The purpose of this paper is to suggest 10 mm aggregate specification for thin layer asphalt pavement using steel slag. Aggregate gradations of conventional dense-graded asphalt mixtures were made by fuller's model, whereas 10 mm dense-graded asphalt mixture was obtained tender mix due to close to the maximum density line. The proposed aggregate gradation specification was made to have enough VMA and well-interlocking refer to foreign standards. The correlation between the proposed aggregate gradation and the properties of mixtures were analyzed using Gradation Ratio (GR) and Compacted Aggregate Density (CAD). The CAD index has a high $R^2$ of 0.86-0.99 because the CAD index is able to reflect various aggregate properties. As the results of evaluation by CAD index the proposed aggregate gradation provides more reliable stability and VMA. The percent passing (%) of aggregate size smaller than 0.3 mm was limited 10% or more for improving crack resistance. This limitation increased for 15% of the asphalt mixture's toughness.

In this study, the quality of recycled aggregate for concrete was investigated as the number of recycled aggregate crushing cycles, grinder and crusher, peeling and crushing. First, the quality of density, absorption ratio and solid content was improved as the separation distance decreased and the number of crushing increased, depending on the number of crushing of recycled aggregate and the distance between mantle and cone cave. The quality of density, absorption ratio and solid content was improved as the wire mesh used in striking plate and the number of hammers increased, depending on the type of striking plate and the number of hammers.
In recent years the field application of high performance concrete has been increased to improve the quality and reliability of concrete structures. The mix design of the high performance concrete includes the 2 set-off mixture theory of mortar and coarse aggregate and that of paste and aggregate. The 2 set-off mixture theory of mortar and coarse aggregate has a problem of having to determine its value through repeated experiments in applying the rheological characteristics of mortar. The 2 set-off mixture theory of paste and aggregate has never been applied to high performance concrete since it doesn't take into account the relationship between optimum fine aggregate ratio and unit volume of powder nor does it consider the critical aggregate volume ratio. As the mixture theory of these high performance concretes, unlike that of general concrete, focuses on flowability and charge-ability, it does not consider intensity features in mix design also, the unit quantity of the materials used is determined by trial and error method in the same way as general concrete. This study is designed to reduce the frequency of trial and error by accurately calculating the optimum fine aggregate ratio, which makes it possible to minimize the aperture of aggregate in use by introducing the maximum density theory to the mix design of high performance concrete. Also, it is intended to propose a simple and reasonable mix design for high performance concrete meeting the requirements for both intensity and flowability. The mix design proposed in this study may reduce trial and error and conveniently produce high performance concrete which has self-chargeability by using more than the minimum unit volume of powder and optimum fine aggregate with minimum porosity.

This study investigates enzyme stabilization in clay-rock bricks through mechanical tests and image processing. Appropriate soil mixtures were designed using clay/crushed rock with ratios of 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60, and 30/70 by weight to verify the strength of the enzyme brick and soil compaction. The maximum compressive and flexural strengths in the 60/40 ratio mixture were found to be 5MPa and 1.25MPa, respectively; however, the maximum dry unit weight of $2.073g/cm^3$ was found in the 50/50 clay/gravel ratio mixture. Generally, the strength of the enzyme brick was improved by 27%. The paper concludes that in order to achieve optimal strength, soils should be mixed with the 60/40 clay/gravel ratio, which provides an adequate strength, while 50/50 ratio should be used for achieving more compaction. The SEM-EDX observation and Matlab image processing verified how the bond structure appeared after enzyme stabilization. It was found that enzymes created bond with the clay soil and the crushed rock for rendering strength and stability.

In this study, the mechanical properties of concrete with recycled coarse aggregate (RG) selected by multi-stage wind pressure (MSWP) treatment were evaluated. After evaluating the basic properties of natural and recycled coarse aggregates, the mechanical performance of the recycled coarse aggregates concrete was experimentally investigated. As a result, it was found that the MSWP technique could improve the fundamental properties such as density and water absorption of RG. In addition, the concrete with RG selected by MSWP showed a better mechanical performance, indicating a higher strength values, surface electric resistivity and a lower absorption. Thus, it seems that the MSWP technique can be effective for the production of high-quality RG.

In case of recycled fine aggregate, density and absorption ratio is lower than natural one, so it is used to lower value added products and it is limited its usage. It is reported that Compressive and tensile strength of recycled concrete is more deteriorate and shrinkage properties is very deteriorate because high absorption of recycled fine aggregate. Accordingly, in this study, it is develop that dry manufacturing system composed specific gravity separator of high-speed rotation impact type, reclaimer of minuteness fine aggregate and evaluate that shrinkage properties of recycled concrete using recycled fine aggregate at producing this system. Hereafter, it is present that fundamental data to practical use recycled fine aggregate.

Recycled aggregate by the recycling construction waste has a lot of advantage such as the developing the alternative resource and protecting of environment. However, recycled aggregate is used as the low quality grade, because it is difficult to remove old mortar from aggregate. To use the recycled aggregate as high quality grade, it is important to develop the technology to produce the high quality recycled aggregate. To manufacture the high quality recycled aggregate, old mortar attached on the aggregates should be removed efficiently. Therefore, in this study, we suggested the optimum condition to remove old mortar effectively using sulfuric acid and low speed wet rotary mill for high quality recycled fine aggregate. The results shows that the recycled aggregate satisfy on the standards of KS F 2573 in density, absorption and solid volume, when adequate condition of sulfuric mole ratio and aggregate ratio are make.

In Korea, reutilization of construction waste is gaining attention as construction waste generated increases continuously. Currently, the concrete waste is simply crushed and used as a low value application such as paving, back filling, etc. To meet the demand of aggregate for construction and the resource efficiently, production of high quality recycled aggregate is necessary. Therefore, in this study, a better process for production of high quality recycled aggregate was developed using combination of heat pretreatment and autogenous milling. Test results showed that the recycled aggregate has a density of $2.5\;g/cm^3$ and a water absorption ratio of 3.0%, which meet the specification of the first class of KS F 2573. Currently, a pilot scale autogenous mill is being constructed and tests will be further conducted to develop a commerce-scale process.

In this study, with the aim of improving the performance of shale to allow for its use as coarse aggregate for concrete, we coated shale aggregates with water repellents and polymers and evaluated their physical properties such as density, water absorption rate, wear rate, and stability depending on the coating method. In addition, the effects of the performance improvement were evaluated by assessing the properties of fresh concrete produced by varying the shale substitution ratio, as well as the compressive strength, flexural strength, and freeze-thaw resistance according to curing ages. The test results revealed that the absolute dry densities of all coated aggregates satisfied the standard density for coarse aggregates for concrete(>$2.50g/cm^3$),and the absorption rate of the shale aggregate coated with water repellent decreased by about 50% compared with that of uncoated shale. The wear rate of the polymer-coated shale decreased by up to 13.0% compared with that of uncoated shale. All coated aggregates satisfied the stability standard for coarse aggregates for concrete(${\leq}12$). The water repellent-induced performance improvement decreased the shale aggregates' slump by about 20~30mm compared with that of the uncoated shale aggregates, and the air content of the repellent-coated shale aggregate increased by up to 0.9% compared with that of the uncoated shale aggregate. The compressive strength of the polymer-coated shale aggregates at a curing age of 28 days was RS(F) 95.7% and BS(F) 90.0%, and the flexural strength was RS(F) 98.0 % and BS(F) 92.0% of the corresponding values of concretes produced using plain aggregates. Furthermore, the concrete using polymer-coated shale aggregates showed a dynamic modulus of elasticity of RS(F) 91% and BS(F) 88% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, thus demonstrating improved freeze-thaw durability.

As Construction & Demolition(C&D) debris increase every year, a system has enforced for recycled aggregate made out of C&D debris, then recycled aggregate usage increased in construction field. But as environmental problem by alkalinity of recycled aggregate occurred, the study for lowering alkalinity of recycled aggregate is needed. In this study we made alkalinity reducing facility and installed in the C&D debris midterm-treat field. Then we certified effect of lowering alkalinity and quality of recycled aggregates before and after carbonation. As a result, the most effective carbonation condition is 30seconds in carbonation time, -50~100 kPa of reaction pressure with change of 3cycles. This condition made pH 9.33~9.8 of recycled aggregate possible. The quality of recycled aggregate after carbonation was better than before carbonation in terms of plasticity index, modified CBR, abrasion loss, sand equivalent, liquid limit, size distribution, density and water absorption.
