In this paper, an systematic approach is presented, in which the mixed variational theorem is employed to incorporate independent transverse shear stresses into a classical higher-order shear deformation theory(HSDT). The HSDT displacement field is taken to amplify the benefits of using a classical shear deformation theory such as simple and straightforward calculation and numerical efficiency. Those independent transverse shear stresses are taken from the fifth-order polynomial-based zig-zag theory where the fourth-order transverse shear strains can be obtained. The classical displacement field and independent transverse shear stresses are systematically blended via the mixed variational theorem. Resulting strain energy expressions are named as an enhanced higher-order shear deformation theory via mixed variational theorem(EHSDTM). The EHSDTM possess the same computational advantage as the classical HSDT while allowing for improved through-the-thickness stress and displacement variations via the post-processing procedure. Displacement and stress distributions obtained herein are compared to those of the classical HSDT, three-dimensional elasticity, and available data in literature.

This study presents a methodology for optimization of static characteristics of golf club shafts. Stacking sequence for the optimal composite shaft performance is searched. A new objective function is defined for the simultaneous optimization of flexural and torsional stiffnesses. Classical lamination theory is used for the static analysis. As the optimization tool, genetic algorithm is applied with the stacking sequence as design. variables. With the optimal stacking sequence, dynamic characteristics of the shaft is also studied.

A curl distortion induced by shrinkage during stereolithography polymerization process is analyzed with the classical lamination theory. Test parts of different layer thickness and part thickness are manufactured and their deformations are measured with CMM. Curl distortion is generated by the differential shrinkage of the layers, where the total shrinkage includes the shrinkages due to solidification and the change of temperature. It is shown that the curl distortion increases exponentially with decreasing the total thickness of the part, whose smaller layer thickness induces larger curl distortion. It is verified that only a part of the total shrinkage plays a role in generating the curl distortion.

Composites are finding increasing use in a wide variety of engineering applications due to their outstanding mechanical properties. A number of studies have focused on the development of new materials as well as the response of composite structures to static and dynamic loads by assuming the external driving forces to be deterministic. However, there ate many situations in practice where the exciting forces vary randomly. In this work, the nonlinear response of laminated composite plates excited by stochastic loading is studied by the finite element method. Classical, first-order and third-order shear theories for plates are used in the finite element formulation. Since most composites exhibit significant nonlinearity in the shear stress-strain law, this is included in the present analysis.
In this paper, elastic behavior of woven fabric composites with various fiber yarn structure were predicted through a theoretical calculation model. A representative volume elements (RVE) that can represent the mechanical properties of the woven composites were selected and crimp angle of the weave yarn was defined by several sinusoidal functions. The effective material properties of the woven composite such as young's modulus, shear modulus and poisson's ratio was predicted by classical laminate theory (CLT). The fiber volume fractions were calculated according to the shape and pattern (plain, twill weave) of the fiber yarn, and the elastic behavior of each woven composite was obtained through a theoretical calculation model. Also, to verify the theoretical predictions, woven composite specimens of plain and twill weave were fabricated by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process and then mechanical test was conducted. As a results, a good correlation between theoretical and experimental results for the elastic behavior of woven composites could be achieved.

In this study the mechanical behaviors of fiber metal laminates(FMLs) such as ARALL, GLARE and CARE which are recently developed as new structural materials and known to have excellent fatigue resistant characteristics while with relatively low densities compared to the conventional aluminum materials, are considered through the classical lamination theory. The mechanical properties such as elastic moduli, thermal expansion coefficients and hygro-thermally induced residual stresses in the fiber metal laminates are obtained and compared each other. Also, carpet plots of effective elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio and the thermal expansion coefficient for GLARE FML are plotted.
A simplified method for determining the three mode(I, II, III) components of the strain energy release rate of free-edge delaminations in composite laminates is proposed. The interlaminar stresses are evaluated using the interface moment and the interface shear forces which are obtained from the equilibrium equations at the interface between the adjacent layers. Deformation of an edge-delaminated laminate is analysed by using a generalized quasi-three dimensional classical laminated plate theory. The analysis provides closed-form expression for the three components of the strain energy release rate. The analyses are performed for composite laminates subjected to uniaxial tension, with free-edge delaminations located symmetrically and asymmetrically with respect to the laminate midplane. The analysis results agreed with a finite element solution using the virtual crack closure technique.
2 ply laminated composite is regarded to simulate the interply behavior of the belt layer of the tire. It was cone with 3 dimensional FE(Finite Element) analysis to determine interply shear stress and strain. Widthwise, the shear strain was measured by the pin method. These results are compared with those of CLT(classical lamination theory) in center region and those of Kassapoglou's and Kelsey's theory in edge region. In the FE analysis. rubber is assumed as linear elastic material. and rubber/cord laminate as the orthotropic material composed of cord and rubber In the FE result, interlaminar shear stress causing the interlaminar delamination has the largest value in the edge region of the inner rubber layer. Numerical results obtained coincides with CLT well in the center region, and agrees with other theoretical result little in the edge region.
