  • To find out the relationship between the eco-physiological characteristics and wind damage of rice leaves by typhoon 'Thelma' occurred at young panicle formation stage of rice plant, the study was carried out. The rate of dead leaves by wind damage in Indica X Japonica varieties were higher than that in Jap. varieties. Ind. X Jap. varieties which had erect and broader leaves had the higher number of silicified cell, moisture loss and stomatal aperture in leaves. And the wind damage were positvely correlated with the characteristics such as the number of silicified cell (r=0.7546$\^$*/), rate of moisture loss (r=0.8343$\^$**/) and stomatal aperture (r=0.8460$\^$**/) of rice leaf blade etc.

  • Research was initiated to find out acid drainage neutralizing techniques for ecological vegetative growth on the acid drainage slope. Four different acid drainage neutralizing techniques [no treatment, limestone layer treatment, phosphate treatment, and limestone layer + phosphate treatment] were treated on the acid drainage slope. There was a significant difference observed in treated acid neutralizing techniques for acidity, surface coverage rate, death rate and plant root status. Treated acid neutralizing techniques were effective for neutralizing acidity and vegetative growth in order of [first: limestone layer + phosphate treatment, second: phosphate treatment, third: limestone layer treatment and fourth: no treatment]. The limestone layer and the phosphate treatments were effective for neutralizing acidity and vegetative growth, respectively. However, the phosphate treatment was more effective compared to the limestone layer treatment on the acid drainage slope. We figured out that the phosphate treatment is more effective for neutralizing acidity and vegetative growth because of coating effect of sulfides.

  • To characterize elastic and plastic chilling injury, rice seedlings grown at 28/$16^{\circ}C$ day/night temp. under 20K lux (13hrs.) in a phytotron were subjected to a 11/$6^{\circ}C$, 20K lux condition for 2, 4, 6 or 8 days at 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5th leaf-stage, respectively, followed by further growth under 28/$16^{\circ}C$condition till 30th day after seeding. Japonica variety Jinheung and Chulwon No.1 survived almost 100% without any significant , discoloration and death of leaves due to chilling even under the chilling of 8 days at all seedling ages tested. Tongil and Yushin, varieties from Indica x Japonica cross, showed increasing discoloration of leaves and death of plants with increase in chilling intensity. The longest chilling duration shown seedling death less than 5% was 4, 6, 1, 4, 8 days for Tongil, and 6, 6, 1, 2, 2, days for Yushin at 1, 2, 3, 5th leaf-stage, respectively. The degree of discoloration and death of leaves or suppression of height growth was not explicitly related to seedling death or the dry weight reduction. The degree of seedling death or dry weight reduction could differentiate chilling tolerance of varieties and seedling ages, but somewhat differently. Reduction in dry weight due to chilling occurred even without any visible injury or seedling death. These suggest that both the degree of seedling death and reduction in dry weight should be considered in the test of varieties for chilling tolerance. Combined evaluation of seedling death and dry weight reduction indicated the most susceptible seedling age to chilling injury to be 1 to 2nd leaf-stage for Jinheung, 2 to 3rd leaf-stage for Chulwon No.1, 3rd leaf- stage for Tongil and Yushin, respectively.

  • Correlations of soil and leaf nutrients and growth of young 'Enterprise' apple (Malus ${\times}$ domestica Borkh.) trees were analyzed with tree damage, such as Japanese beetle (JB; Popillia japonica Newman)-damaged leaves, vole damage to trunk, tree mortality, and weed density in a certified organic orchard in warm and humid environment of Southern USA. Interaction treatments of four mulch and three fertilizers were applied around trees as follows: mow-and-blow (MB), shredded paper (SP), wood chips (WC), and green compost (GC) as a mulch, with no fertilizer (NF), poultry litter (PL), and commercial organic fertilizer (CF) as a fertilizer applied in April. Vole damage to trunk and weed density were little correlated with mineral nutrients and tree growth. JB-damaged leaves were highly stimulated to 26.5% in GC-treated plots while tree mortality were increased by MB treatments. Biomass production per tree was approximately 3,700 g on the WC- and GC-treated plots, which was two times higher than those values observed on the other two mulch plots. JB-damaged leaves tended to get worse when nutrients in soil and leaf increased through the correlation analysis, with a strong positive relationship ($r^2=0.585$) observed between JB-damaged leaves and trunk cross sectional area, a vegetative indicator. Tree mortality was more negatively associated with nutrient contents and growth of trees than those of soil nutrients. Wood chips was considered for a local organic mulch materials to increase organic matter contents and to produce healthy young trees in Southern USA, with control insect, such as beetle, and vole density in an orchard habitat.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum management system during a overwintering for the production of Pinus densiflora container 2-0 seedlings. The experiment performed between 2005~2006 in a polyethylene film house (PE house) located at Yeoju-Gun in Kyungki-Do. During the winter in the PE house, the difference in maximum day temperature and minimum day temperature was large, and the difference in temperature was detected between the container keeping locations. During the winter season, the maximum day temperatures at the seedling bench in January and February were $32.8^{\circ}C$ and$36.6^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas those at the ground in January and February were $16.0^{\circ}C$ and $24.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Water contents of container seedlings was reduced gradually from the beginning the experiment, and reduced rapidly from February to March, and increased rapidly from April. Container seedlings showed different death rate according to the extending of the irrigation cycle. Death rate by one week and two weeks of irrigation cycle was 4.8% and 6.5%, and 38.5% and 49.4% of death rate occurred by three and four weeks of irrigation cycle, respectively. It is suggested that the proper irrigation cycle for P. densiflora 2-0 container seedlings during overwintering is two weeks. When containers placed directly on the ground, the root of container seedlings went out through the drainage of the container, and grew out in the soil. These roots were cut while moving the container to the bench in spring.

  • About 10% of trees damaged by the development projects are to be transplanted when conducting the Environmental Impact Assessment. However, various problems have been raised during transplantation. In this study, we confirm the stakeholder's perceptions of the problems that occur during transplantation. The survey was conducted from October 9 to 25, 2020. Among the stakeholder groups, 36 respondents participated in the consulting institute group, 44 from the review institute group, and 83 from the developer·agency group (total of 163). All three groups responded that it was necessary to transplant some of the damaged trees even if the development charge increased because the damage caused by the development project was serious. The most serious problem was 'high mortality'. The response rate was high that all three groups should plant the same species with the same quantity as an alternative method in case of withering. In order to reduce the mortality rate, small-sized trees were transplanted and transplanted trees were expanded to include planted species and landscape trees. In addition, the number of transplanted trees was high in response to calculating the transplantratio to the number of native tree damaged. The percentage of respondents who said that it was necessary to allocate a separate manager was also high. The results will be used as basic data to improve problems that occur during transplantation of damaged trees.

  • Pine wilt disease is caused by the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) and has killed many pine trees in Europe and Northeast Asia, including South Korea. Resistance to pine wilt disease varies among species. Previous studies were mostly conducted in nature or greenhouses and only a few in test fields. In this study, seedlings of six pine species (Pinus thunbergii, P. koraiensis, P. densiflora, P. parviflora, P. rigida × P. taeda, and P. strobus) were artificially inoculated by pine wood nematodes in the test field. The Wilt Index was measured every 2 weeks after inoculation in addition to the mortality rate, detection rate, and pine wood nematode concentration measurement after 24 weeks. The pine wilt disease mortality rates were P. thunbergii (80%), P. koraiensis (77.8%), P. densiflora (62.5%), and P. parviflora (22.0%), and both P. rigida × P. taeda and P. strobus survived. The pine nematode detection rates were the same among the species except for P. rigida × P. taeda pine (22.2%). High Wilt-Index values were obtained for P. thunbergii, P. koraiensis, and P. densiflora, which had mortality rates higher than the other species. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the Wilt Indexes between P. parviflora, P. rigida × P. taeda, P. strobus, and the control group. Statistically, P. thunbergii and P. koraiensis showed high susceptibility to pine wilt disease, P. densiflora and P. parviflora showed moderate susceptibility, and P. rigida × P. taeda and P. strobus showed apparent resistance. These results provide basic data for pine wood nematode resistance breeding or as evidence of the need for afforestation of P. rigida × P. taeda and P. strobus.
