This study was performed to evaluate the PCBs-containing wastes using official test method. Ninety samples of transformer oil and various solid waste were collected to assess the analytical results. In the analysis of PCBs-containing wastes, the PCBs levels were detected in the range of 7.6 mg/kg to 23.8 mg/kg for transformer oils, $0.02\sim0.54\;{\mu}g/100cm^2$ for plat solid wastes, and 0.01~0.071 mg/kg for amorphous solid waste. In the cupper wire waste of the transformer with oil concentration level of 23 mg/kg, the analytical result exceed PCBs regulation level of 0.04 mg/kg. The new proposed analytical method for PCBs containing waste can be forced to effective management of the wastes.
Compression work on a pyrite powder has been carried out using energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) with Mao-Bell type diamond anvil cell (DAC) and synchrotron radiation(SR) at room temperature. It has been reported the bulk moduli of pyrite show the large variations depending on the experimental conditions as well as the apparatus used. Thus, two kinds of sample in different pressure transmitting media of both NaCl and MgO powder emerged in alcoholic fluids were subjected to measure their compressibilities. Bulk moduli thus obtained are 138.9 GPa and 198.2 GPa, respectively, and this result contradicts to the anticipated values according to the hydrostaticity conditions of the sample chamber. This might be due to the alcoholic fluids phase transition mainly with the side effects from the difference of both solid state detector (SSD) used and E*d value applied. All experiments were performed at the Beam Line 1B2 of Pohang Light Source (PLS).

The purpose of this study is to quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas sample using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to GC analysis. The optimal HS-SPME conditions was CAR/PDMS fiber and 30 min absorprion time for the analysis of various VOCs. In optimal conditions, 80 VOCs could be detected within 1 ppbv and even less than 0.0005 ppbv especially in the case of BTEX. However, fiber reproducibility on adsorption efficiency was 1~9.2% (between the same fiber) and 5.9~13.5% (between the other fiber). We successfully determined 35 VOCs in landfill gas with this method and found that VOCs of high concentration are emitting from vent pipe of closed/open landfill site under the HS-SPME conditions. This method may apply to VOCs/odor determination from various atmospheric environmental samples as well as landfills.
In this paper, we propose an effective method of applying multichannel-audio feature values to GRNNs (Gated Recurrent Neural Networks) in polyphonic sound event detection. Real life sounds are often overlapped with each other, so that it is difficult to distinguish them by using a mono-channel audio features. In the proposed method, we tried to improve the performance of polyphonic sound event detection by using multi-channel audio features. In addition, we also tried to improve the performance of polyphonic sound event detection by applying a gated recurrent neural network which is simpler than LSTM (Long Short Term Memory), which shows the highest performance among the current recurrent neural networks. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better sound event detection performance than other existing methods.

We applied a sensitive method based on on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MSD) using an electrospray interface for the determination of eleven perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in water. The on-line connection suppressed the target loss by keeping the cartridge from drying, which resulted in improvement of the recovery and saving of the analytical time. For the on-line solid-phase extraction of 10 mL water samples, recoveries were between $80.4{\pm}5.2%{\sim}109.5{\pm}1.4%$ and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 3.6~15.9 ng/L for the PFCs. The total PFCs concentrations of the tributaries and main stream of Nakdong River water samples were in the range of $8.0{\sim}678.6{\mu}g/L$.
Open-phase fault in a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) occurs due to disconnection of phases of motor windings or inverter switch failures. When an open-phase occurs, it leads to the generation of torque ripples and vibrations in the motor, which can have a critical impact on the safety of the vehicle (including aircraft) using a PMSM as an actuator. Therefore, rapid fault detection and classification are essential. This paper proposes a classification method for detecting open-phase faults and locating fault positions in a PMSM used in aircraft applications. The proposed approach uses an Extended Kalman Filter for fault diagnosis, and it subsequently classifies faults using a Multiple Model filter.
A suitable method of sample treatments to minimize the analytical interferences was presented in order to determine bisphenols [bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BFDGE), and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE)] in various canned beverages coated with epoxy resin by the reversephase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) equipped with a fluorescence detector and the gas chromatography with mass selective detection. The recovery test of bisphenols was performed using 1, 5, and 10 ${\mu}g/L$ bisphenols spiked beverages with the combined technique of the solid-phase extraction (SPE) and the liquid-phase extraction (LPE). Both BPA and BADGE showed quite adequate resolutions in HPLC-chromatograms. The recoveries of BPA obtained by LPE with diethyl ether were higher than those obtaind with methylene chloride on coffee, shikhye and fruit juice. For cola and tea, the recoveries of BPA obtaind by SPE were higher than those by LPE with diethyl ether. The recoveries of BADGE were less than those of BPA for all beverage samples treated by either SPE or LPE method. In survey of bisphenols for eighteen commercial canned beverage samples, BPA contents of coffee, cola, tea, shikhye, and fruit juice were in the range of $1.3{\sim}11.6,\;0.5{\sim}0.9,\;1.0{\sim}1.3,\;2.4{\sim}7.9$, and $3.0{\sim}3.4\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively, but there was no detection of BPA in beer sample.

Anatoxin-a is a cyanobacterial neurotoxin with a high toxicity produced by Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Oscillatoria. Water bloom, formed by Anabaena has been occurring frequently in Lake Yeongchun. It is need to develop a sensitive method for determination of anatoxin-a to control potential hazard in raw water resources. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method of anatoxin-a using solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. Anatoxin-a was converted into a highly fluorescent derivative using 4-fuoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBF-F). The method was evaluated in terms of linearity of calibration curve, recovery and repeatability, and the adequate values were obtained. The method detection limit was $0.034\;{\mu}g/g$ and $0.022\;{\mu}g/L$ for algal and water samples, respectively. The concentrations of anatoxin-a were measured in algal and water samples from Lake Andong, Yeongchun and Daechung and ranged from $0.135\;{\mu}g/g$ to $10.979\;{\mu}g/g$ in algal samples and not detected in water samples.

Offensive odor from CAFO(concentrated animal feeding operation) and its control have become a significant issue in Korea. Control of odors from the CAFO requires to identify major odorant and their generation mechanisms. In this study, an easy method to collect gas sample and to quantify its odorants is proposed. The method involves on-site odorant extraction with solid-phase microextraction and quantitation with GC/MSD or GC/FID. Analytes of the current study include: trimethylamine(TMA), carbon disulfide($CS_2$), dimethyl sulfide(DMS), dimethyl disulfide(DMDS), acetic acid(AA), propionic acid(PA) and n-butyric acid(BA). The resulting linearity($R^2$) of calibration curve for each analyte was good over the range from several ppbv to ppmv; 0.984 for TMA(0.056-1.437), 0.996 for $CS_2$(0.039-0.999), 0.994 for DMS(0.029-0.756), 0.995 for DMDS(0.024-0.623), 0.992 for AA(0.068-1.314), 0.955 for PA(0.047-0.940), and 0.976 for BA(0.036-0.712). Method detection limits were 5.67, 6.39, 5.78, 25.2, 0.098, 0.363 and 0.099 ppbv for AA, PA, BA, TMA, DMS, $CS_2$, and DMDS, respectively. With the developed method, odorants from poultry, swine, and cattle barns were analysed. All the compounds but DMDS were detected from the sample collected in the poultry barn, and their levels exceeded the representative published human olfactory threshold.
