  • This research was conducted to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of stream water at the four points in the northeastern part of Puk'ansan National Park from July, 1998 to November, 1999. The average pH of stream water was 6.65 and dissolved oxygen was $10.7mg/{\ell}$, which indicated that the quality could be categorized in the first class for the quality of river water quality standard. In addition, the water was soft water and average percentage of dissolved oxygen was 96.7%, which was almost saturated. The number of visitors resulted in the increase of dissolved ion, witch affected on electrical conductivity of the water. The relationships between those factors was significant at the 1% level in linear regression. The electrical conductivity and the amount of anion($Cl^-$, $NO{_3}^-$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$)in downstream were higher than those in upstream.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the change characteristics of stream water quality by land-use of forest from July to September, 2000 in three stands(Pinus densiflora, Castanea crenata (I), Castanea crenata (II) stand) of Jeongpyeong-ri, Jinju-si, Gyeongnam. The mean pH of rainfall results in acid rain of 5.3. The pH of stream water in three stands was high in order of Pinus densiflora (pH 6.59), Castanea crenata (II)(pH 6.53) and Castanea crenata (I) stand(pH 6.47). The electrical conductivity of stream water was high in order of Castanea crenata (I), Pinus densiflora and Castanea crenata (II) stand. Cations contents of three stands in stream water were high in order of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and ${NH_4}^+$. But anions of stream water in Pinus densiflora stand and Castanea crenata (II) stand were high in order of ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$ and ${NO_3}^-$. In Castanea crenata (I) stand cations of stream water were high in order of ${NO_3}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$. The level of pH, ${NH_4}^+$, ${NO_3}^-$, $Cl^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ of stream water in Pinus densiflora stand and Castanea crenata (II) stand reached within the level of domestic use standard for drinking water But the level of ${NO_3}^-$ of stream water in Castanea crenata (I) stand was higher than that of domestic use standard. Therefore, non-point sources like forest watersheds which are fertilizer application lands should be taken to the appropriate mitigation measures.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of a torrent control structure using customized tetrapods on the forest water quality conservation and management. The study was conducted in the Honggye valley located in Sanchung-gun, Gyungsangnam-do, and stream water quality was compared before and after construction of torrent control structure. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, pH of stream water didn't get out of the range of River water quality standard class I. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, Dissolved Oxygen concentration didn't change, and Electrical Conductivity measurements agreed well within the range of normal clean stream water quality. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, average of total amount of anion was 3.07/2.30~3.60 mg/L, being slightly greater than before construction. Stream water quality after construction of the torrent control structure was similar to before construction. Therefore, it was find out that the torrent control structure didn't affect stream water quality.

  • The effects of clearcutting on soil chemical ingredients and stream water quality have been investigated at a natural deciduous forest catchment within the Seoul National University Research Forest in Mt. Paekun, Chunnam province during the periods of 1993 to 1998. Soil chemical ingredients and stream water qualities were monitored at a 13 ha clearcutting site and a non-treatment site nearby. During the first and second years after harvesting, the levels of total-N, and exchangeable ions (K/sup +/, Na/sup +/, Ca/sup 2+/, Mg/sup 2+/) decreased compared to the values of before harvesting. During the fifth years after harvesting, these levels were significantly higher than those during the first and second years after harvesting. But the chemical characteristics of soil were not changed at all. pH of water in the harvesting area was 6.5 in stream water. Among the nutrients, Cd, Pb, Cu, and phosphate were not found, and the level of BOD reached at the level of the domestic use suitable for drinking. Turbidity, odor, taste, NH/sub 4//sup +/ -N, NO/sub 3//sup -/-N, standard plate count, and coliform were also low enough to be used as the domestic use for drinking by the near villagers. During the first and second years after harvesting, BOD increased to about 1 ppm. For that reason, the harvesting planning should be built in the harvesting area in consideration of the control of water quality in the stream.

  • This research was investigated to check characteristics of stream water quality at four points to analyze the characteristics of stream water in the northeastern part of Puk'ansan National Park during a period of July to November, 1998. The results are as follows. The level of average pH(6.56) and dissolved oxygen($10.22mg/{\ell}$) in the stream water quality on northeastern area in Puk'ansan National Park were at the level of the first class in the quality of river water quality standard. Also, the water in these streams was soft and equilibrated the ration and anion. Electrical conductivity in the stream water was correlated with total amount of ion and number of visitors, but conversely correlated with pH. And the number of visitors influenced stream water quality pollution. The multiple regression equations for electrical conductivity were well explained by pH, Zn and $Mg^{2+}$ statistically.

  • Water pollution in erosion control dams is a major issue for forest watershed management, but the effects of erosion control dams on water quality remain poorly understood. In this study, water quality data from streams and dam reservoirs were collected over the Nakdong river basin. Monitored data were further analyzed to examine the relationship between watershed characteristics and water quality. Of the total 43 erosion control dams, less than 10% had lower water quality that was not suitable for agricultural use. TOC and oxygen demand, SS and turbidity, SS and Chl-a, and Chl-a and turbidity showed high correlations (p < 0.01) both in stream water and in detained water. BOD and SS, BOD and Chl-a, BOD and turbidity, and TOC and Chl-a showed high correlations only in stream water. Overall, the results demonstrated that for most erosion control dams the water quality was relatively good. In addition, the quality of downstream water is somewhat affected by the water detained by erosion control dams, in limited ways.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the change characteristics of stream water quality by type of forest from June to August, 2009 in three stands (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) of Samgye-ri Naedong-myeon Jinju-si Gyeongsangnam-do. The pH of stream water in three stands was highest in Pinus densiflora (pH 7.18) followed by Castanea crenata (pH 6.90) and Plantation land (pH 6.90) while the electrical conductivity of stream water was highest in Plantation land followed by Castanea crenata stand and Pinus densiflora stand was the lowest. Cations contents of stream water in three stands were high in order of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^{+}$, and $NH_{4}{^{+}}$. But anions of stream water in Castanea crenata stand and Pinus densiflora stand were high in order of $SO_{4}{^{2-}}$, $Cl^{-}$ and $NO_{3}{^{-}}$ while those of stream water in Plantation land were high in order of $SO_{4}{^{2-}}$, $NO_{3}{^{-}}$ and $C\lambda^{-}$. The stream water in three stands was significant at pH, EC, $NO{^{3-}}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^{+}$, $Cl^{-}$, TNU and Color by duncan test. These results indicate that quality of stream water have a difference among three stands. The level of pH, $NH_{4}{^{+}}$, $Cl^{-}$, $SO_{4}{^{2-}}$ and $NO_{3}{^{-}}$ of stream water in three stands were within the domestic use standard for drinking water. but turbidity and color of stream water were more than that of domestic use standard for drinking water. Therefore, non-point sources like urban forest watersheds which are soil erosion and fertilizer application lands should be taken to the appropriate mitigation measures if they are to be used as source of drinking water.
