Development of an Organic Dairy Complex by Contract Farming with an Enterprise: A Case Study of Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do (계약생산에 의한 기업 주도형 유기낙농단지의 형성: 전라북도 고창군을 사례로)

  • The objective of this study was to review how contract farming started in Gochang-gun and identified its characteristics among the contracting parties and the consequent changes in the region's dairy industry with regard to the contract production of organic milk in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea in conjunction with the Maeil Dairy Industry Corporation. The contract was established in keeping with the product diversification strategy of the company after a crisis due to opening of the market, taking advantage of the clean environment of Gochang-gun and positive attitudes of the local government and dairy farmers. The expansion of the participating farms led to a production gap among dairy farms in the region; however, the overall concern over the conventional practice of contract farming was mitigated as the organic farming spread with the conversion of the contract farms to organic farms.

Comparison of Efficiencies of Container Ports in the East Asia, Europe, and North America (동아시아 유럽 북미 컨테이너항만의 상대적 효율성 비교 분석)

  • Countries around the world are propelling policies and strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of their own ports as they recognize the roles and importance of the ports in the international trade and logistics. The main objective of this study is to compare efficiencies of major container ports and analyze the factors that affect the efficiencies in the three regions of East Asia, Europe, and North America, which cover most of world container shipping. We employ DEA models in analyzing the efficiencies of 45 container ports using 5 input and 2 output variables. We also carry out regression analyses to estimate the impacts of each factor on the throughput (TEU), overall technical efficiency (OTE), pure technical efficiency (PTE), and scale efficiency (SE). The analysis results show that East Asian ports, despite being smaller in average size, make greater output and achieve higher technical and scale efficiencies than European or North American ports.

  • This study examines the competitiveness of urban industrial structure and its changing characteristics. Cluster analysis of Arizona towns based on economic functions revealed the changing characteristics of urban functions over time. The relationship between the changes of urban functions and industrial competitiveness was confirmed through shift-share analysis. The level of industrial specialization has become more closely related to urban size in terms of both population and employment, but the relationship between metropolitan location and specialization level is not clear. Also, it is validated that the economies of Arizona towns have become more diversified and, consequently, have tended to converge toward the state average in industrial structure over time.

Analysis of the Influence of Shipping Policies on the Expansion of Korea's Merchant Fleet Using System Dynamics (시스템 다이내믹스를 이용한 해운정책이 우리나라 외항선대 증가에 미친 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This study measures how Korean shipping policies influence the expansion of the country's merchant fleet using system dynamics. It uses various indexes as factors influencing the gross tonnage of the Korean merchant fleet, such as the Baltic Dry Index, Howe Robinson Container Index, China Containerized Freight Index, and Worldscale Index, as well as the US dollar-Korean won exchange rate, world merchant fleet statistics, and the debt ratio of Korean shipping companies. After establishing the simulation model, the mean absolute percentage error is found to be less than 10%, confirming the accuracy of the model. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to measure the influence of the selected shipping policies, including the gross tonnage of vessels registered under the Korean second registry system, loans of publicly owned financial institutions to shipping companies, ship investment fund, and the number of shipping companies participating in the tonnage tax scheme. The sensitivity analysis reveals that the influence of vessel tonnage and loans to shipping companies is the most significant, while that of the number of companies participating in the tonnage tax scheme is minimal.

Empirical Analysis on Trade Pattern of Korean Motor Industry and Effect of Free Trade Agreement through Panel Gravity Model (패널중력모형을 통한 한국 자동차산업의 교역패턴과 자유무역협정의 영향 분석)

  • This study was done through Panel Gravity Model to analyze the trade pattern of Korean motor industry and empirical analysis was also performed on the effect of regional economies joining to the Korean trade is to draw out some implications. Compared with per capita pattern regarding the income levels of both the countries, the results indicated that trade of Korean motor industry followed GDP pattern in accordance with the overall market. The results of effect on regional economic integration to Korean motor industry reflected 179% and 198% increase in motor trade industry and motor parts trade, respectively. To expand the trade of Korean motor industry at the international competitiveness level, focus should be made on smaller, smarter and greener car with lesser impact on the environment. Hence, the present investigation suggested that government should not delay in retaining the core technology as well as private sector should also aggressively invest in the market.

  • The Investment to road projects has been a hot issue in the aspect of its possible overlapping or overinvestment in Korea. Therefore, additional road construction is not always accepted in these days. This paper investigated several indices including the country index and the road-extension rate index as well as a newly developed index for identifying and comparing road stocks among the OECD countries. Furthermore, the study has estimated some reasonable amount of additional road stocks of Korea when its GDP becomes twenty thousands per capita to forty thousands per capita in future by comparing the amount of stacks of OECD countries at those times. The result can be used for setting the target of road stocks in practical manner in the absence of the universally accepted theory in the road stock provision arena.

A Study on the Outward Foreign Direct Investment and Psychic Distance of Spanish Companies (스페인 기업의 해외투자 진출과 심리적 거리에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to prove the effect of psychic distance between home country and host country on overseas foreign direct investment(OFDI) of Spanish companies through panel analysis. The panel data was based on cultural, institutional, economic, and geographical distance data over the past decade between Spain and Spain's OFDI countries. According to the Random Effect Model(REM) analysis, cultural distance(CULD) had a negative effect on OFDI, while institutional distance(INSD) had a positive effect. Among economic distances, income size distance(GDP) had a positive effect on OFDI, but export size distance(EXPO) had a negative effect. Geographic distance(PKM) had a negative impact. Meanwhile, according to the results of quantile regression analysis to prove the psychic distance effect by OFDI size, the effects of CULD and INSD in the quartile (75%) to which Korea belongs were the same as the REM analysis results. In addition, GDP and EXPO had a positive effect, and PKM had a negative effect but EXPO had a positive effect. Therefore, FDI host countries need to establish differentiated strategies through quantile analysis while making continuous efforts to improve the system.

Economic evaluation for the re-arrangement of accommodation house in ultra large container ship (초대형 컨테이너선의 거주구역 재배치에 대한 경제성 평가)

  • Recently the building of ultra large container ship are discussed among ship building companies and ship operating company who have a tendency to pursue the advantage of large scale of economy. These tendency will be continued for the time being, if ship-building skill and economical efficiency are available. As the enlargement of container ship size becomes hot issues in ship-building markets, the needs for re-arrangement of accommodation house in large container ship are proposed carefully in some researches. This study examined economical efficiency of re-arrangement of accommodation house in ultra large container ship. The separation between accommodation and engine room is proposed through out drawing works in initial design stage and we examined the merits and demerits of the separation in the view of economical efficiency. The RFR(Required Freight Rate) is considered as the objective function to evaluate the re-designed vessel. The economical benefits are analyzed in the view of ship operator and shipyard respectively.

  • As ship builder companies have a tendency to pursuit the effect of scale economy, recently the ultra-large sized container ship is discussed very actively among them. It is expected that these situation will be continued for the time being. The need of accommodation re-arrangement is carefully proposed according to the tendency of ultra-large sized ship. In this paper, accommodation re-arrangement of ultra-large container ship is examined in the view of economy. We proposed separation of engine room and accommodation part through review and supplementaition of drawing generation in intial design stage. Also we investigated its merits and demerits to find out whether it can be realized or not in the view of economical efficiency. The RFR(Required Freight Rate) is considered as the objective function to evaluate the re-designed vessel. The economical benefits for increasing the number of TEU(Twenty-foot Equivalent Units)'s and the re-arranged space are analyzed in the view of ship owner and shipyards respectively.

Development of a graphical user interface and a tool to determine the storage of a rainwater harvesting system using cost-benefit analysis (비용-편익 분석을 이용한 빗물이용시설의 저류 용량 결정 도구 및 사용자 편의 환경 개발)

  • 우리나라에서는 '물의 재이용 촉진 및 지원에 관한 법률 시행규칙' 등 다양한 법률에 따라 특정 규모 이상의 시설에 빗물이용시설을 설치하도록 규정하고 있으며, 지자체에서는 빗물이용시설의 이용을 장려하고자 설치비 및 시설 운영비를 지원하고 있다. 현업에서 빗물이용시설의 설계는 간편식을 이용하여 목표 우수이용률 또는 공급보장률을 만족하는 용량으로 결정하고 있다. 또한, 산정된 빗물이용시설의 용량에 대해서만 경제성 분석을 하고 있으며, 경제성 분석에 포함된 수식에 대한 근거가 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 기 개발된 빗물이용시설 설계 프로그램인 CARAH(capacity design aid for rainwater harvesting)의 추가 기능으로 경제성 분석을 통한 빗물이용시설의 적정 용량 결정 도구 및 사용자 편의 환경 개발 결과를 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해 개발된 CARAH의 경제성 분석 도구는 빗물이용시설의 용량, 설치비, 유지보수비용, 지자체의 설치비 지원 및 빗물 이용에 따른 요금 감면액 등을 고려하여 빗물이용시설의 비용편익 비율(benefit cost ratio; BCR) 산정 결과를 제시하는 기능이다. 본 연구에서는 개발된 CARAH의 경제성 분석 도구를 이용하여 기 설치된 광교 신도시의 빗물저류조 5호를 대상으로 경제성 분석을 수행하였으며, 경제성을 고려한 적정 저류 용량을 제시하였다. 경제성 분석 기간은 빗물이용시설의 내용 연수인 30년으로 하였으며, 여러 목표 공급보장률에 따른 최소 저류 용량별 BCR 결과를 비교하여 광교 신도시의 빗물저류조 5호의 적정 저류 용량을 결정하였다. 그 결과, 공급보장률이 60%에 해당하는 저류 용량 341 m3의 BCR이 7.28로 가장 경제적인 빗물이용시설의 저류 용량으로 산정되었다.
