The building materials used for improving indoor air quality, the wood charcoal mixed with cement mortar or natural water paint were examined for their potential removing ability of formaldehyde. After the reaction of samples with formaldehyde in the glass flasks designed in our lab, the remaining formaldehyde was collected using DNPH (2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine) cartridges, and their concentration was determined using HPLC. From the results, it was found that the removing amount of formaldehyde per one gram sample containing 5, 10, or 15% of wood charcoal was more than three times compared to that of control (100% cement mortar or water paint). Their elimination percentages from the initial formaldehyde was about 80~90%. The experimental results for wood charcoal-water paint showed a similar trend with those of wood charcoal-cement mortar samples. Their elimination percentages from the initial formaldehyde was about 90%. It is proposed that formaldehyde is adsorbed on the adsorbed 'O' or 'OH' groups in the graphene layers formed through the re-arrangement of lignocellulose in the wood during the carbonization procedure.

Fine dust aerated in the atomsphere penetrates our lungs and blood lines through respiratory. Recent fine dust problems in Korea leads to development of various air purifiers. The researchers used this to study systems that could replace chemical filters. In order to compare the effect of the reduction of moss and conventional chemical filter(Hepa), a 1 cubic meter cube was prepared and the amount of the concentration of fine dust reduction was compared under controlled environment. Under the high concentration of fine dust, a test was done to figure out the reduction rate of the fine dust concentration by using air purification system with moss, hepa, and no filter. The air purification system(moss, hepa, and no filter) were operated 90 times in total, 30 times each. The test explains that the reduction of the fine dust amount and the rate of fine dust concentration. The results illustrate that the reduction of the amount fine dust was 138.93 after using air purification system with moss filter. In contrast, the usage of air purification system with hepa filter reduced the amount of fine dust to 76.57. And the air purification with no filter shows that the slight reduction of fine dust amount at 0.10. In the rate of fine dust concentration, moss filter was significantly higher than that of hepa, no filter (0.2379, 0.1298 and 0.0063 each). The results have confirmed that moss is effective in reducing fine dust concentration, and it is expected that with further improvement it can be used as a means to replace or supplement existing chemical filters in air purifier.

A nuclear plant ESF ACS simulator was designed, built, and verified to perform experiment related to ESF ACS of nuclear power plants. The dimension of 3D CAD model was based on drawings of the main control room(MCR) of Yonggwang units 5 and 6. The CFD analysis was performed based on the measurement of the actual flow rate of ESF ACS. The air flowing in ACS was assumed to have $30^{\circ}C$ and uniform flow. The flow rate across the HEPA filter was estimated to be 1.83 m/s based on the MCR ACS flow rate of 12,986 CFM and HEPA filter area of 9 filters having effective area of $610{\times}610mm^2$ each. When MCR ACS was modeled, air flow blocking filter frames were considered for better simulation of the real ACS. In CFD analysis, the air flow rate in the lower part of the active carbon adsorber was simulated separately at higher than 7 m/s to reflect the measured value of 8 m/s. Through the CFD analyses of the ACSes of fuel building emergency ventilation system, emergency core cooling system equipment room ventilation cleanup system, it was confirmed that all three EFS ACSes can be simulated by controlling the flow rate of the simulator. After the CFD analysis, the simulator was built in nuclear grade and its reliability was verified through air flow distribution tests before it was used in main tests. The verification result showed that distribution of the internal flow was uniform except near the filter frames when medium filter was installed. The simulator was used in the tests to confirm the revised contents in Reg. Guide 1.52 (Rev. 3).

Recently, research on carbon adsorbents has been active as an interest in improving the environment such as indoor and outdoor air quality. Considering that causative substances deteriorate the air quality are basically volatile organic compounds, it is important to improve the hydrophobicity of the carbon materials for better removal efficiency. This study presents a method for improving hydrophobicity of carbon and a measurement of the hydrophobicity. Generally, methods of improving the hydrophobicity of carbon materials are heat treatment, acid/alkali treatment, coating and immersion with hydrophobic materials. However, it collapses the pore structure and reduces the adsorption capacity. Therefore, this study briefly introduce not only the general method for improving carbon materials' hydrophobicity but also the method for converting the precursor of the material is briefly introduced. Futhermore, this study introduces a analytical technique used to determine hydrophobic modification or not, and aims to enhance the understanding of carbon materials.

This work examined improving the activity of photocatalyts by novel metal doping for the degradation of volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde and acetone. The activity was determined with type of dopant novel metal and volatile organic compounds. The palladium-doped $TiO_2$ was found to be improved the decomposition of acetone. The photocatalytic degradation rate for acetone was increased with decreasing temperature to $45^{\circ}C$. The optmum temperature of photocatalytic degradation rate for formaldehyde was $75^{\circ}C$. The enhancement of reaction rate with novel metal were 1.0 wt.% of palladium for acetone, 1.0 wt.% of plaitnum for formaldehyde.
In this study, a cationic gemini surfactant was synthesized using isosorbide, in order to modify the alkyl chain length in the range of C10~C16. The c.m.c and surface tension of the synthesized cationic gemini surfactant were measured to be in the ranges of 5.13 × 10-4~1.62 × 10-4 mol/L and 31.86~37.41 dyne/cm, respectively. The surface tension increased with increasing the length of the alkyl group. In addition, as the area per molecule occupied by the surfactant adsorbed on the interface increased with the reduced extent of adsorption, the bubble generation at the air-water interface decreased. The emulsifying capacity in benzene was maintained above 60 ± 5% after 8 h while that in soybean oil tended to decrease above 50 ± 5%. The performance was superior in benzene, a highly hydrophobic substance, and the emulsion stability was shown to be consistent beyond 1 h during the preparation of pre-emulsion in oil and water. The antimicrobial activity was dependent on the length of the hydrophobic chain of the synthesized cationic gemini surfactant due to the increased size of the clean zone in Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus.

In this study, a cationic surfactant BHMAS (N,N-bis-(3'-n-dodecyloxy-2'-hydroxypropyl)-N-methyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium methyl sulfate) having two lauryl and three hydroxyl groups was synthesized by the reaction of n-dodecyl glycidyl ether and 2-aminoethanol followed by the quarternization with dimethyl sulfate. The structure of the product was elucidated by $^{1}H-NMR$ and FT-IR. The CMC (critical micelle concentration) and surface tension of BHMAS at CMC condition were found to be $9.12\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ mol/L and 28.71 mN/m respectively. Dynamic surface tension measurements using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer indicated that a relatively long time was required to saturate the interface between air and aqueous surfactant solution. The interfacial tension measured between 1 wt% surfactant solution and n-decane reached an equilibrium value of 0.045 mN/m in 5 min. The adsorption capacity of the synthesized surfactant was observed to be excellent, which suggests that the surfactant can be used as a softening agent during a laundry process.
Filefish muscle in the form of thin plate $(5{\times}10{\times}0.4\;cm)$ was dried in a forced air dryer at $47.5^{\circ}C$ to study the relation between dehydration mechanism and water activity. The dryer was designed in such a way that the temperature, relative humidity and velocity of air could be controlled. The whole dehydration process of the filefish muscle was divided into two different drying rate periods, constant and falling rate period. During the constant drying rate period, the drying rate was proportional to the square root of air velocity under the conditions of constant temperature and relative humidity of air. The falling rate period was further divided into two different falling drying rate periods, first and second falling rate period. The first falling rate period was an unsaturated surface drying period caused by partial unsaturation of the drying surface with capillary condensed free water diffused from the internal part of the filefish muscle. At this stage he drying rate was mainly dependent on the relative humidity at constant air temperature, and case-hardening phenomenon started at the end of this stage. The moisture content and the water activity at which the second falling rate period started were not constant, because the drying rate of the first falling rate period was strongly dependent on the air humidity. The second falling rate period was again divided into two drying rate periods, former and latter period. The drying rates of both of these periods were independent on the external air humidity. During the former period of the second falling rate period, the dehydration was proceeded by diffusion and vaporization of capillary condensed free water in filefish muscle. The diffusion coefficient of water was $2.89{\times}10^{-10}m^2/sec\;at\;47.5^{\circ}C$. At this stage, the case-herdening continued until the water activity reduced to 0.7. The latter period of the second falling rate period started at the water activity of 0.45. The dedydration was proceeded by diffusion and vaporization of bound water, which adsorbed in multimolecular layers, through the hardened drying surface. The number of molecular layers was 4, and the diffusion coefficient of water during this stage was $4.38{\times}10^{-11}m^2/sec\;at\;47.5^{\circ}C$.
Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is known to be an effective process to remove the contaminants from the soils by enhancing the vaporization of organic compounds using forced vapor flows or applying vacuum through soils. Experiments are carried out to investigate the effects of the organic contaminants, types of soils, and water contents on the removal efficiency with operating time. In the study, simulated soils include the glass bead which has no micropore, sand and molecular sieve which has a large volume of micropores. As model organic pollutants, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, and trichloroethylene are selected. Desorption experiments are conducted by flowing nitrogen gas. Under the experimental conditions, it is found that there are linear relationships between logarithm of removal efficiency and logarithm of number of pore volumes. The number of pore volumes are defined as the total amount of air flow through the soil column divided by the pore volume of soil column. For three organic compounds studied, the removal rate is slow for no water content, while the number of pore volumes for removal of organic compounds are notably reduced for water contents up to 37%. For the removal of dense organic compound, such as trichloroethylene, a large number of pore volumes are needed. Also, the effects of the characteristics of simulated soils on the removal efficiency of organic compounds are studied. After the characterization of soil surface, porosity of soil columns and types of contaminants, the results could provide a basis for the design of SVE process.
