The morphomeristic features of Gadus macrocephalus was compared using fish samples from Jinhae Bay in the South Sea and Boryeong in the Yellow Sea, Korea. In total, 332 individuals were sampled from 2 locations to investigate the differences in the morphomeristic features and determine applicability of it as a means of stcok discrimination of G. macrocephalus. No significant differences in the number of vertebrae, 1st to 3rd dorsal-fin soft rays, 1st and 2nd anal-fin soft rays, pectoral-fin soft ray, pelvic-fin soft ray, and gill raker were found between two populations from Jinhae Bay and Boryeong. The results of present study revealed that morphomeristic features of G. macrocephalus was not applicable for stock discrimination.
The morphological characteristics of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta, masou salmon. Oncorhynchus masou and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss in Korea were studied from 1989 to 1990. It was found that 13 factors of the female and 11 factors of the male in body form, number of pyloric ceaca and gill rakers has significant specific differences. There were some differences among species in the ratios of body depth, caudal peduncle depth, dorsal fin length and anal fin length to standard length (PBL), and snout length, eye diameter, upper jaw length, and cheek to head length. In the ratio of head length to fork length of the male, chum salmon showed the highest(24.7%) value and rainbow trout the lowest(21.6%). No difference was found in the female. It was proved that number of vertebrae, gill rakers, pyloric ceaca and lateral line scales were useful taxonomical characteristics of the salmon species. In particular, the ratio of eye diameter (ED) to head length (HL) appeared to be a new taxonomic criterion for the salmons in Korean waters.
The data of Duroc swine species that were born from 2000 to 2014 excluding missing ones collected by Korea National Institute of Animal Science were used in the present study. After removing missing data we used 9756 of productions data and 1728 of reproductive reference of breeding research to study the level of inbreeding and to investigate the impact on the reproductive traits, production traits. The correlation of reproductive traits and inbreeding coefficient are -0.07, -0.08 for total number pigs born, number of pigs born alive respectively and birth weight per litter is -0.10, number of pigs born alive per litter to 21days is -0.06 and body weight per litter to 21days is -0.09. The correlation coefficients of the inbreeding coefficients of reproductive traits are shown within 10% with negative correlation (P < 0.05). Days of 90kg and Backfat in the correlation coefficient and inbreeding coefficient production traits were not observed significant correlations, Average daily gain was investigated by the positive correlation of 0.05. According to the above results, the inbreeding level gave a negative effect on the improvement of the breed traits, investigating a relatively high compared to a negative effect on other traits. But overall correlation degree is less than 10% was observed. This inbreeding coefficient has not been clearly observed due to degeneration of the average inbreeding coefficients of these generations was maintained within 10% of the population. The scale of the experimental group was about 150 degree pig husbandry is very small compared to the advanced countries. However, the level of inbreeding in the population group with the appropriate mating combinations is maintained below 10% of population is thought to be small and can minimize the effects of inbreeding degeneration. further testing utilizing this selection is constantly considered to be necessary.
This study was carried out to investigate the time-trends of genetic parameters of the dosed flock population which selected for improving egg production. Data for two layer pure lines, Line-W (Single Comb White Leghorn) and Line-B (brown layer) which have been maintained at the Mani Breeding Farm were collected from 1980 to 1985 during 5 generations. The effective number of parents per generation ranged from 148 to 366 in Line-W and 85 to 355 in Line-B, and the cumulative expected inbreeding coefficients during 5 generations of selection were 15% and 1.6%. So inbreeding could not be considered a critical factor on estimating the genetic parameters, heritabilities and genetic correlations Heritabilities of EN 300 and EN 400, primary two selected traits were significantly decreased during 5 generations but the estimates of the other 03its not showed the consistent decreasing pattern significantly. No time trends of probable consequence were evident in the genetic correlation coefficients of the traits studied. The reason for that situation was attributed to the fact that selection was conducted for multiple objectives and the relative importance of selection for the studied traits were not consistent by generations.
In order to study the taxonomic status of Cottus species from Korea, 19 morphological characters, egg number and size and hatched juvenile form in C. poecilopus and C. hangionsis were compared. The two species of C. poecilopus and C. hangionsis overlap each other in morphometric characters mostly, but snout length, caudal peduncle length and pectoral fin ray number were distinguished between them. Moreover the C. poecilopus and C. hangionsis specimens were differ from each other in the number of egg and size. The newly hatched juvenile form of C. hangiongensis produced many small eggs from which pelagic larvae were formed. In contrast, C. poecilopus produced well - developed juveniles. Two species have distinctly different life - cycles ; amphidromous for C. hangionsis and fluvial land - locked for C. poecilopus.
Estimate of heritabilities, genotypic and phenotypic correlations and path coefficient analysis were performed for the seven characters of barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.). Heritabilities of broad sense for stem length and spike length were 0.923 and 0.907. Kernels per spike, grain yield and 100 grain weight also showed high heritabilities. High genotypic and phenotypic correlations existed between stem length and 100 grain weight. Grain yield showed highly significant phenotypic correlation with spike length, 100 grain weight and kernels per spike. Genotypic correlations between those characters were moderately high. Number of stem had greatest direct effect but the number of spike had a strong negative direct effect upon grain yield. Kernels per spike via number of spike showed greatest indirect effect and the number of stem via number of spike showed strong negative indirect effect upon grain yield.
This experiment was carried out to analyze genetic parameters for the selection of silkworm by diallel-crossing with three Japanese and four Chiness silkworm races. Heritability, genetic correlation and path coefficient were calculated as the statistical parameters to evaluate direct or indirect effects of various gentic characters on bave weight. The heritabilities of fifth instar period, cocoon weight, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ration, fibroin contents, boiling off ratio and bave weight were over 76.65% in both F1 and F2 generations. There were positive coefficients in both phenotypic and genotypic correlations between male and female of both F1 and F2 generations. The latter showed greater values in general. The correlation between bave weight and the characters of cocoon weight, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ratio, fibroin contents were over 0.727 in both sexes of F1 and F2. Therefore, these results suggest that above characters would be useful for genetic selection of silkworms. As result of path coefficient analysis, there was a direct effect with path coefficient value of 0.991 between bave weight and F1 female cocoon layer weight, and with the value of 0.803 between bave weight and F1 male cocoon weight. In F2 the effect showed 0.938 between bave weight and male cocoon weight and cocoon layer weight had greater influence on direct or indirect effects (in path coefficient) than the others.
Morphological variation of the crusian carp, Carassius auratus, from Yongnam area in Korea was examined. In morphometric and meristic characters, mean values were different slightly among the polulations, whereas the range of variation was overlapped largely. In the present examination the number of spines in dorsal fin were 4-6. The majority of individuals appeared to be similar to Carassius auratus langsdorfii from Japan, but some individuals were quite different from them in having 66-83 gill rakers.
This study was carried out to reveal the taxonomic status of the two mullets, Chelon affinis and Chelon haematocheilus from Korea by comparison of their morphological characteristics. Chelan affinis, occurred in the southern coastal area, is a distinct species characterized by having a keel on the middorsal line in front of the spinous dorsal fin. However, Chelon haematocheilus, found in the all coastal areas of Korea excluding Cheju island is easily distinguished from the former in having the deep flat head. By comparison of five groups of Chelan haematocheilus, Kunsan group is slightly differed from others in the height of anal fin and caudal peduncle length. Although Chelon affinis is similar with Chelan haematocheilus in the view of meristic characters, they are distinguished from each other in the number of pyloric caeca and lateral line scales.
