6 years old. The height, weight, and BMI did not differ among the groups. The fasting blood glucose levels were 138.1$\pm$22.0mg/dl for the Drug treated diabetes group, 175.0$\pm$32.0mg/dl for the Non-drug diabetes group, and 108. 3$\pm$16.gmg/dl for the control group at the begining of the supplement. After 4-wks of supplements, the blood levels of glucose tended to decrease in all three experimental groups. Before the supplements, the 2-h postprandial blood glucose levels of the Drug diabetes, Non drug diabetes, and control groups were 244.7$\pm$62.6mg/dl, 272.4$\pm$40.1mg/dl, and 147.7$\pm$28.0mg/dl, respectively. After the supplement, the levels were 197.2$\pm$30.gmg/dl, 208.6$\pm$ 56.6mg/dl, and 151.3$\pm$30.3mg/dl, respectively. This shows that silkworm powder tended to lower blood levels by 19.4% and 23.4% in NIDDM patient groups. However, the changes in the blood levels of insulin, Hb Alc, ind lipids were not observed after the supplement. In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated that silkworm powder has a tendency to decrease 2-h postprandial blood glucose levels, but it should be used with caution in controlling the diabetes. Relationship among impaired fasting glucose and diabetes and periodontal disease (공복혈당장애 및 당뇨병과 치주질환의 관련성)

  • This study examined the relationships among impaired fasting glucose (IFG), diabetes and periodontal disease. The data from 10,856 adults (aged over 19 years) was derived from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted in 2010 and 2012. Adjusting the related confounders, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that periodontitis were related to gender, age, education level, smoking and diabetic status (p<0.001). These findings suggest that abnormal fasting glucose, which is a predisposing factor for diabetes mellitus, does not appear to be a risk indicator for periodontal disease. On the other hand, if patients do not take steps to prevent or delay diabetes, prediabetes is likely to develop into type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Therefore, patients with prediabetes need to undergo continuous examinations and management of periodontal disease.

  • Big data analysis refers the ability to store, manage and analyze collected data from an existing database management tool. Thus, meta-analysis is a statistical integration method that delivers an opportunity to overview the entire result of integrating and analyzing many quantitative research results. Commonly, factors of metabolic syndrome can be defined as abdominal obesity, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol. In this meta-analysis, we concluded that the path between pre and post of the fasting blood glucose had the largest effect size of (r = -.324). Therefore, the effect of soybean food intervention showed an explanatory power of 10%. The second biggest effect size (r = .256) was found the path between pre and post in the waist circumference. Unfortunately, soybean food intake showed no improvement on abdominal obesity. Thus, we present the theoretical and practical implications of these results.

Relationship of oral health care with impaired fasting glucose (구강건강관리와 공복혈당의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of oral health care in the control of diabetes mellitus. Methods: The raw data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were utilized and 4,445 adults aged 19 and over were surveyed and examined. Complex samples crosstabs and general linear model analysis were carried out. Results: In total, 69.6 percent of the subjects were normal, 21.4 percent had impaired fasting glucose, and 9.0 percent had diabetes. By sex, 25.8 percent of the men had impaired fasting glucose and 10.8 percent had diabetes. Women with impaired fasting glucose accounted for 17.2 percent and 7.2 percent of women had diabetes. Impaired fasting glucose and diabetes were more common among men. Fasting glucose values were higher in the respondents who were male, were younger, whose monthly mean household income was lower, and who were less educated. Fasting glucose values were higher when the frequency of toothbrushing was lower and when dental floss and a dental brush were not in use. Fasting glucose was lower when there was no periodontal disease, when there was less difficulty in mastication, and when there were no implants in the upper and lower jaws. Conclusions: Oral health care workers should develop a variety of programs to motivate patients to take care of their own oral health actively and responsibly.

Effects of Tai Chi on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors among the Korean Elderly

  • This study explored the effects of Tai Chi on cardiovascular disease(CVD) risk factors among the Korean elderly. 68 elderly were selected and divided into two groups: an experiment group(34 patients) and a control group(34 patients). The experimental group practiced Tai Chi for 60 minutes a day, five times per week for 6 weeks total. The control group continued their routine levels of activity. CVD risk factors evaluated in both groups including body mass index, fasting blood sugar, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C). Each factor was measured before and after the 6-week intervention. Results showed that the experimental group had a significant decrease in measurements of body mass index, fasting blood sugar, triglyceride, and LDL-C levels. The experimental group also had an increase HDL-C level. Based on such findings, we believe that Tai Chi exercise program would function as an effective intervention strategy for preventing CVD in the elderly. Therefore, it is recommended that health and medical service personnel should seek to apply Tai Chi intervention as a daily component of elderly care.

Effect of Diet Containing Whole Wheat Bread with Capsosiphon fulvescens and Lindera obtusiloba Ethanol Extracts on Plasma Glucose and Lipid Levels in Rats (매생이와 생강나무잎 에탄올 추출물이 첨가된 통밀빵을 섭취한 랫트의 혈당과 지질수준에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of whole wheat bread with added Lindera obtusiloba (LO) and Capsosiphon fulvescens (CF) ethanol extracts on serum glucose and lipid levels in Sprague Dawley rats. Rats were divided into five groups depending on the diet administered: normal bread (NC), whole wheat bread (W), whole wheat bread with LO leaves extract (WL), whole wheat bread with CF extract (WC), and whole wheat bread with freeze-drying CF (WDC). After 4 weeks of consuming the experimental diet, the blood glucose level and hemoglobin A1c contents were found to be significantly lower in the W, WL, WC, and WDC groups than in the NC group. The high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels increased in the WL group when compared to those in the NC group and triglycerides levels decreased in all wheat groups compared to those in the NC group. These results suggest that wheat breads containing LO and CF extracts are effective for preventing hypercholesterolemia and obesity.

Levels of Plasma Glucose and Lipid in Rats Fed Bread Supplemented with Natural Extracts (천연추출물이 첨가된 식빵을 섭취한 흰쥐의 혈당 및 지질수준에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, 4-week-old rats were fed bread supplemented with Terminalia chebula (TC), Plantago asiatica (PA), Linder obtusiloba (LO), and Capsosiphon fulvescens (CF) ethanol extracts, to determine the decrease in blood glucose levels, as well as the anti-inflammatory and lipid-enhancing effects. Previous studies have demonstrated the antioxidative effects of these ethanol extracts. After sacrifice, the liver tissue, whole blood, and serum samples were collected for biochemical analysis. The results showed a significant decrease in blood glucose level, lipid peroxidation, malondialdehyde (MDA) level, HbA1c level, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (p<0.05) and an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol level in rats fed bread supplemented with LO and CF ethanol extracts (p<0.05). Therefore, the results of this study demonstrate that bread supplemented with LO and CF ethanol extracts can potentially affect the blood glucose level and lead to lipid enhancement.

The Relationship of Depressive Symptomatology with a Glycemic Control in Korean Women (한국 여성에서 우울증상과 혈당 조절의 연관성)

  • Backgrounds : Depression has been prevalent in women and maintaining optimal glycemic control is an important goal of diabetes management. Although depression is common in adults with diabetes, its relationship to glycemic control remains unclear, espacilly in Korean women. The current study examined the relationship of depressive symptomatology with glycemic control in Korean women. Methods : Beck depression inventory (BDI), $HbA_{1c}$ as an index of long-term glycemic control, fasting glucose level and body mass index (BMI) were measured in sample of 4,567 women of whom 4.7%, 216 women had diabetes, and the relationship between depression and glycemic control was analyzed. BDI Scores of 16 and above is a cut off point to indicate possible clinical depression. Results The frequency of depressed women (p<0.001) and the mean score of BDI (p<0.001) were significantly higher in diabetic women. The mean level of $HbA_{1c}$ (p<0.01) and fasting glucose (p<0.05) were higher in depressed women. There was a graded relationship between the percentile of depressed women and a degree of glycemic control impairment (p=0.001). Conclusion : The current study found the relationship of depressive symptomatology with glycemic control in Korean women. This relationship may be mediated by decreased self-care behaviors or by neurobiological dysregulation. Improving identification and treatment of depression in women with diabetes might have favorable effects on diabetic outcomes.

Development and Hypoglycemic Effect of Low-fat and Sugar-free Cookie (저지방 무설탕 쿠키의 제조와 혈당 강하 효과)

  • Low-fat and sugar-free (LFSF) cookies were developed for patients with metabolic syndrome X, such as obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and hypertention, using artificial sweeteners (mixture of aspartame and saccharin), pectin and herb extracts such as Polygonatum Odoratum (Mill) Druce, Schizandrae Fructus and Lycii Fructus, without sugar and fats. LFSF cookies were composed of 7.5 : 1 of aspartame and saccharin, 5% pectin, 49% protein, and 5% herb extracts, with reduced fat level. The values for area under the curve in oral glucose tolerance tests were significantly lower in 90% pancreatomized-(Px, n = 8) and sham - operated (Sham, n = 8) rats which consumed LFSF cookies, than the control, which consumed regular cookies. Blood glucose levels were higher and the peak levels were significantly lower in the LFSF cookies group than the control group of Px and Sham rats. Blood glucose levels of healthy female college students (n = 10) at 30 and 60 min after the consumption of 30 g LFSF and regular cookies were not different, but they were significantly lower in the LFSF-cookies group in diabetes patients (n = 10). In conclusions, LFSF cookies was considered as a good snack for diabetic patients.
