  • Epoxy resin compositions were studied on the view of self-extinguishing properties without retardant additives and suitability as materials of eco-friendly EMC (Epoxy molding compound). Cured epoxy and phenolic resin composition having conjugated double bond of aromatic structure exhibited self-extinguishing properties and low heat release capacity. In this study, the structure of long conjugated double bond of hetero-atom type azomethyne group between conjugated double bonds of aromatic structure showed lower heat release capacity. Low heat release capacity seemed to be related with high reaction enthalpy, $T_g$ and reactivity affected by hetero-atom structure in azomethyne group.

  • Silicate used as laundry detergent builder was good for pH buffering capacity and solubility but calcium-ion binding capacity and surfactant adsorption ability were lower. As $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio became higher, pH buffering capacity and ion exchange ability were lower and surfactant adsorption ability was little higher. Anionic surfactant LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulphonate), nonionic surfactant LA-9 (lauryl alcohol EO-9) were used to investigate the detergency performance. Zeolite was better than sodium silicate in detergency performance. In case of LAS, detergency performance was good when $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio was lower. In case of LA-9, detergency performance was similar without discrimination of molar ratio of $SiO_2/Na_2O$.

  • In this study, Jute fibers reinforced polypropylene (JFRP) composites were manufactured by injection molding technique. In order to improve the affinity and adhesion between fibers and thermoplastic matrices during manufacturing, Maleic anhydride (MA) as a coupling agent have been employed. Untreated and treated surfaces of jute fibers were characterized using SEM and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Physical properties like water absorption rate were studied. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out to evaluate the composite mechanical properties. Tensile test and bending test indicated that JFRP composites show higher strength and modulus than pure PP. In addition, strength and modulus were found to be influenced by the variation of MAPP content (1%, 2%, and 3%). Tensile fracture surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscope. It ensures better interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix by increasing the percentage of MAPP.

  • The orientational binding of ${\omega}$-phenylakylammonium ions to the sodium dodecyl (SDS) micellar interface has been studied from $^{1}H\;NMR$ chemical shift data. The NMR resonaces of the methylene protons of SDS and aromatic protons embedded into the micellar interior have shown the upfield shift. The aromatic induced chemical shifts of the alkyl chain methylene protons of SDS demonstrate the deep penetration into the palisade layer by these organic salts. Alkylammonium groups have been considered to be oriented toward outside of the micellar interface. Aromatic rings have been thought to be oriented toward the micellar core. The depth of penetration by organic salts has been observed to increase with the length of alkyl chain.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counterion binding constant (B) in a mixed micellar state of the Dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) with the Cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide (CDEAB) at 25$^{\circ}C$ in aqueous solutions of n-butanol were determined as a function of ${\alpha}_1$ (the overall mole fraction of DPC) by the use of electric conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters (($X_i,\;{\gamma}_i,\;C_i,\;a^M_i,\;{\beta},\;and {\Delta}H_{mix})$were calculated by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The effect of n-butanol on the mixed micellization of the DPC/CDEAB mixtures has been also studied by analyzing the measured and calculated thermodynamic parameters (CMC, B 및 $;{\Delta}G_o\;^m$).

  • Plasma treatment and corona treatment have been used for surface modification of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film by activating its surface with the -OH group. Adhesion promoter or coupling agent was also used to improve adhesion of PDMS film with various materials. However, obtained hydrophilicity onto the surface of PDMS films with those processes was transient and vulnerable. In this study, a new alkoxysilane-functionalized acrylic polymer precursor was first synthesized by copolymerization process, and then was reacted with HO-terminated PDMS through condensation reaction to prepare a new surface modifier for PDMS film. The structure and molecular weight of the prepared surface modifier were confirmed by 1H-NMR and GPC measurement. Surface properties of surface modifier-coated PDMS films were also investigated by using XPS, ATR and WCA analysis. The adhesion between the PDMS film and the surface modifier was tested using cross-cut test.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the micro ensile bond strength to bovine dentin of several adhesives (SM, Scotch $Bond^{TM}$ Multipurpose; SB, $Adper^{TM}$ Single Bond 2; SE, $Clearfil^{(R)}$ SE Bond; AQ, AQ $Bond^{TM}$; TS, $Clearfil^{(R)}$ tri-S Bond). Except SM and SB, they have a simplified one- or two-step application protocols in compare with the dentin adhesives conventional three-step protocols. For the microtensile bond strength test, the labial surfaces of bovine incisors were used. Following exposure of dentin layer, according to their manufacturer's directions, each dentin adhesives were applied and composite resin blocks were constructed. The teeth were sectioned for specimen and tested microtensile bond strength. Also observed the fracture mode of interface. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The microtensile bond strength values ranged from 51.34 to 24.04 MPa on dentin(in decreasing order, SE, SM, SB, AQ and TS). 2. The highest microtensile bond strength was by SE and SM on bovine dentin, and the lowest by AQ and TS. 3. SM, SB and SE showed cohesive failures and adhesive failure but AQ, TS presented almost adhesive failures. In summary, microtensile bond strengths of single-step adhesives (AQ and TS) on bovine dentin were significantly lower than those of multi-step adhesives (SM, SB and SE) (p<0.05).

  • The effects of coupling agent on the interface characteristics between epoxy resin and natural zeolite were studied by SEM, optical microscope and universal testing machine (UTM). Epoxy resin as a matrix was diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA)/malononitrile (MN) system and natural zeolite as an inorganic fillet was produced in Korea. With the increment of zeolite content, tensile strength decreased and it was due to the different elastic moduli of two materials. When external stress was loaded on the composites, the stress concentrated on the weakly bonded interface and crack grew easily. To improve the interface characteristics, the surface of the natural zeolite was treated with the silane coupling agent and it was found that the tensile strength was increased. The morphology of the interface showed that the bonding characteristics were modified by coupling agent.
