  • This study aimed to develop a Korean word tool related to solitude and loneliness. Because collecting the right words is very important, words that express the two emotions were selected from three language dictionaries. At this time, related words were collected to specifically reflect the increasing number of people seeking voluntary solitude. Consequently, 1,768 words were collected. From these, 684 words were selected based on specific criteria that everyone can understand and use, and they went through a six-iteration selection process, which extracted a total of 243 words. Considering the nature of the study, the meanings of the words collected must be clear and comprehensively represent the overall aspects of solitude and loneliness. Accordingly, a total of 243 words were selected, focusing on words that received the highest ratings in terms of familiarity and appropriateness. It is expected that this study will establish a clear concept of solitude and loneliness and provide basic data that can be used to understand the realistic and universal perception of Koreans from a developmental perspective.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the perceptions of loneliness, death anxiety, and social capital among older adults living in urban and rural communities and to examine the moderating effects of social capital on the relationship between loneliness and death anxiety. Utilizing the survey data collected by the Aging Society and Social Capital Research Center in 2018, we analyzed 839 older adults living in urban areas and 322 rural older adults living in rural areas. We used descriptive statistics, results from t-tests, and χ2 tests to compare the rates of loneliness, social capital, and death anxiety perceived by older adults across urban and rural areas. The moderating effects of social capital on the relationship between loneliness and death anxiety were tested by logistic regression analyses for each group of urban and rural older adults. Compared to older adults living in rural areas, a greater number of older adults in urban areas reported death anxiety and higher levels of loneliness. However, the perceived levels of social capital were higher among rural older adults. The moderating effects of social capital on the relationship between loneliness and death anxiety were not found among older adults living in urban area, but, for older adults living in rural areas, social capital including social cohesion and social support moderated the relationship between loneliness and death anxiety. The results of this study suggest that regional differences shown in the perceptions of loneliness, death anxiety, and social capital should be addressed, when considering extensions of social capital and related interventions to deal with loneliness and death anxiety among older adults.

  • This study aimed to examine a multiple mediator model in which stresses affect self-criticism. The self-criticism, in turn seemed to affect the feelings of loneliness, and this had an effect on over 65 years living alone. Furthermore, whether social support had any moderating effects in the pathway from the loneliness to suicidal ideation on our pass model were also investigated. Data were collected from 572 samples of persons 65 years of age and older living alone in Seoul. For the analyses of the mediating effects and moderating effects, structural equation modeling was used. The results were as follows. First, the pass model was identified to fit the observed data. This mean that self-criticism increased as stress rises, the increased levels of self-criticism increased loneliness, and the increased levels of loneliness increased the levels of suicidal ideation. Second, social support moderated the relation between loneliness and suicidal ideation on our model. These results suggested that interventions which deal with loneliness and suicidal ideation were needed, in order to reduce suicidal ideation caused by the stress. These imply, additionally, that when social workers try to reduce the suicidal ideation, they should consider the levels of social support at work as influences.

The result showed that the participants of the educational programs had a lower level of loneliness and a higher level of life satisfaction. The educational program for the elderly was effective for the psychological well-being of the aged. Multiple regression results showed that subjective health played the most important role in explaining the loneliness, followed by education level, elderly education participation, financial states. The results also showed that subjective health played the most important role in explaining the life satisfaction, followed by elderly education participation, religious activity participation, financial status. • This study aims to examine how the elderly's internet use affects changes in life, loneliness, self-esteem factors, and life quality. According to the research result, it was found that the elderly's loneliness has a series of relationships with internet use. In other words, the basic model of the initial research suggests as in previous research a hypothesis that internet use relieves the elderly's loneliness; however, according to the final analysis result, the elderly's loneliness is rather a motive that makes them use internet. Also, it was analyzed that as the old's self-esteem gets higher, they show higher satisfaction with their life quality, and internet use affects the improvement of their self-esteem greatly. According to the result of estimating the final model, it was found that the factors of life changes resulted from internet use and influence on the improvement of their self-esteem were far stronger than other variables. Therefore, to improve the old's life quality, it is needed to increase the old's self-esteem, and for improving self-esteem, it will bring a great effect to use the media of internet.

  • In recent years, the number of single-person households is increasing with the aging of the population and the number of the elderly living alone is increasing rapidly with the aging of the population. Therefore, the lonely death of the elderly living alone has become a social issue. In many cases, the body is discovered several days after death. In particular, lonely death of the elderly living alone is being taken more seriously in society, as there is no one to arrange funerals, organize and dispose of their belongings. Since the body is usually found after a few days, the decomposition of the body is often severe. Therefore, this paper proposes an indoor monitoring system using a temperature and humidity sensor and a human body sensor to prevent and respond to lonely deaths in the elderly living alone.
