  • One of the major difficulties in the seismic analysis of a dam-reservoir system is the treatment of the energy radiation in the upstream direction of the reservoir. In the paper, a new transmitting boundary is presented that can model properly the radiation of energy in the far field direction of a semi-infinite reservoir with constant depth. In the newly developed method, effects of surface wave motion are taken into accounted and the reservoir-foundation interaction is approximately accounted for with an absorbing boundary condition. If a dam has vertical upstream face and the infinitely long reservoir maintains constant depth, then the proposed transmitting boundary can be directly coupled with the model of dam body. In present study, the dam body is assumed to behave elastically and modeled by finite element method. Seismic responses of a dam model are investigated using the newly developed transmitting boundary.

  • The scattering property of TMz illuminated perfectly conducting and dielectric cylinders of arbitrary cross section are analyzed by the boundary element techniques. The boundary element equations are formulated via Maxwell’s equations, weighted residual or Green’s theorem, and the boundary conditions. The unknown surface fields on the boundaries are then calculated by the boundary element integral equations. Once the surface fields are found, the scattered fields in from a perfectly conducting circular and elliptic cylinders, a dielectric circular and elliptic cylinders are numerically analyzed. A general computer program has been developed using the quadratic elements(higher order boundary elements) and the Gaussian quadrature.

  • For the time-domain simulation of incipient breaking waves, usually the boundary integral method has been used so far, and it seems to be successful except a problem of too much computation time. The present paper shows a new computation technique for the simulation of breaking wave experiment. This technique uses the high-order spectral/boundary element method and the boundary integral method in sequence, and reduces the computation time remarkably. The wave generation and energy focusing process is efficiently simulated by the high-order spectral/boundary element method. Only the wave over-turning process is simulated by the boundary integral method. In the example calculation result, salient features of breaking waves such as high particle velocities and accelerations are shown.

  • Characteristics of interface friction between cohesionless soils and geotechnical structure surfaces play an important role in the analysis of earth load and resistance on the structure. In general, geotechnical structures are mainly composed of either steel or concrete, and their surface roughnesses with respect to soil particle sizes influence the interface characteristics between soils and the structures. Accurate assessment of the interface friction characteristics between soils and structures is important to ensure the safety of geotechnical structures, such as mechanically stabilized earth walls reinforced with inextensible reinforcements, piles embedded into soils, retaining wall backfilled with soils. In this study, based on the database of high quality interface friction tests between frictional soils and solid surfaces from literature, equation representing peak interface friction angle is proposed. The influential factors of the peak interface friction angle are relative roughness between soil and solid surface, relative density of frictional soil, and residual (constant volume) interface friction angle. Futhermore, for the developed equation of the interface friction angle, its uncertainty was assessed statistically based on Goodness-of-fit test results.

  • The flows around a high speed train are very important because they could affect the aerodynamic characteristics such as drag and acoustic noise. Especially the boundary layer of flows could represent the characteristic of flows around the high speed train. Most previous studies have focused on the boundary layer region along the train length direction for the side of the train and underbody. The measurement and analysis of the boundary layer for the roof side is also very important because it could determine the flow inlet condition for the pantograph. In this study, the roof boundary layer was measured with a 1/20 scaled model of the next generation high speed train, and the results were compared with full-scaled computational fluid dynamics results to confirm their validity. As a result, it was confirmed that the flow inlet condition for the pantograph is about 85% of the train speed. Additionally, the characteristics of the boundary layer, which increases along the train direction, was also analyzed.

  • At the interface of two materials with frequency-dependent material-parameters of permittivity and permeability, there may exist two kinds of surface polaritons: surface electric-polaritons(SEPs) and surface magnetic-polaritons(SMPs). Possible combinations of the material-parameters to support propagation of the two surface polaritons are suggested at the interface between metals and metamaterials such as a left-handed material. Dispersion relations are also derived in order to characterize frequency dependence of propagation of the SEP and SMP. It is found that only one propagation mode of SEP or SMP is allowed at a given set of four material parameters, and that counter-propagation of the phase and group velocities of the propagation mode can be observed even in the case when there are no double negative(or, negative-index) materials. Physical origin of the counter-propagation of the group velocity is proposed by evaluating the ratio of two electromagnetic-energy densities of a surface polariton propagating along within the two interface media, and it is confirmed by the dispersion relations.

  • Sliding mode controller(SMC) is a simple but powerful nonlinear controller, because it guarantees the stability and the robustness. However, it leads to the high frequency chattering of the control input. Although the phenomenon can be avoided by introducing a thin boundary layer to the sliding surface, the method results in a steady state: error proportional to the boundary layer thickness. In this paper, we proposed a new sliding mode controller with self-tuning the thickness of a boundary layer. It uses a fuzzy rule base for tuning the thickness of a boundary layer. That is, the thickness is increased to some degree to reject a discontinuous control input at the initial state and then it is decreased as the states approaches to the steady states for improving the tracking performance. In order to assure the control performance, we perf'ormed the computer simulation using an inverted pendulum system as a controlled plant.

  • In many diagnostic and treatment procedures for prostate disease accurate detection of prostate boundaries in transrectal ultrasound(TRUS) images is required. This is a challenging and difficult task due to weak prostate boundaries, speckle noise and the short range of gray levels. In this paper a method for automatic prostate segmentation inTRUS images using support vectors and snake-like contour is presented. This method involves preprocessing, extracting Gabor feature, training, and prostate segmentation. Gabor filter bank for extracting the texture features has been implemented. A support vector machine(SVM) for training step has been used to get each feature of prostate and nonprostate. The boundary of prostate is extracted by the snake-like contour algorithm. The results showed that this new algorithm extracted the prostate boundary with less than 9.3% relative to boundary provided manually by experts.
